Chinese diving queens Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi were, unsurprisingly, among the brightest stars on the platform at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023. Together, the two teenagers reached the top step of the podium (领奖台) with a nearly perfect performance in women’s double diving. Then, the two young athletes battled it out in the women’s single 10m platform, when Quan outperformed Chen to win the champion. With both Quan and Chen’s final scores exceeding 430 points, none of the other divers came close, including the bronze medalist (280.50).
Quan and Chen are both the closest of partners and toughest of rivals (对手). This seemingly complicated relationship, to themselves, however, is very simple. They are simply best friends that have grown up together. “Quan shines in so many ways and she is always energetic during training and competition.” Although Quan is always described as a talkative and funny girl by teammates, the 16-year-old is famous for giving extremely short answers to media questions.
Quan and Chen became household names in China after their performance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when Quan won the women’s 10m platform gold and Chen won the silver. “As athletes, we both have the desire to win. That is why we both work extremely hard and fight for the same goal.” said Chen. “She is the best encouragement to me and our true motivation.”
But in Quan’s eyes Chen is the more hardworking one of the two. “She always tries her best at training and competition. I’m not as hardworking as she is,” Quan added. Already collecting Olympic gold and numerous world titles, Quan and Chen stand at the top of world diving. But their sporting dreams remain unfulfilled, with both targeting gold at the Paris Olympics next summer. “I hope my partner always has a champion’s heart to face future competitions and the challenges ahead.” said Chen Quan, in her typically brief way, added: “I wish her the same.”

With the explosion of chatbots like ChatGPT driving the tech boom many people have considered the fear in mind: will AI replace human beings Discussion in the media would have us believe that such fear is unnecessary. However, the runaway success of a Chinese AI-powered digital portrait generator (生成器) has ignited such fears again, especially among social media users.
Users of the mobile app need to pay 9.9 yuan ($1.4) and upload at least 20 recent portraits each to get a digital clone, which can be used to create different types of portraits fit for ID purposes, formal occasions or even everyday lifestyle.
According to an online survey from lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu, 72% of the users preferred the photo created by the generator to those created by a renowned professional portrait photography chain in China. Facial expressions, lighting, overall appearance ... the whole range of technical aspects seemed superior. Take me for example, most importantly, I didn’t need to spend more time and money in dressing up and striking unnatural poses in front of a group of unfamiliar people. I could get various photos at the price of, say, a cup of Starbucks coffee, without having to step out of my home.
So, in the next step, will photographers, image specialists and such people lose their jobs Unlikely.
Tech without the human touch has its own shortcomings. I soon discovered that many of my friends also tried out the app, and their portraits had the same or similar poses and costumes etc.— a kind of one-size-fits-all setting. Which is to say that homogenization (均质化) makes offline photo studies a necessity still. It’s too early to say that AI portrait apps will replace offline photo studios.
Some people feel AIGC (生成式人工智能) may be just a passing tech trend. A real-world assessment took place between AI doctors and human doctors in June. To everyone’s surprise, human doctors scored an average of 7.5 out of 10, while AI doctors scored 7.2. AI doctors’ recommendations, however, were found to be 96 percent as good as those of top-level physicians.
Ma Ting, a professor of neuroinformatics said when doctors make decisions based on patients’ diagnoses, they consider multidimensional data, which are difficult for AI to access and assess. “To fully allow AI to move from its general understanding to advanced intelligence, we still need more research, more data and more intelligent algorithms.” Ma said.
8. What does the underlined word “ignited” mean in the article
A. Reduced. B. Caused. C. Increased. D. Reminded.
9. What does the survey show us according to paragraph 3
A. Most users prefer AI-generated portraits for formal occasions.
B. Most users prefer well-known portraits photography chains.
C. Most users believe that AI-generated portraits are unique and personalized.
D. Most users value convenience and cost-effectiveness by the portrait generator.
10. Why does the author believe that offline photo studios is still a necessity
A. AI portrait apps offer a variety of poses and costumes.
B. AI-generated portraits lack uniqueness of an individual.
C. offline photo studios offered the similar poses and costumes.
D. Offline photo studios have a kind of one-size-fits-all setting.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. AI can consider multidimensional date when diagnosing patients.
B. Doctors make decisions based merely on AI assistance.
C. AI has moved from its general understanding to advanced intelligence.
D. Further improvement to AI’s capabilities is needed at present.
D
Mars has fascinated humans since we first set eyes on it as a star-like object in the night sky. Over the last century, everything we’ve learned about Mars suggests that the planet was once quite capable of providing ecosystems. Unfortunately, the planet is now covered by a thin carbon dioxide atmosphere and cannot support earthly life-forms. The soil contains compounds that would be toxic to life. Although water does exist on Mars, it’s locked into the planet’s icy polar caps and buried, perhaps in abundance, beneath the Martian surface.
Since the 1960s, humans have sent dozens of spacecraft to study Mars. Early missions were flybys (近天体探测飞行), with spacecraft snapping photos as they traveled past rapidly. Later, probes pulled into orbit around Mars; more recently, landers and rovers have touched down on the surface. But the thin Martian atmosphere makes landing tricky, and more than 60 percent of such attempts have failed. Early highlights of Mars missions include NASA’s Mariner 4 spacecraft, which captured the first close-up images of this foreign world in 1965. In 1971, the Soviet space program sent the first spacecraft, Mars 3, into Martian orbit. It returned roughly eight months of observations about the planet’s atmosphere, weather, and geology (地质状况). The mission also sent a lander to the surface, but it returned data for only about 20 seconds before going quiet. Over the following decades, orbiters returned far more detailed data on the planet’s atmosphere and surface, and finally cleared the misunderstanding, widely held by scientists since the late 1800s, that Martian canals were built by an alien civilization. They also uncovered some truly dramatic features: the small world possesses the largest volcanoes in the solar system, and one of the largest canyons (峡谷).
Once every 26 months, Earth and Mars are lined up in a way that minimizes travel time and expense, enabling spacecraft to make the interplanetary journey in roughly half a year. Now, three countries are sending spacecraft to Mars: The United Arab Emirates, China, and the United States. All of the robotic activity is, of course, laying the preparation work for sending humans to the next world over. NASA is targeting July 2035 as a reasonable time for sending a spacecraft, aiming to set the first boots on Mars. Private spaceflight companies such as SpaceX are also getting into the Mars game. Soon, in one way or another, humanity may finally know whether our neighboring planet ever hosted life — and whether there’s a future for our species on another world.
12. Which of the following is a reason for the failure to host life on Mars according to the text
A. Carbon dioxide atmosphere wraps Mars. B. There is no trace of water.
C. The soil is rich in compounds. D. A thin toxic gas appears in the atmosphere.
13. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. All the attempts of Landing on Mars failed.
B. An alien civilization built canals on Mars.
C. No other volcanoes in the universe are larger than those on Mars.
D. Efforts have been made to take a closer look at Mars over decades.
14. What is the current expectation for Mars exploration according to the text
A. NASA will send the first pair of boots to Mars in 2035.
B. Astronauts will take a walk on Mars in the near future.
C. Private spaceflight companies will create a Mars game.
D. More countries will send spacecraft to Mars.
15. What might be the best time for a new attempt if NASA failed its launch to Mars in 2035
A. In 2035. B. In 2036. C. In 2037. D. In 2038.

