In ancient times, copper coins meant wealth. Linking the copper coins one by one had the good meaning of collecting wealth. With coins, people can knit them into different shapes, from armor (盔甲) and swords (剑), to animals and plants. As a traditional skill in China, copper coin knitting (铜钱编织) was listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2018.
Every day at 9 a.m., Zhang Canjin, 58, comes to the Drum Tower Street in Ningbo and walks into a small house of less than 10 square meters. Sitting at his desk, the inheritor (继承人) of copper coin knitting starts his day.
“Knitting the coins into different shapes doesn’t sound difficult, but the key is to be creative and think big,” Zhang said. So, since he started his own copper coin knitting store in 2014, he has tried very hard to think big. Zhang added, “As I keep on making different works, I have more creative ideas in my mind,” Zhang said.
To try something challenging, Zhang spent two months making armor with more than 8,000 coins in 2017. It got great public attention and even got Zhang a national patent for design (设计专利). This also gave him more confidence. Now, he tries to continue getting more creative ideas and hopes the art form will reach more people.

Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in the Yukon, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara Valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was chief dog; he was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.
That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.
“How much are they paying you for this ” he asked.
“I only get fifty dollars.”
“And the man who stole him—how much did he get ” asked the barman.
“A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.”
“That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here, help me to get him into this.”
They took off Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men And where was Mr Miller

Every one of us has a chance to try new things. When we try something new, there’s always the risk. 66
For example, we may try a food we have never had before. And we don’t like the food finally. It can be too sour, too salty or too spicy. We may try a new style of music and get a headache. We may try a new sport like skating and end up falling down a lot. 67 We may try to speak or write a different language and end up embarrassing ourselves.
68 But it is not so bad to take risks. For example, we can try a new food. And we fall in love with it finally. It can be sweet or tastes very good. We may try a new sport and fall down but we get back up and finally experience pleasure, even for a minute. We may see why people love that sport so much.
If we try a new kind of music, we may regret we didn’t find it sooner. We can see a new kind of art. 69 We can try to write and speak a different language, and we may be a little embarrassed at first, but we know that the only way to improve is to make mistakes and keep on trying.
All in all, keep trying something new. 70
A. We are willing to take risks. B. We may be surprised at its beauty. C. Trying new things sounds risky to us. D. You will have chances to get rewards (回报). E. The risk is that we will not be happy with our choice. F. We may see a different kind of art and be completely unhappy.
