Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
4. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study
A. Talking about their lifestyles. B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale. D. Answering questions about screen time use.
5. What do the researchers find about teenage girls
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
6. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
7. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
C 5. D 6. B 7. B

Until 13, Parker Liautaud was an ordinary kid. That changed after he met polar explorer Robert Swan. They began an email correspondence which turned into a friendship that eventually saw the then 14-year-old invited to join a trip to the Antarctic. He said yes almost instantly. Friends and family, to whom he’d so far shown he had no particular interest in outdoor pursuits, particularly polar ones, were thrown into total confusion, to say the least. He ate lots of chicken, spent a long time in the gym, and proved them wrong.
The following year, Liautaud cooked up a more ambitious plan: to become the youngest-ever person to go to the North Pole. He found a new partner, Doug Stoup, and through a mixture of charm and luck raised the roughly $150,000 needed for the record attempt. Then disaster struck. The early months of the year, when the two set out, were among the warmest on record. The North Pole, which is essentially a GPS location on a constantly-drifting collection of ice sheets, became virtually inaccessible, surrounded by pieces of uncovered ocean.
A trip which had intended to raise awareness of melting ice caps had been obstructed by melting ice caps. “We would get up, battle through these difficult conditions for 150 hours, then wake up the next morning and find that we were further away from the Pole than we’d started the previous morning,” he said. After 14 days’ trying, they admitted defeat.
Liautaud came home and decided to try again the next spring. Conditions were cold but perfect, and he and Soup reached the Pole n no time. While it might not have made him the youngest North-Poler, the success did give Liautaud a platform to continue advocacy against climate change, through his campaigning website. His view is that it’s his generation that must push hardest for cuts in carbon emissions. He has already contributed to research projects carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency and will soon set up two stations to record weather data.
8. How did Liautaud’s family react to his decision to go to the Antarctic
A. They made fun of it. B. They were puzzled about it.
C. They turned a deaf ear to it. D. They tried to talk him out of it.
9. Why was Liautaud determined to go to the North Pole
A. To push his physical limits.
B. To become an experienced North-Poler.
C. To support environment protection.
D. To finish a research project for his website.
10. The underlined word “obstructed” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “_________”
A. prevented B. promoted C. separated D. succeeded
11. Which of the following words can best describe Liautaud as a young man
A. Demanding. B. Generous. C. Cooperative. D. Responsible.
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第一段中的“Friends and family, to whom he’d so far shown he had no particular interest in outdoor pursuits, particularly polar ones, were thrown into total confusion, to say the least.(到目前为止,他的朋友和家人对户外活动,尤其是极地活动,并没有特别的兴趣,至少可以说,他们完全陷入了困惑。)”
根据第三段中的“A trip which had intended to raise awareness of melting ice caps(这次旅行旨在提高人们对冰盖融化的认识)”和最后一段中的“While it might not have made him the youngest North-Poler, the success did give Liautaud a platform to continue advocacy against climate change, through his campaigning website.(虽然这可能不会使他成为最年轻的北极人,但这次成功确实给了利奥托一个平台,让他可以通过自己的竞选网站继续倡导应对气候变化。)”
根据第三段的““We would get up, battle through these difficult conditions for 150 hours, then wake up the next morning and find that we were further away from the Pole than we’d started the previous morning,” he said. After 14 days’ trying, they admitted defeat. (他说:“我们会起床,在这些困难的条件下战斗150个小时,然后第二天早上醒来,发现我们比前一天早上离极地更远。”经过14天的努力,他们承认失败了。)”可知,一次旨在提高人们对冰盖融化认识的旅行因冰盖融化而受阻,则划线词翻译为“阻碍”,故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Liautaud came home and decided to try again the next spring. Conditions were cold but perfect, and he and Stoup reached the Pole in no time.(Liautaud回到家,决定来年春天再试一次。环境很冷,但很完美,他和Stoup很快就到达了南极。)”和“His view is that it’s his generation that must push hardest for cuts in carbon emissions. He has already contributed to research projects carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency and will soon set up two stations to record weather data.(他的观点是,他这一代人必须最努力地推动减少碳排放。他已经为国际原子能机构开展的研究项目作出了贡献,并将很快建立两个气象站来记录天气数据。)”可知,“负责任的”最能描述年轻人Liautaud,故选D。
D
The highlights of every World Cup are the impossible goals, especially the arc (弧线) ball goals. It’s breathtaking to watch. Every spin (旋转) of the ball moves air across the surface, pushing it into a bend.
When a soccer ball flies, the air forms a layer around the surface of the ball. As the balls pins, it changes the direction of the air to one side, says John Bush, an applied mathematician at MIT. This air pushes the ball in the opposite direction. The player starts with a strike on the outside of his right foot, which hits the left side of the ball, starting a clockwise spin. It throws the air off to the left, and the force created by the air leaving the ball pushes it to the right, explains Bush. Thus, a ball spinning to the right (that’s clockwise) will also are towards the right. This force is called the Magnus Effect.