It was a sunny day. Anabia, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anabia was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was disturbing her today.
Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was. Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Rida was quick, smart and intelligent. Anabia became jealous of Rida’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anabia’s roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Saima wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒). Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Saima.
Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia’s carelessness and told her that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to come prepared for the contest that had been announced a week in advance. Anabia’s best friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything, much to Anabia’s surprise and disappointment.

But in Quan’s eyes, Chen is the more hardworking one of the two.

With the explosion of chatbots like ChatGPT driving the tech boom, many people have considered the fear in mind: will AI replace human beings Discussion in the media would have us believe that such fear is unnecessary.
A Most users prefer AI-generated portraits for formal occasions.
B Most users prefer well-known portraits photography chains.
C. Most users believe that AI-generated portraits are unique and personalized.
D. Most users value convenience and cost-effectiveness by the portrait generator.
10. Why does the author believe that offline photo studios is still a necessity
A AI portrait apps offer a variety of poses and costumes.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. D

根据划线词上文“With the explosion of chatbots like ChatGPT driving the tech boom, many people have considered the fear in mind: will AI replace human beings Discussion in the media would have us believe that such fear is unnecessary.(随着像ChatGPT这样的聊天机器人的爆炸式增长推动了科技的繁荣,许多人都在考虑这样一个恐惧:人工智能会取代人类吗?媒体的讨论会让我们相信这种恐惧是不必要的)”可知,经过讨论,我们担心人工智能会取代人类是不必要的。再根据划线词所在句中的However可知,此处与上文形成转折关系,说明中国人工智能数字肖像生成器的巨大成功再次引发了这种担忧。由此可知,划线词ignited与caused“引起”意思接近。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“According to an online survey from lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu, 72% of the users preferred the photo created by the generator to those created by a renowned professional portrait photography chain in China.
根据第五段中的“I soon discovered that many of my friends also tried out the app, and their portraits had the same or similar poses and costumes etc.— a kind of one-size-fits-all setting. Which is to say that homogenization (均质化) makes offline photo studies a necessity still.(我很快发现我的许多朋友也试用了这个应用程序,他们的照片有相同或相似的姿势和服装等——一种一刀切的设置。也就是说,同质化使得线下照片研究仍然是必要的)”可推知,作者认为,线下照相馆仍然是必要的,因为人工智能生成的人像缺乏个人的独特性。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Ma Ting, a professor of neuroinformatics said when doctors make decisions based on patients’ diagnoses, they consider multidimensional data, which are difficult for AI to access and assess. “To fully allow AI to move from its general understanding to advanced intelligence, we still need more research, more data and more intelligent algorithms.” Ma said.(神经信息学教授马婷表示,当医生根据患者的诊断做出决定时,他们会考虑多维数据,而人工智能很难访问和评估这些数据。“为了让人工智能从一般的理解完全发展到高级智能,我们还需要更多的研究、更多的数据和更智能的算法。”马说)”可知,最后一段讲述了人工智能的局限性,目前人工智能的能力还需要进一步提升。故选D。
15. What might be the best time for a new attempt if NASA failed its launch to Mars in 2035
A. In 2035. B. In 2036. C. In 2037. D. In 2038.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. C
