Located about 10 km northeast of the city center, the Chengdu Panda Base is a popular place to see lots of pandas of different ages in what’s close to their natural habitat.
Highlights and Travel Tips
The Chengdu Panda Base is a nonprofit research and breeding (繁殖) facility for giant pandas that was originally founded in 1987 and opened to the public in 1993. The center began with a population of just six giant pandas and has since grown to more than 100 pandas.
For visitors, it is more like a nice park than a traditional zoo. The base is large and nice to walk around, since much of it is in a bamboo forest. There are also shops selling panda-related souvenirs, but the prices are usually higher than markets or shops outside the base.
Accessibility Information
While the main road is flat, the base is large, so it is better for visitors with mobility issues to ride the shuttle (往返) bus. Visitors who completely rely on wheelchairs may need help from others to guide. Most restrooms within the base are wheelchair accessible.
Opening Hours and Ticket Prices
Opening hours 7:30 am - 6:00 pm
Entrance fee 55 CNY
Shuttle bus fee 10 CNY
Average time for this activity 2-3 hours

Last year, I had the chance to study at a British secondary school as an exchange student.
The British school day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Students usually have to learn nine subjects at secondary school. Every student in the UK must study English, Maths and the Science subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students can also choose to study other subjects, such as History, Art and Business. The classes are different from those in China. Each teacher has their own classroom and the students move around for every lesson.
I enjoyed most of the classes, but some of them were quite challenging. Maths was quite easy and enjoyable because the material was less advanced in the UK than in China. However, learning in English was a great challenge for me. There were a lot of difficult English words, especially in Geography and Biology Class discussion is very important in the UK, but I could not make a great contribution because sometimes I wasn’t able to express myself clearly in English. Although there was not as much homework as I was used to, it was still challenging. Fortunately, my teachers and classmates were always helpful and gave me lots of encouragement. My language skills improved over time.
After school, there were many clubs to join. The one that attracted me most was the Rugby Club. It was great fun. Also, I enjoyed acting in the Theatre Club. I still have photos of myself acting in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For me, joining clubs was a great way to meet British students and make friends with them.
I am glad to have the opportunity to experience this different way of life. I met some great people and learnt a lot about school life in the UK.

B. Science subjects are optional.
C. Teachers have fixed classrooms.
D. Students are free to choose subjects.

B. He was scared of joining in classroom discussion.
C. He didn’t do well at first due to language skills.
D. He had few chances to make friends.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. Experiences abroad. B. School life in the UK.
C. Advice for exchange students. D. Challenges in the UK schools.

Some immigrants (外来移民) in the northeastern part of the US, Maine, are learning to lose their accents. They speak English fluently but have a difficult time being understood because they have heavy accents.
Nyirabahizi said she left her home and job in Rwanda two years ago, coming to America in hopes of a brighter future. She has a master’s degree in computer science and speaks English fluently. She said all of her classes in Rwanda were taught in English, but here she had to learn again because of her accent.
She attended a free class to reduce her accent with seven other students. The city of Portland conducted the class and Greenlaw was the teacher. She said immigrants who had reduced their accents had greater success at work. And they could communicate more easily with store workers, teachers, doctors and neighbors. “It’s a basic need to be understood,” Greenlaw told the newspaper, “It affects every part of their lives.”
Greenlaw began the class by telling students the 44 sounds of the English language. She told the students how the lips and jaws worked to form the sound. She told the students that some American English pronunciation rules didn’t make a lot of sense. But she said it was important to learn them if immigrants wanted to be understood by Americans.
Losing one’s accent is especially important for immigrants who live in Maine. More than 90 percent of the population of Maine are whites. Many people who live in Maine have not heard foreign accents except in movies or on televisions.
Greenlaw said some Mainers were impatient with people who spoke English with heavy accents. Her students said some Mainers ignored them or were unfriendly toward them because of their accents. They said this made them less likely to speak.
28. Why do some immigrants have difficulty making themselves understood
A. Their classes aren’t taught in English.
B. They don’t master English at school.
C. They speak English with heavy accents.
D. They don’t speak English fluently.
29. Why did Nyirabahizi and other students attend the free class
A. To change their low social positions.
B. To hide their identities of immigrants.
C. To forget their native languages.
D. To help them better work and communicate.
30. What is some Mainers’ attitude toward immigrants with heavy accents
A. Grateful. B. Cold. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Immigrants Learn to Change Their Accents
B. Immigrants Are Required to Speak Well
C. Heavy Accents Cause Failures
D. Good English Makes Success

