A few weeks before Thanksgiving one year, my husband and I decided to invite a guest over for the holiday. I called the old people's home and they suggested Ilse, a woman I thought would be gentle, but I was wrong. Ilse
was a stubborn(执拗的) 78-year-old lady, and she enjoyed gambling(赌博).
On Thanksgiving, within minutes of arriving, Ilse dropped her purse on the table heavily and, with a wide smile, drank down the glass of wine I offered. By the end of the evening, this strange old lady became our friend.
Two weeks later, I invited her to lunch.
Day by day, she became more like a grandma. “Get a child! You're not getting any younger!”she always shouted at me. Soon I became her personal driver too. The more I helped, the more she asked of me. But when I asked her only child Ralph to help, he refused.
A few months later, I helped Ilse find a caregiver because she was too old to live alone, yet she was still the same stubborn lady. Once, I threw away the old table in her house which got her fall over. She was so angry that she didn't talk to me for a week! But at the end of that week, her caregiver called, saying she died of a sudden heart attack. I cried my heart out.
However, what was completely unexpected was that Ilse left all her money to me-$50,000! I knew I couldn't spend the money on myself. I gave it away to some poor kids.
Ilse wasn't a soft-spoken lady. Yet the gamble I took years ago when I called the old people's home and met Ilse made my life richer. I took a chance on humanity(人性), and Ilse's friendship was the jackpot(最高奖). 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

When your father comes home from work, you can easily tell if he smoked a lot during the day even though he doesn't have a cigarette in his hand. Why is that It is because of something known as "third-hand smoke".
You might know about the term "second-hand smoke", but do you know what "third-hand smoke" is When someone has finished smoking, toxic( 有毒的) chemicals stick to their hair, clothes, cars and furniture. These chemicals can hang around long after second-hand smoke has cleared from a room. But they can still be found
by the nose, according to The New York Times.
"Your nose isn't lying," said Professor Jonathan Winickoff at Harvard Medical School, US. The stuff is so toxic that your brain is telling you: “Get away.”
However, few people think about the perils of third-hand smoke. They don't think that breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm their health. But it is dangerous, especially for children.
Scientists say that developing brains can be harmed easily even by a small amount of toxins(毒素) in the air.
For example, among the 250 toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke, one of them is lead( 铅), and the study shows contact(联系) with a tiny amount of lead in the air can lower your IQ.
"Simply closing the kitchen door to smoke is not protecting kids enough," said Philip Landrigan, head of the Children's Environmental Health Center in New York. He suggested that parents should always smoke outside to keep their children away from third-hand smoke.
31. According to this text, how can we tell if there is third-hand smoke
A.By seeing. B.By hearing. C.By smelling. D.By touching.

C. Toxic chemicals that were left over on people's hair, clothes, cars and furniture. D. Toxic chemicals that were found in the cigarettes.
33. What does the underlined word "perils" in the text mean in Chinese
A. 来源 B. 危险 C. 构成 D. 气味
34. Which paragraph gives an example to show third-hand smoke is harmful
