His mother couldn’t get the paper out, either. A week later, the paper was still in the boy’s nose. His nose began to have a bad smell.
So his mother took the boy to a hospital. The doctor looked up at the child’s nose, but she couldn’t get the paper out. She said she had to cut the boy’s nose to get the paper out.
The boy’s mother came home looking sad. She didn’t want her child to have his nose cut. The next day she took the boy to her friend Sidney who lived in a house with an old lady called May. May wanted to see the child, so the child let her look up his nose.
“Yes, I can see it,” May said. “It will be out soon”
As she spoke, she shook some black pepper (胡椒粉) on the child’s nose. The child gave a mighty sneeze and the paper flew out. His mother was surprised. May told his mother to take the boy to the seaside for a swim, for the salt water would go up his nose and stop the bad smell. So the lucky boy didn’t have to go to the hospital to have his nose cut.

These days a green building means more than just the colour of the paint. Green buildings can also refer to environmentally friendly houses, factories and offices. “Green building means reducing the effect of the building on the land,” Taryn Holowka of the US Green Building Council in Washington, DC, said.
According to Holowka, buildings account for 65 percent of total US electricity use. But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often located near public transportation, such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of natural resources, such as gasoline, and give off pollution.
Green buildings are often built on developed land, so that the buildings don’t destroy forests or other wild habitats. Marty Dettling is project manager for a building that puts these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country’s first green residential high-rise (高层的) building.
According to Dettling, “We’ve reduced our energy consumption (消耗量) by one-third and our water by 50 percent.”
The Solaire cuts energy in part by using solar power. The Solaire also has lights that automatically (自动地) turn off when people leave the room. Plus, the building has lots of windows. This allows people to use the sun for light instead of lamps during the day.
28. Green buildings are ______
A. far away from public transportation B. built in the forests
C. earth-friendly D. often built on developing land
29. Green buildings are built near public transportation ultimately for the purpose of ______
A. taking buses or subways easily B. saving natural resources
C. driving private cars less D. protecting the environment
30. The Solaire is thought to be “green” because it ______
A. locates near a forest B. lies close to stores
C. reduces energy and water use D. was built with green materials
31. Which of the following is used to cut energy consumption in the Solaire
A. Closing windows as long as possible B. Reducing the time of using lights
C. Recycling solar power D. Using natural resources
D
Chinese people take their food and eat it extremely seriously. Eating is a communal (公共的), social, and human experience in China. Sharing a meal is a sign of friendship and trust. Eating plays a central role in friendship, business, medicine, family and love. In short, food is life.
When eating, the rice is separated into your own personal bowl, but the dishes are placed in communal bowls in the centre of the table and everybody helps themselves with chopsticks. It’s considered polite, and sign of respect and friendship, to encourage other people to eat plenty of the good bits, even to pick up food with your chopsticks and drop it into their rice bowls for them.
Food is an important component of weddings, funerals and almost all Chinese festival. New Year is the time for dumplings; the Dragon Boat Festival is the time for sticky rice zongzi wrapped in leaves, and the Mid-Autumn Day is the time for moon cakes. The dinner table is the best forum (讨论会) to close business deals, and it’s the number one thing to do with friends.
Chinese women express their admiration for the opposite sex by cooking delicious meals of many courses, and these days it’s the other way round, too.
In short, if you want to get to know Chinese people, understand Chinese culture and thinking and get into Chinese life, you have to eat and appreciate Chinese food.

The key to living a happy life
Research has shown that being happy does not rely on material possessions or high-flying achievements. 36 If you want to improve your life and the level of happiness, there are some simple ways.
37 Always look for the light at the end of the tunnel (隧道). Avoid seeing things in a negative way. To lead a happy life the glass should always be half full and not half empty. People who think this tend to be happier.
You need to realize that money does not provide a happy life. Money can provide you with a more comfortable life. Of course you should make enough money to meet your basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing. 38 Some lottery (彩票) winners have stated that winning the lottery did not make them happier, and in fact it brought about more problems.
Make sure that you keep in touch with your family and friends. 39 Isolating (孤立) yourself from people will only lead to unhappiness.
40 Unfortunately many people think that a job change will have a positive effect on their happiness, but in fact it can cause stress. If you have a positive view on your present work, you will make the best of your job and feel a sense of fulfillment (满足).
A. Work hard to get more in return.
B. Be happy with your present job.
C. You need to train yourself to be more optimistic.
D. Socializing and spending time with those we love helps us to lead a happy life.
E. Therefore, try to make more money to feel happier than those who earn less than you.
F. However, any money that you make beyond that will not always make you feel happier.
G. Instead, it depends on our view about life and the relationships we have with people around.

Everything about moving day was a puzzle. I didn’t know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again.
Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she’d just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman(匠人) from China.
Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before.
After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she’d meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn’t hear her come in. “What just broke ” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma’s bowl. “I can’t believe you broke this,” she said.
“Well, I can’t believe we have to live here now! I can’t believe I have to switch schools, and I can’t believe you didn’t even meet me after my first day” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me.
The broom s wept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom’s bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again.
“I’m sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can’t make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage.

第二部分
Paragraph 1:
“Are you sure you want to throw that out ” he asked. My throat twisted into a knot. “It’s broken,” I murmured. “That’s a simple e.” In their apartment, Mr Chen spread the broken pieces out like a jigsaw puzzle. After finding each match, he taught me to delicately rebuild the bowl, filling in the crack lines with a special paint. Finally, the bowl was together again. I held it gently in the palm of my hand and admired it for long. Slightly different, it was as beautiful as before. I couldn’t wait to show it to Mom and rushed back home.
Paragraph 2:
I brought the repaired bowl into her room. Obviously, she was more than surprised to see the bowl again. “It’s amazing” she marveled, running her fingertip over the fixed cracks. “Mr Chen helped me mend it. He is a superb craftsman,” I said with a grin. “Definitely. After being repaired, it looks much stronger than before” said Mom, smiling radiantly. I sat on the edge of her bed, and Mom reached out to me. Our hands joined with crisscrossed fingers, we both knew this was a new beginning.
