B
It was late—an unrecognized and slow hour. In front of me was a large dog, showing his jaws so hard that his teeth gave a loud sound with each bark. His eyes were locked on me, desperate for the toy in my hand. But he wasn’t playing-he was feeling uneasy.
As I cautiously held my ground, his bark changed to a shout, then he gave a short and frightening roar. That was when my unease gave way to something far more primitive: fear.
This was no ordinary dog. Dyngo, ten-year-old, had been trained to push his six-stone body toward enemies, locking his jaws around them. This dog had saved thousands of lives. Now he was in my flat in Washington DC. Just 72 hours earlier, I had travelled across the country to get Dyngo back from Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, Arizona, so that he could live out his remaining years with me.
That first night, May 9, 2016, after we’d settled into my hotel room, Dyngo sat on the bed waiting for me. As I was gradually sleeping, I felt his body moving, and I smiled: Dyngo is a dog who dreams. The next morning, when I came out from the bathroom after a shower, it was like stepping into a hen house massacre (屠宰场): feathers floated in the air. In the middle of the bed was Dyngo, panting over a pile of torn-pieces pillows.
On the flight home, Dyngo was allowed to sit at my feet in the broad first row, but he soon had bouts of vomiting (呕吐) in between his attempts to tear the blanket I’d brought him. The pilot announced Dyngo’s military status, inspiring applause from the whole cabin. When we reached my flat, we both collapsed from exhaustion. It would be our last bit of shared peace for many months.
4. Why did the author say Dyngo was no ordinary dog
A. Because it was a large and fierce dog.
B. Because it could live with anyone peacefully.
C. Because it was once a trained military dog.
D. Because it had saved thousands of lives in Washington DC.
5. What can we conclude from Paragraph 4
A. Dreaming is an abnormal behavior for Dyngo.
B. Dyngo enjoys tearing things up like other dogs.
C. Dyngo always prepares to wait for his owner after a shower.
D. Panting over a pillow is Dyngo’s most favorite activity.
6. How was their flight home according to the passage
A. It was tiring but inspiring that Dyngo received passengers’ recognition.
B. It was disappointing because everyone was frightened by Dyngo.
C. It was annoyed that Dyngo fell ill on board unexpectedly.
D. It was peaceful and smooth without any bothers.
7. Where is this text most likely from
A. A news report. B. A guidebook.
C. A research paper. D. A magazine.
C 5. B 6. A 7. D
根据第三段的“This was no ordinary dog. Dyngo, ten-year-old, had been trained to push his six-stone body toward enemies, locking his jaws around them.(这不是一只普通的狗。10岁的Dyngo接受的训练是将他6英石的身体推向敌人,用嘴咬住敌人。)”和最后一段的“The pilot announced Dyngo’s military status, inspiring applause from the whole cabin.(飞行员宣布了Dyngo的军衔,整个机舱都为他鼓掌。)”
根据第四段的“The next morning, when I came out from the bathroom after a shower, it was like stepping into a hen house massacre : feathers floated in the air. In the middle of the bed was Dyngo, panting over a pile of torn-pieces pillows.(第二天早上,当我洗完澡从浴室出来时,感觉就像走进了一场鸡舍屠杀:羽毛在空中飘动。在床中央的是Dyngo,它气喘吁吁地躺在一堆破枕头上。)”可知,Dyngo把枕头咬坏了,也就是Dyngo和其他狗一样喜欢撕东西。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“The pilot announced Dyngo’s military status, inspiring applause from the whole cabin. When we reached my flat, we both collapsed from exhaustion.(飞行员宣布了Dyngo的军衔,整个机舱都为他鼓掌。当我们到达我的公寓时,我们俩都累倒了。)”可知,在他们回家的航班上Dyngo得到乘客们的认可,这次航班虽然很累,但也很鼓舞人心。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段的“In front of me was a large dog, showing his jaws so hard that his teeth gave a loud sound with each bark. His eyes were locked on me, desperate for the toy in my hand.(在我的面前有一条大狗,它的下颚非常用力,每一次吠叫都使牙齿发出响亮的声音。它的眼睛盯着我,渴望着我手里的玩具。)”可知,本文主要介绍的是军犬Dyngo,因此可能是来自于杂志,故选D。
C
Wood from a tree that has just been cut down will shrink (收缩) considerably over time. This shrinkage is caused by water within the wood escaping into the atmosphere. The drying process of wood is known as “seasoning”. There are actually two ways to season wood. One way is to allow the natural drying process to occur. The other is to put it in a special oven called a kiln.
