In a quiet Northern California neighborhood, Michael seemed like a normal 11-year-old boy. His family made use of the Californian sunshine to grow orange trees and roses. All seemed good from the outside, but Michael was troubled.
Since he was taken in at 3 years old, Michael never really connected with his parents. There was a strictness about them that his nature couldn’t understand, and he was left to himself to sort out (整理) confusing feelings and the need for connection.
Without the tie a young boy needs at home, Michael often found himself down the street at his best friend’s house. Of course, the two boys laughed, read picture books and ate junk food. But the real reason why Michael liked his friend’s home was Mr. Christensen. He was the kind of father who understands boys.
With Mr. Christensen, the boys spent hours in the garage fixing an old sports car. They drove up the California coast at high speed, feeling the salt wind wash over them. The car was too loud to allow for any conversation, which was fine with Michael. He didn’t yet know how to express his feelings; for the time being, just being able to feel them was enough.
For many young boys, the language of connection is written in the wrenches (扳手) they and their parents turn, the wrestling matches they watch, the hours of their watching clouds race by overhead. Mr. Christensen understood that boys need time to learn this language. He knew a boy learns respect and duty by being loved in an unspoken way.
Some 50 years later Michael remembers his time with Mr. Christensen. “My own father couldn’t raise me, so I was given away. My adoptive father (养父) did his best but never allowed a relationship to form between us. Luckily for me, I had Mr. Christensen. I have tried to be the kind of father he was, teaching, having fun and spending time with my child.”
4. What was the problem with young Michael
A. He had to do hard work on the farm.
B. He dropped out of school with his best friend.
C. He was given up by his parents as a little kid.
D. He was treated badly by his adoptive parents.
5. What made the two boys unable to talk in the car
A. Strong wind. B. Too loud noise. C. Busy repair work. D. Driving excitement.
6. How is the language of connection learned in the author’s opinion
A. By taking part in competitions. B. Through communication.
C. By studying hard. D. Through doing things together.
7. Who may Michael want to follow in his life
A. Mr. Christensen. B. His friends.
C. His own father. D. His adoptive parents.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. A

Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let’s go to the beach!
For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks.
Making sandcastles on the beach is a fun activity. So, bringing sand-digging tools — like a shovel (铁铲) — and a bucket is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! And that brings us to today’s expression: “bringing sand to the beach.”
“Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are futile. This means serving no purpose.
To brings and to the beach can also mean overkill. Overkill means to door have more than what is necessary or useful. Often when using this expression, we say “like”. For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach.
We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example, I could also say it is “like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant.” With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).
8. What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 2
A. Activities on a beach trip. B. Necessary things for an enjoyable beach trip.
C. Pleasure enjoyed on a beach. D. Ways to make a trip comfortable.
9. What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Useless. B. Common. C. Dangerous. D. Meaningful.
10. What does the author think of the flowers brought to the opening of a flower store
A. They are sweet. B. They are proper gifts.
C. They are not good enough. D. They are not needed there.
11. Which saying has the similar meaning to “bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”
A. Seeing is believing. B. Killing two birds with one stone.
C. Teaching a fish how to swim. D. Thinking twice before you jump.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一个英语习语Bringing sand to the beach(把沙子带到海滩)。这个习语指的是毫无意义和不必要的行为。这些行为没有任何用处。
【8题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks.(去海滩旅行,我们带几样东西,可以使旅行更愉快。例如,沙滩巾让坐在沙滩上更舒服。有些人选择带一把沙滩椅。一把沙滩伞可以保护你免受强烈的阳光照射。在海里游泳真的会让你很饿。所以很多人带冷藏箱来装食物和饮料)”可知,作者在第二段主要告诉我们愉快的海滩之旅必备的东西。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词前一句““Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary.(“把沙子带到海滩”描述的是毫无意义和不必要的行为)”以及划线单词后一句“This means serving no purpose.(这意味着没有任何意义)”可推知,此处为这些行动是徒劳的。由此推知,划线单词futile意思是“无用的”,与useless是同义词。故选A项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段的“For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach.(例如,带鲜花去花店开业就像把沙子带到海滩)”可知,在花店开业时带花就像把沙子带到海滩上一样。由此推知,那里不需要这些花。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).(这也意味着你带来的东西(三明治)的质量比你在这个地方(餐馆)找到的要差)”可知,这也意味着你带来的东西质量不如你在那里能找到的东西。由此可知,“bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”这句话的意思和(Teaching a fish how to swim)“班门弄斧”意思相近。故选C项。
D
More scientists are researching cellular senescence (细胞衰老) — a state in which cells no longer divide. Senescent cells, which buildup in older bodies, have something to do with age-related conditions such as dementia (痴呆) disease.
Scientists are researching drugs that treat senescent cells. But the most promising tool against the bad influences of senescent cells, experts say, is exercise.
Today, LeBrasseur, who directs a center on aging at Mayo, says exercise is “the most promising tool that we have” for good health in late life, and that its power spreads to our cells. Research suggests exercise prevents the build-up of senescent cells, helping the immune system (免疫系统) clear them and fight the cell damage that can affect (影响) aging.
Last year, LeBrasseur led a study that provided the first sign in humans that exercise greatly affected senescence. It cut signs in the bloodstream of the influences of senescent cells in the body. After a 12-week exercise program, researchers found that older adults had cut signs of senescence and improved body strength, physical ability and reported health. A recent study collect seven more facts — in animals and humans — for exercise as a treatment to fight against senescence cells.
While such studies are not well-known outside scientific circles, many older adults connect exercise with youthfulness. Farmer Mike Gale, 81, put in a track and field throwing circle on his large farm in California. He and some of his friends throw the discus and use other exercise equipment. “I’d like to be competing in my 90s,” Gale says. “Why not ” 95-year-old Richard Soller says exercise keeps him fit enough to deal with what comes his way — including the discovery that his wife of 62 years had developed dementia. The two sometimes walk the streets of their neighborhood together, holding hands. “Do as much as you can,” he says. “That should be the goal for anyone to stay healthy.”
12. What do we know about Le Brasseur
A. He discovered the cause of aging. B. He developed drugs to treat aging.
C. He tested on animals and humans. D. He was the first to prove exercise stops aging.
13. How did Mike Gale feel about his physical condition
A. Worried. B. Confident. C. Doubtful. D. Unsatisfied.
14. How does the author develop the last paragraph
A. By providing examples. B. By following time order.
C. By making comparisons. D. By using numbers.
15. Which is the best title for the text
A. Aging Secret Comes to Light B. Aging Diseases Seriously Affect Health
C. Exercise Is Best Tool Against Aging D. Elderly People Can Also Live Active Life
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