It helps the goalkeepers, because they see uniform curvature (曲度) when players are taking bending shots at them. If they can pick up the spin right, it’s going to be the same amount of curvature, and they know where to put their hands. This is partly why players are much more likely to take bending shots during free kicks when goalkeepers can’t see their kicks quite as well because of the wall of defenders. If a ball isn’t spinning, it does something called knuckling, where the air turns the ball to one side in random directions, causing it to bounce in the air unpredictably. “It’s usually achieved when a player manages a sharp, fast touch of the ball, typically right on the air valve where the ball is most firm.” says Bush. Its lack of spin kept the goalkeeper from being able to predict where it was going until it was too late. All the goalkeepers tremble before the kicker that can shoot this kind of soccer ball.
12. What is the Magnus Effect according to the text
A. The force applied to a spinning ball.
B. The theory proposed by John Bush. .
C. The direction opposite to a player’s strike.
D. The goal scored with a bending ball.
13. Why do soccer players prefer to take bending shots during free kicks
A. Because they can change the ball’s curvature.
B. Because they can take bending shots more easily.
C. Because they can get a cover from the wall of defenders.
D. Because they can help their team’s goalkeeper.
14. Which shot might be the most predictable for goalkeepers
A. A free-kick shot.
B. A fast shot without spinning.
C. A shot with a unique curvature.
D. A bending shot without defensive blocking.
15. What’s the best title of the text
A. The Development of Football B. The Principle of a Bending Ball
C. The Secret of Blocking a Goal D. The Theory of Applied Mathematics
A 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据第二段中的“It throws the air off to the left, and the force created by the air leaving the ball pushes it to the right, explains Bush. Thus, a ball spinning to the right (that’s clockwise) will also are towards the right. This force is called the Magnus Effect. (Bush解释说,它将空气抛向左边,而空气离开球所产生的力将球推向右边。因此,向右旋转的球(即顺时针方向)也将向右旋转。这种力叫做马格努斯效应)”可知,马格努斯效应是施加在旋转球上的力,故选A项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“This is partly why players are much more likely to take bending shots during free kicks when goalkeepers can’t see their kicks quite as well because of the wall of defenders. (因为守门员由于防守者的防守墙而无法看到他们的射门,这就是球员在任意球时更有可能进行弯曲射门的部分理由)”可知,因为他们可以从防守队友那里得到掩护,所以喜欢在任意球时进行弯曲射门,故选C项。
14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It helps the goalkeepers, because they see uniform curvature when players are taking bending shots at them. If they can pick up the spin right, it’s going to be the same amount of curvature, and they know where to put their hands. This is partly why players are much more likely to take bending shots during free kicks when goalkeepers can’t see their kicks quite as well because of the wall of defenders.
通读全文,根据第二段中“As the balls pins, it changes the direction of the air to one side, says John Bush, an applied mathematician at MIT. This air pushes the ball in the opposite direction. The player starts with a strike on the outside of his right foot, which hits the left side of the ball, starting a clockwise spin. (麻省理工学院的应用数学家John Bush说,当球固定时,它会将空气的方向改变到一边。这种空气将球推向相反的方向。球员首先用右脚外侧击球,击中球的左侧,开始顺时针旋转)”等内容可推知,本文的目的是分析弧线球的原理,因此B项“弧线球的原理” 可以作为标题,故选B项。
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

A Simple Thank You
I have been in the teaching profession for more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr Rowe. I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.
Mr Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.
Mr Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So, while Mr Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr Rowe commented, "you are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands, when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.
That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr Rowe more and more with each passing day.
Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Many years later, Mr Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps(海军)uniform.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school. Our school had a very special tradition on the last day. All the teachers filled the sidewalk, waving goodbye to the kids as the buses pulled out with their horns honking. But on that particular day, Steven walked slowly to the bus, his head down, tears in his eyes. He boarded the bus reluctantly, hesitated, and then ran back off the bus to hug Mr Rowe. "I don't want to leave you." He sobbed. With red-rimmed eyes, Mr Rowe comforted him, "I will miss you, too."
Paragraph 2:
Many years later, Mr Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps uniform. The young man stood tall and proud. It was Steven! Mr Rowe and I couldn't believe our eyes. He saluted and hugged Mr Rowe tightly! "I have come back to school today just to say thanks to you!" It is my hope that every teacher is blessed with such an experience of a former student coming back to simply say thanks.

D Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
7. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
