Can you imagine an ancient and quiet place Well, this is Vicenza, my hometown. Every time I have the opportunity to speak about Vicenza with foreign people who do some sightseeing in Europe,I realize that it gets less credit than it deserves. Everybody knows Venice,Rome, and Florence very well, but only a few know the attraction of Vicenza.
Vicenza has to be taken into special consideration for the important historical buildings by Andrea Palladio ( 1508— 1580 ),who was born in Padua, one of the most famous architects in the world. It was during the Renaissance (文艺复兴时期)and the next four hundred years in which Vicenza was under the protection of the Republic of Venice that the great structures were constructed, making Vicenza well-known throughout Europe and giving it the remarkable and distinctive appearance which it keeps today.
Apart from its historical district, Vicenza is surrounded by beautiful hills and countryside where you can spend time walking, sightseeing, and having delicious meals in the numerous restaurants which serve typical foods and good drinks. Moreover, in Vicenza’s countryside there are splendid villas (别墅). This is where many Venetians used to spend their summers, farming their land during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Vicenza is a must-see city for people fond of historical works. In addition, there are jazz and classical music concerts, ballets, and theatre performances, mostly during the autumn. It may be that young people feel Vicenza is not a place where they can have fun,but there are also pizzerias and pubs where contemporary music is performed, so they can have a good time there, too. Last weekend I visited Rome for the first time. I spent three busy days in the Italian capital, seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit with Christmas decorations. There are a lot of things I love about the city.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics (遗迹)from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming from another country. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can’t quite believe how old they are!
I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. I walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures (雕塑).The best part of the visit was, without doubt, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by the great Michelangelo. It was so breathtaking that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it.
In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn’t of very good quality. I made an effort to find reliable restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon. I also love eating ice cream and drinking hot chocolate under the Christmas lights.
Rome has not only lots of luxury boutiques (精品店)but also plenty of shops that were more in my price range! It was a perfect opportunity to go and buy presents for my family and friends. There was also a Christmas market, where I bought a sparkly decoration for the tree.

In its best times on the nineteenth century, thatch (茅草屋顶)played an important role in protecting British homes from the weather. But new technologies since have led to a rapid decline in thatching and many of the thatched cottages that remain have been changed beyond all recognition by developers or have run into disrepair, a rather upsetting reminder of a bygone age.
A Welsh company, however,is trying to breathe new life into some of the last traditional thatched cottages in western Wales by repairing them and letting them out as holiday homes. Called “Under the Thatch”,the company is run by Greg Stevenson, who lives in his own thatched cottage in Ceredigion. An architectural historian by training,he repairs old buildings in old-fashioned ways.
All the cottages are in attractive locations around southwest Wales. Unlike most holiday homes, the cottages are let all year round—chiefly because Greg prices them lower than many holiday properties (房屋)and he’d prefer that properties are rented just above cost price than not used at all. And with that comes a bargain or two: it’s common for a property to go for as little as 35 a night. Consequently occupancy for properties with “Under the Thatch” is at 95 percent (the average in Wales is 35 percent) .
Its success has meant that Greg has been able to buy up more old cottages and bring them back into the community. Greg has also diversified from offering only thatched cottages: he now lets out a variety of rare accommodations dotted around western styles, including a renovated (修复的)train carriage and two gypsy caravans which were used by Romanies.
Most of his thirty properties are run using environmentally friendly technologies—including solar panels and recycled furnishings. But most importantly, what the cottages all have in common is that they bring back life to local communities. Spend a weekend in “Under the Thatch” rather than in a holiday home, buy local food and visit nearby restaurants, and you will be contributing to the local economy.
12. How does the author sound when talking about thatched cottages in Paragraph 1
A. Excited.
B. Afraid.
C. Sorry.
D. Humorous.
13. What is the main reason for the success of “Under the Thatch”
A. The properties’ low prices.
B. The company’s excellent services.
C. The company’s creative designers.
D. The properties’ beautiful locations.
14. Beside thatched cottages, what does Greg’s company provide
A. Designing plans for modem cottages.
B. Other uncommon styles of holiday homes.
C. Environmentally friendly technologies.
D. Advice on developing the local economy.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Buy up Traditional Thatched Cottages
B. Protect British Homes from the Weather
C. Spend a Weekend Under the Thatch
D. Bring Properties Back into the Community

Last week when I was reading at home,my younger sister rushed in and told me an old man was lying on the ground in front of our building. I immediately took my first-aid kit and ran downstairs. He was suffering a slight heart attack. And I performed CPR on him. Luckily, an ambulance came soon and he was taken to hospital. Later that day I was told by the hospital what I did helped rescue the old man’s life. I was happy to hear that. 16 There were many people who wanted to help around the old man then. You can stay safe at work. 19 With first-aid knowledge you can create a safe work environment and help meet your workplace’s safety requirements.
It’s helpful to your future career. The first-hand experience you gain through learning first aid and using your skills could help you decide if you want to pursue a career in the health profession. 20
A. Yet at the same time I felt a bit sad.
B. I received a phone call from the hospital.
C. You can be a resource for your community.
D. Illness and injury can happen anywhere, anytime.

Penny was a little girl who lived in Alaska. It was ice-cold there. She kept praying that she could play in the green and warm gardens like we do but of course, she couldn’t.
Her father, like all the men there, didn’t have a job. He hunted seals and caught fishes, as was the custom. So her father hadn’t even heard of money and even if he had money, there weren’t any aeroplanes to take them abroad.
Now somewhere near Penny’s house was a deep, dark forest. Everyone was afraid to enter it. They said that whoever entered it would be sucked in by a magic hole.
One day, Penny was playing with her Eskimo friends when one of the boys shouted, “Hey, I dare one of you to enter the magic forest.”
No one dared. Penny picked up a twig and threw it at the edge of the forest. Nothing happened. Penny was astonished. “It’s all a legend! We can play hide-and-seek in the woods if we want, ” she thought. She walked slowly towards the woods. It was getting colder and colder as she took each step. She walked right into the middle of the forest.
There was a small hill with a great big hole right in the middle of it. She wanted to jump into it. She took a big, deep breath and jumped.
There was a sinking feeling in her stomach. She realized that she was falling down deep somewhere. But she did not land. Her head was spinning and suddenly all her fur clothes disappeared and there was a skirt and blouse instead of them. She was at the beach.
She found that she had a bag with her. Inside the bag there was a swimsuit, a mat, a book, a bottle of lotion (护肤液) and a towel. She took all these home.

The next day, they helped Penny to spread out the mat and they had a basket full of fruits which they put on the mat. Penny and her friends ran joyously to the warm sea. Oh! What fun! She wished it would never end. But after exactly one hour, it all disappeared and she was back in the forest. She hurried home.