Christmas I Remember Best
I was 9 years old when Dad passed away and left Mom and me. Since Mom was disabled (残疾), we depended on kind-hearted neighbors.
During the first Christmas season without Dad, my expectations were high, but deep down in my heart there was an idea that the man in the red suit would not come to our little two-room house. He stopped only at houses that had fireplaces.
At the same time, there would be no gifts under the tree. In fact, there would be no tree. But that didn’t seem right. At least, a tree would help with the hurt. On Christmas Day I hurried to Petersen’s Market. A fresh layer of news now lay on the street unmarked bypassing cars; not a person was moving.
I thought that the store was closed and the unsold trees were usually thrown away. As I walked among the snow-dusted trees beside the store, old man Nels Petersen appeared out of nowhere. He drove me away.
Nels Petersen was a mean (吝啬) old man and lived alone. The following year, he setup a fence (篱笆) around the Christmas tree lot and locked the gate every night. I accepted the challenge.
On that night, I climbed the fire ladder that hugged the store wall. The next day, old Nels knew one tree was missing; he had counted them. The next year, the ladder was moved away.
Then came a Christmas that I shall always remember with warmth. My teacher at school asked our class to make Christmas cards for our favorite person, not counting our families, so I made a card for Nels Petersen. Why I included him as my favorite person, I didn’t know.
I made a beautifully decorated green tree on the card. I believed that it would be the only card he would get from anybody. I signed it and put it in his mailbox. Late Christmas Eve, when the stores were closed and everybody was home, I walked around the corner of the back of Petersen’s Market. It was in darkness. I moved along the fence secretly.

To my great surprise, the gate was open!

Just as I was about to run away, I saw the large lettered sign on the tree, which read: DON’T FORGET TO LOCK THE GATE — MERRY CHRISTMAS!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】To my great surprise, the gate was open! My first thought was that Nels deserved to lose a tree. My second thought was that this could beat rap! Nels was probably hiding somewhere ready to catch me when I stepped through the gate. I stood silently while looking around. I saw a Christmas tree standing in the center. I got in as carefully as I could. Suddenly, the tree was lit up with brilliant colors of light. The sudden brightness made me feel the whole world was watching me.
Just as I was about to run away, I saw the large lettered sign on the tree, which read: DON’T FORGET TO LOCK THE GATE — MERRY CHRISTMAS! There were presents and a box of groceries under the tree. Mr. Petersen wasn’t among the trees; he was somewhere watching me. My throat feeling tight, I called out, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Petersen!” My new friend and I had learned a lesson on the joy of giving — all because a Christmas card had touched a lonely heart and opened a locked gate. Giving is a reward in itself.

Some 50 years later, Michael remembers his time with Mr. Christensen. “My own father couldn’t raise me, so I was given away. My adoptive father (养父) did his best but never allowed a relationship to form between us. Luckily for me, I had Mr. Christensen. I have tried to be the kind of father he was, teaching, having fun and spending time with my child.”
4. What was the problem with young Michael
A. He had to do hard work on the farm.
B. He dropped out of school with his best friend.
C. He was given up by his parents as a little kid.
D. He was treated badly by his adoptive parents.
5. What made the two boys unable to talk in the car
A. Strong wind. B. Too loud noise. C. Busy repair work. D. Driving excitement.
6. How is the language of connection learned in the author’s opinion
A. By taking part in competitions. B. Through communication.
C. By studying hard. D. Through doing things together.
7. Who may Michael want to follow in his life
A. Mr. Christensen. B. His friends.
C. His own father. D. His adoptive parents.
C
Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let’s go to the beach!
For a beach trip we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable.
“Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary The actions are futile.