There is a well-known saying that was originally popularized by a 1980s cartoon series called G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero. That saying is “Knowing is half the battle.” At the end of every G.I.Joe episode, there would be a public service announcement, which gave safety tips and other important life lessons to kids. After that, a child would say “Now I know!” And an adult would end with “And knowing is half the battle.”
If knowing is half the battle, then the other half must be doing. “Recent work in cognitive (认知的) science has shown that knowing is a shockingly tiny part of the battle for most real-world decisions,” cognitive psychologists Laurie Santos and Tamar Gendler wrote to Edge.org. In other words, knowing something is likely not enough to overcome our brain’s “built-in” reactions. It just simply isn’t enough to result in behavioral change. Even if knowing isn’t exactly half the battle, it is still important to “know”. If you know about something, then it makes you more aware of it. This, in turn, is the first step to making a change.
If you find yourself struggling to make some sort of change in your life, there are some steps you can take to help you turn your “knowing” into “doing”. First, whether you want to improve your study habits, eat more healthily, or get more sleep, you should write your goals down. When you write down your goals, you document them on paper, which makes them clearer and easier to follow. Next, break down your goals so that they are easier to manage. Making bite-sized steps to achieve your goals will help motivate you to keep moving forward and complete more of these mini goals. Finally, find someone you can share your progress with. Having a friend, family member, or even an online app can help to keep you in check to make sure you get all of the support you need.
It seems that “knowing is half the battle” is no more. So, put your energy into doing. There is no better time than the present, of course!
32. What makes “knowing is half the battle” popular
A. Important life lessons. B. G.I.Joe: A real American hero.
C. A public service announcement. D. Recent work in cognitive science.
33. What do we know from the saying “Knowing is half the battle”
A. Knowing something is worthless.
B. Knowing is just the first step to making a change.
C. Knowing is the battle for most real-world decisions.
D. Knowing contributes to overcoming our brain’s reaction.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Some measures taken to follow your goals.
B. Some measures taken to share your progress.
C. Some measures taken to make knowing a reality.
D. Some measures taken to motivate you to move forward.
35. What can we conclude from this text
A. Put knowing into action. B. Well begun is half done.
C. Words agree with action. D. Action speaks louder than words.

Another disappointing day was passing, and he was driving his beat-up old car home. He was out all day looking for a job. It was getting dark and light snow was coming down, so he almost didn’t see the old lady standing on the side of the road. It was clear that she needed help. He pulled up in front of her obviously brand new and expensive car and got out.
While nobody had stopped to help for the last hour and there was a smile on his face, she was worried when he approached her. He didn’t look safe. He looked poor and hungry.
He could see she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in your car to keep warm My name is Bryan.”
A tire was flat. Bryan fetched tools from his own car to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening her car’s nuts, she rolled down the window, said thanks and asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened without his help.
Bryan never thought twice about the money. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home.
Soon the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in to grab a bite to eat and warm up before she made the last leg of her trip home. The waitress came over with a sweet smile and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant (怀孕的). Although the waitress looked tired and walked painfully due to the pregnancy, she still served the lady.

In order to get more clicks, I really hope you can tell me what kind of Chinese culture you Westerners prefer. What's more, if I want to decorate my website with some Chinese elements, what should I do Knowing you are interested in China, I do believe you can help me solve these puzzles.

Paragraph 1:
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a one-hundred-dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred-dollar bill, but the old lady had driven off. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady did so. Then she noticed something written on a napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: do not let this chain of love end with you.” Under the napkin were four more hundred-dollar bills.
Paragraph 2:
That night when the waitress got home from work, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. She was wondering how the lady knew she and her husband were in need. With the baby to be born next month, life was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and now everything is going to be all right. Knowing what had happened, her husband, Bryan, shed tears of joy and gratitude. (共165词)