During the seasoning process, water is removed from the wood until the water content of the wood is approximately equal to the moisture (湿度) of the air around it. These changes in size due to shrinkage are not uniform. They depend on the kinds of trees, the way trees are cut, and the surrounding conditions.
Even after seasoning, there will always be some small changes in size due to changes in the moisture of the surrounding air. For example, last year I used a 230 mm wide piece of eastern white pine wood to make a door. It changed in width across the grain (花纹), shrinking by 2 mm from the original in the winter and expanding by 3 mm from the original in the summer.
The water content of wood changes according to the seasons even when it is kept indoors. Wood is often painted to prevent sharp changes in moisture content, which cause expansion and shrinkage. However, no paint can completely block the passage of moisture. It only acts to slow down the transfer of water to or from the wood. The moisture content of unpainted wood inside a house may change according to the seasons from 4% to about 14%, while the moisture content of a painted piece of kiln- dried wood in the same house will only vary around the 8% line. Wood that has been naturally dried to around 13% moisture content and then painted will continue to dry gradually until it reaches about the same percentage of moisture as painted kiln-dried wood.
8. What does the underlined word “uniform” mean in Paragraph 2
A Identical. B. Visible. C. Measurable. D. Concrete.
9. How much does the width of the door differ between in the winter and summer
A. 1 mm. B. 2 mm. C. 3 mm. D. 5 mm.
10. What can we learn from this passage
A. Wood can be “seasoned” by painting it.
B. Kiln-dried wood does not later change size.
C. The moisture content of wood changes outdoors.
D. Painted wood stays away from expansion and shrinkage.
11. What does the data indicate in the last paragraph
A. The changes of water content in wood varies.
B. Painted wood is free from shrinkage.
C. Painting wood is not an effective way.
D. Water transfers more slowly in painted wood.
A 9. D 10. C 11. A
文章第二段提到“They depend on the kinds of trees, the way trees are cut, and the surrounding conditions.(它们取决于树木的种类、砍伐树木的方式以及周围的环境条件)”,“they”指代上文的“these changes in size(这些尺寸的变化)”,由此可知,尺寸的变化取决于树的种类、砍树的方式和周围环境,因此尺寸的变化是不一样的。
由文章第三段中的“It changed in width across the grain (花纹), shrinking by 2 mm from the original in the winter and expanding by 3 mm from the original in the summer.(它在整个纹理的宽度上发生了变化,在冬天比原来收缩了2毫米,在夏天比原来扩大了3毫米)”可知,相对原尺寸,门的宽度在冬天时收缩2毫米,在夏天时扩大3毫米,因此门在冬天和夏天的宽度差距是2+3=5毫米。
由最后一段中的“The water content of wood changes according to the seasons even when it is kept indoors.(即使放在室内,木材的含水量也会随着季节的变化而变化)”可推知,在户外,木头的水分含量是会变化的。
由最后一段中的“The moisture content of unpainted wood inside a house may change according to the seasons from 4% to about 14%, while the moisture content of a painted piece of kiln- dried wood in the same house will only vary around the 8% line.(房屋内未粉刷木材的含水率随季节变化,从4%到14%左右,而同一房屋内一幅漆过的窑干木材的含水率仅在8%左右)”可知,在同一个房间内,刷漆和未刷漆的木头的水分变化幅度是不一样的。故选A。
D
Some people wake up before the sun rises above, go for a run and eat a healthy breakfast, all before many others get out of bed. Waking up that early might sound tiring to late risers, but can a night owl (夜猫子) become an early bird
“It is possible to make the change, but it’s not easy,” said Michelle Drerup, director of behavioral sleep medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. “A true night owl doesn’t really feel great early in the morning when they wake up, especially when they’re starting to change this.”
