The sun is a great energy source for Earth. But it’s not easy to get its energy because the sun doesn’t work at night, often hides behind clouds an in some places, doesn’t show up for mouths at a time. German scientists built the world’s largest “artificial (人造的) sun” in 2017. They hope it could help us generate renewable fuel (燃料), The Guardian reported.
The artificial sun is called the Synlight. It is 14 meters high and 16 meters wide. It looks like a big honeycomb(蜂巢) made of 149 powerful spotlights (聚光灯). It produces light that is about 10,000 times stronger than natural sunlight on Earth.
When all the spotlights are turned on to focus on one spot, it can generate temperatures of around 3,500℃. “If you went in the room when it was turned on, you’d burn directly,” said Bernard Hoffschmidt, a research director for the project.
In solar power stations (太阳能发电站), people use mirrors to focus sunlight onto water. This produces steam (蒸汽) that can help generate electricity.
Scientists hope that Synlight can focus sunlight and generate lots of energy. They can then use the energy to get hydrogen(氢) from water. The hydrogen can be used as fuel for planes, cars, and trains. Hydrogen fuel is green because it leaves only water when it burns. But producing it takes large amounts of energy.
