A woman who lost one leg to cancer broke a world record by completing 102 marathon-length runs in 102 days. A marathon is a race that goes 42 kilometres.
Jacky Hunt-Broersma, who lives in Arizona, set her goal in mid-January in 2022.And every day since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon.
Most of the time, she runs on roads and trails near her home in Gilbert, Arizona. Sometimes she completes her runs on a running machine called a treadmill. Hunt-Broersma averages just over five hours to complete the runs.
She kept successfully completing marathon-length runs every day, reaching her goal by April 28. She would then hold the world record for completing 102 back-to-back marathon runs.
The current world record of 101 marathons was set April 10 by British runner Kate Jayden. The 35-year-old Jayden does not have a disability.
Hunt-Broersma, a native of South Africa, lost the bottom half of her left leg to a rare form of cancer in 2001. Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. But Hunt-Broersma says her investment has been well worth it.
However, she faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, she felt near collapse at 24 kilometres and began to cry. In that moment, she felt like her planned goal might not happen at all.
One of her recent runs was the world-famous Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts. She finished that race, held April 18, with a time of 5 hours, 5 minutes.
Hunt-Broersma’s main support team is her husband and their two young children. She is documenting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following.
Hunt-Broersma is hoping to inspire a single thought in others, regardless of their own physical limitations. She often tells people, “You’re stronger than you think—and you’re capable of so much more.”
24. How did Hunt-Broersma complete the continuous marathon record mostly
A. By training in the park. B. With the help of special equipment.
C. Through hard running on ordinary roads. D. By participating in the official Marathon.

Languages like Italian or Finnish can be spelled more easily because each letter of the alphabet matches to one sound. Students studying these languages can have 90 percent reading accuracy after the first year. However, students even after years of learning English are still far below Italian or Finnish students in reading accuracy.
English started as a Germanic language. It is most closely connected to German and Dutch, especially in grammar and basic vocabulary. During the Norman invasion(侵略) in the 12th century, Old English was spoken but French was used in government and legal documents. And Latin was used in religious and educational activities. As a result, more French and Latin words entered the English language. The printing press invented in the late 1400s helped to establish English spelling. The English of today is how the language was written at the time. However, the spoken language started to change in the 1500s with the pronunciation of all long vowels. For example, “bite” was pronounced closer to “beet” in 1400, before changing through the years to its current sound. The effect was that the English language had old spellings, but new sounds.
English has 26 letters in the alphabet, but over 44 individual sounds depending on the variation of spoken English. There are several sounds represented by only one letter. For example, the letter “C” can sound like an “S” as in “city”. And it also sounds like a “K” as in “cat”.
There are only 5 or 6 vowel(元音) letters in the English alphabet. They include A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y. But there are 20 different ways to sound them. At the centre is the most common vowel sound of “uhhh”. It is the most relaxed and natural sound. It takes almost no effort of the tongue or throat to create the sound. Since it takes little effort, the sound “uhhh” often makes its way into pronunciations. For example, the word “please” often turns into “PUH-lease” when someone is trying to call attention. This is another reason why spelling in English is so difficult!

Technology is developing by leaps and bounds. A device as small as a smartphone now has more processing power than rockets to the Moon once had. New tech brings many advantages, making our lives easier and opening up new opportunities. One piece of kit that’s been really taking off recently is the drone. This pilotless mini aircraft, originally developed for photography from above and warfare, is now bringing us benefits closer to home. In the last few years, tech companies such as Amazon, Alphabet and Uber have promised us delivery drones—bringing goods to our doorsteps in a matter of minutes. Progress in developing them has, however, been slow.
Drones are helping to connect with and enhance the lives of people in remote locations. In the UK, the Royal Mail wants a fleet of 500 drones to help deliver the mail to far-flung communities. Windracers, the company developing the drones, say they can fly in fog and produce 30% fewer emissions than comparable piloted aircraft. And in Coventry in the UK, construction has started on an air hub, which will act as a base for police and delivery drones. Urban-Air Port Limited is working with car-maker Hyundai on the mini-airport, known as a skyport.
Drones could also play a part in improving the health of millions of people. In Zanzibar, for example, they’re being used to spray wetlands against malaria(疟疾). And writing for BBC Future website, Harriet Constable describes an incredible development project by the University of South Australia. The plan is for drones to eventually be able to survey populations for disease by reading the blood oxygen levels of humans from the air. They’ll also be able to scan for other vital signs, like coughing and a high temperature.
It seems that the sky’s the limit for what drone technology can achieve. The only thing that sometimes keeps it grounded is regulation. Writing for the BBC, Jessica Brown says, “If our skies are to become as crowded as our streets, airspace rules need updating to prevent accidents.” There are also related problems, such as noise pollution.
32. What was the primary use of the drone
A. Exploring the Moon. B. Survey and military.
C. Special delivery or express. D. Transporting goods.
33. Which can replace the underlined word “hub” in Paragraph 2
A. Centre. B. Branch. C. Garage. D. Field.
34. What does Paragraph 3 imply
A. Drones could take over doctors’ duties in the future.
B. Drones can play a role in improving people’s health.
C. Drones can cure patients suffering from various diseases like malaria.
D. Human beings will eventually overcome all kinds of stubborn diseases.
35. What does the author mean to do by quoting Jessica Brown
A. Emphasize there is no limit for drones development.
B. Ignore the disadvantages the development of drones will bring.
C. Urge the rules of drones management need to be updated.
D. Prove the development of drones is beneficial without harming.