A person’s tendency to be a night owl, early bird or some kind in between is known as their chronotype (生物钟). Depending on that, people are likely to be more awake during certain times of the day and sleepier during others. It is determined by a combination of nature and life style, scientists have found.
If you want to wake up earlier, make the change gradually. Drerup recommended slowly setting your wake-up alarm earlier by 15 to 20 minutes every few days over the course of several weeks until you’re adjusted to your schedule. Sticking to it is the key.
“Limit exposure (接触) to light in the hour before bed, such as by staying away from screens,” Drerup said. Light blocks the body's production of melatonin (褪黑色素) which is thought to set our circadian rhythm (昼夜节律). And in the morning, try to get exposure to light as soon as you wake up, to end melatonin production. Avoid exciting activities late in the evening. Instead of exercising at night, try working out in the morning or afternoon. You may also need to change your meal times to earlier time in the day.
If being a night owl works for you, there is actually no need to change your sleep schedule. But staying up late becomes a problem when you must wake up early for work and school. It can also increase your risk of developing health.
12. What is a feature of night owls
A. They tend to be more awake than an early bird.
B. Their sleeping pattern can never be changed.
C. They might not feel good when getting up early.
D. Their habit of sleeping late can ruin their health.
13. What might cause people to become night owls
A. Their sleeping patterns.
B. Their behavior during sleep.
C. Their tendency to stay awake.
D. Their ability to adapt to change.
14. Which of the following may help a night owl become an early bird
A. Doing more exercise before sleeping.
B. Avoiding exposure to light after waking up.
C. Setting alarm clock earlier each day.
D. Trying to sleep early and wake up early.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The risks of sleeping late.
B. How night owls change their sleep schedule.
C. The benefits of becoming an early bird.
D. How to lead a healthy life.
C 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第二段“A true night owl doesn’t really feel great early in the morning when they wake up, especially when they’re starting to change this. (真正的夜猫子早上醒来时感觉不太好,尤其是当他们开始改变这种情况时)”,可知夜猫子的特点是他们早起时可能感觉不太好。故选C。
13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“A person’s tendency to be a night owl, early bird or some kind in between is known as their chronotype (生物钟). Depending on that, people are likely to be more awake during certain times of the day and sleepier during others. It is determined by a combination of nature and life style, scientists have found.( 一个人成为夜猫子、早起鸟或介于两者之间的某种鸟的倾向被称为他们的生物钟。根据这一点,人们可能在一天中的某些时间更清醒,在其他时间更困。科学家发现,这是由自然和生活方式的结合决定的)”和最后一段“If being a night owl works for you, there is actually no need to change your sleep schedule. (如果做一个夜猫子对你有效,那么实际上没有必要改变你的睡眠时间表)”,可知人们的睡眠模式导致他们成为夜猫子。故选A。
根据第四段“If you want to wake up earlier, make the change gradually. Drerup recommended slowly setting your wake-up alarm earlier by 15 to 20 minutes every few days over the course of several weeks until you’re adjusted to your schedule. Sticking to it is the key. (如果你想早点醒来,慢慢地改变。德鲁普建议在几周的时间里,每隔几天缓慢地设置早15到20分钟的闹钟,直到你适应了你的时间表。坚持是关键)”和第五段“Light blocks the body's production of melatonin (褪黑色素) which is thought to set our circadian rhythm (昼夜节律). And in the morning, try to get exposure to light as soon as you wake up, to end melatonin production. Avoid exciting activities late in the evening. Instead of exercising at night, try working out in the morning or afternoon.
根据第一段“Some people wake up before the sun rises above, go for a run and eat a healthy breakfast, all before many others get out of bed. Waking up that early might sound tiring to late risers, but can a night owl (夜猫子) become an early bird (一些人在太阳升起之前醒来,跑步,吃一顿健康的早餐,所有这些都是在其他许多人起床之前。

A. Identical. B. Visible. C. Measurable. D. Concrete.
D
Some people wake up before the sun rises above go for a run and eat a healthy breakfast, all before many others get out of bed.
