" When there were only three cows left to be marked,I finally saw Dad driving slowly down the hill.
As he approached,we stopped to wait for him.He drove over slowly, parked his car and got out with great difficulty. He made his way to the rope, not an easy task at 93.Tears were running down his face as well as mine.Dad's tears weren't tears of sadness for what he was no longer able to do,but tears of thankfulness that he was able to pull the rope for three cows. His last words when he left,"There,I worked, now I can eat!"
My dad loved to work and to feel productive, and that day, those three cows were just what he needed. It was the last time my dad would pull the rope.At the age of 95,my dad left us forever,a day he had longed for.He was such a diamond in my life.My dad passed on his love of birds and all farm animals to me.He used to be a brave World War II pilot. He loved my mother, his family, his country and his friends. The lessons he taught me are ones that will never be forgotten.I am grateful for the time and beautiful memories.

13.(10分) The Silk Road is neither an actual road nor a single route. The term instead refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than 2,000 years from the Han Dynasty of China.German geographer and traveler Ferdinand von Richthofen first used the term"Silk Road"in 1877 to describe the well﹣traveled pathway of goods between Europe and East Asia. The term also serves as a symbol for the exchange of goods and ideas between various cultures.Although the trade network is commonly referred to as the Silk Road, some historians favor the term"Silk Routes" because it better shows the many paths taken by traders.
The Silk Road covered over 7,000 kilometers across some of the world's most difficult landscapes, including the Gobi Desert and the Pamir Mountains. With no one government to provide upkeep, the roads were typically in poor condition.Robber s were common. So traders joined together in caravans(商队) with camels or other pack animals.Over time, large pubs called caravanserais appeared to house traveling businessmen.Few people traveled the entire route, giving rise to a host of middlemen and trading posts along the way.
A lot of goods traveled along the Silk Road.Businessmen carried silk from China to Europe, where it dressed royalty and wealthy supporters.Other favorite goods from Asia included jewelry, oil and tea.In exchange, horses, textiles(纺织品) and other goods traveled eastward.
It is hard to overstate the importance of the Silk Road in history.Cultures and ideas spread along the Silk Road just as often as goods.Towns along the route grew into multicultural cities. The exchange of information gave rise to new technologies that would change the world. The Age of Exploration gave rise to faster routes between the East and West, but parts of the Silk Road continued to be important pathways among varied cultures.Today, parts of the Silk Road are listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

14.(10分) Scientists have long known that a good night's sleep is important for brain health, but now there's great news for people who like to take a little nap(小睡) during the day.A new study found that daytime naps can be good for the brain.
Researchers from the University College London in the UK and the University of the Re﹣public in Urugua y looked at small sections of people's DNA.There are 97 sections of DNA in humans that can identify whether a person is likely to be a daytime napper or not.The scientists used data from 35,080 people in the UK between the ages of 40 and 69.They identified people in the study whose DNA made them more likely to nap during the day and people whose DNA indicated they didn't need to nap.The team compared brain scans(扫描检查) of the nappers with scans of the non﹣nappers and noticed some key differences in their brains.
The results showed that those who liked to nap had larger brains than those who didn't.The brain naturally shrinks with age,so this meant that the brains of people who liked to nap aged more slowly than people who didn't nap.The people who napped had brains that were about 9 cubic inches larger than those who didn't nap, which was equal to slowing down aging by three to six years.
Dr.Victoria Garfield, who worked on the study, said the research could help scientists understand how people can keep the health of their brains as they get older. She added,"I hope studies such as this one showing the health benefits can help to reduce any bad impression that still exists around daytime napping."
The researchers didn't have information about how long the naps of people in the study lasted.Other studies, however, have suggested that naps of about 30 minutes are the most helpful for the brain.Taking a nap earlier in the day, rather than in the late afternoon,is less likely to disturb a person's sleep at night.
(1)How did the researchers get the results?
A.By giving examples.
B.By doing experiments.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By referring to documents.
(2)What does the underlined word"shrinks" in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Damages.
B.Grows.

B.Teenagers don't need to nap in the day.

"What for?" I asked.
"I'm going to sell some of my stones," he answered, his big eyes looking at me,waiting for my supportive answer.
Nick was fascinated by stones and had collected as many stones as he could from all over."I'm sorry, but you see now I am too busy to do that for you.Go and ask your mother for help," I said.
A short time later,Nick returned with a sign, reading"Stones. One Dollar Each".He took the sign,a small chair and four of his best stones and walked to the road in front of our garden. There he put the stones in a line and sat down on the chair, looking forward to the customers coming over.
Half an hour later, nobody passed by.I walked to him and gently asked him to go back, but he refused firmly.
Another half an hour later,a small car came down the road.I watched carefully in the distance,as Nick stood up,holding his sign up.I couldn't hear their talk but I did see the woman turned to the driver and the man reached for his pocket.
I sat in the yard,as Nick ran to me.Waving the dollar,he shouted,"you have told me if I believe in myself,I can do anything.I told you I could sell one stone for a dollar.Look!Today I made it."