Desertification, the process by which fertile(肥沃的) land becomes desert, has severe impacts on food production and is worsened by climate change. 36
Africa’s Great Green Wall is a project to build an 8,000-kilometre-long forest across 11 of the continent’s countries. The project is meant to contain the growing Sahara Desert and fight climate change. 37 They include limited political support, lack of money, weak organizational structures, and not enough consideration for the environment. Just 4 million hectares(公顷) of land have been turned into forest since work on the Green Wall began 15 years ago. 38
First proposed in 2005, the project aims to plant a forest from Senegal on the Atlantic Ocean in western Africa to Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti in the east. 39 It could also reduce levels of climate-related migration in the area and capture hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the air. Several countries have struggled to keep up with the demands of the project.
40 Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan have all expanded their efforts. Ethiopia is producing 5.5 billion seedlings leading to thousands of hectares of restored land. Efforts in Eritrea and Sudan have also resulted in nearly 140,000 hectares of newly planted forest. The U.N. desertification agency says the project will need to plant an average of 8.2 million hectares yearly to reach its goal of 100 million hectares by 2030.
A. But the project faces many problems.
B. That is only 4 percent of the programme’s goal.
C. However, it is difficult to work on the Great Green Wall.
D. A quarter of Africa is under threat of food shortage.
E. Some progress has been made in recent years in the east of the continent.
F. Supporters hope that the project will create millions of green jobs in rural Africa.
G. The U.N. says up to 45 percent of Africa’s land is impacted by desertification, worse than any other continent.

Sometime during the seventh grade, two things happened to me. The first was that I got hooked on salami. I couldn’t get enough of the salty, spicy sausage. The other thing was that my mum and I weren’t getting along really well. We weren’t fighting really badly or anything. We also didn’t laugh together much anymore until that afternoon.
As far as the salami went, my mum wouldn’t buy any because she said it was too expensive and not that good for me. To prove my emerging independence, I decided to go ahead and eat what I wanted anyway. So one day I used my allowance to buy a full sausage of dry salami.
Now a problem had to be solved: Where would I put the salami I didn’t want my mum to see it. So I hid it in the only place in my room that I knew was totally safe—under my bed. There was a special corner under the bed that my mum rarely had the ambition to clean. Under the bed went the salami, back in the corner—in the dark and the dust.
A couple of weeks later, I remembered the delicious treat that was waiting for me. I peered beneath the bed and saw—not the salami that I had hidden, but some strange, green and hairy object that didn’t look like anything I had ever seen before. The salami had grown about an inch of hair, and the hair was standing straight up, as if the salami had been surprised by the sudden appearance of my face next to its hiding place. Being the picky eater I was, I was not interested in consuming any of this object. The best thing I could think of to do was … absolutely nothing.
Some time later, my mum became obsessed(对……着迷的) with spring cleaning, which in her case meant she would clean places that had never seen the light of day. Of course, that meant under my bed. I knew in my heart that she would soon find the object in its hiding place. She washed, scrubbed(擦洗), and dusted,
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then one afternoon my mum’s screams sharply came from my room. Finally, the laughter I had been trying to hold back exploded from my mouth.

第二节
One possible version:
Then one afternoon my mum’s screams sharply came from my room. Alarms went off in my head. She had found the salami! “What is it, Mum ” I yelled as I ran into my room. “There is something under your bed!” “What ” I opened my eyes very wide to show my complete innocence. I got down to look under my bed. “Watch out! Maybe it’s alive,” she shouted. Abruptly she got up and left the room, only to return five seconds later with the broom. Using the handle of the broom, she cautiously poked the salami several times. It didn’t move. As she poked the salami harder, I could hardly hold back my laughter.
Finally, the laughter I had been trying to hold back exploded from my mouth. She dropped the broom and looked at me. “What’s so funny ” my mum asked. “Salami,” I gasped for breath. “Mum, it’s a salami—you know, one of those big salami sausages!” I managed to explain the whole thing to her despite my uncontrollable laughter. She had the strangest mixed expression on her face that I had ever seen. Her hair was standing on end, and her face was beaded with sweat. Though scared, I couldn’t help laughing again. And then the miracle happened. My mum started to laugh, too. First just a nervous release, but then it turned into the full-on belly laugh.

What gift do you usually expect A card, a bag or a computer Here is a different story about the American girl Adrianna Edwards. Edwards spent a lot of her time walking 14 miles nearly every day. In a few weeks, she lost 25 pounds. But that was not her purpose.
Edwards spent hours on foot to get to work. The long walk was about to end, thanks to a couple. She was doing a part-time job in a restaurant. When the couple wanted more ice cream, she got them some extra. Hours after leaving, the couple returned not looking for ice cream but offering her a car. The couple had heard that Edwards walked to her workplace. They just wanted to help her save more time to prepare for her college life. Edwards was so touched by that.
The next morning, the first thing Edwards did was look out her window to see if it was actually there, or if she dreamed it. She was about to have a lot more time. Walking to and from work took her about 4.5 hours. With a vehicle, she could drive back and forth in about 30 minutes. The couple gave her a note saying that hopefully someday she would just pay it forward.
