“I have no idea what to do with 1,000 tennis balls!”
My student Nick was discouraged with the assignment. I’d asked the students to imagine they were working at the U.S. Open tennis tournament. After the tournament ended, a supervisor offered them the lightly used tennis balls hit during the event by stars like Serena Williams and Roger Federer. Their job was to sell the balls for a profit.
“I had a couple of good ideas at first,” Nick said. “I could sell them as dog toys or to hospitals that could put them on the bottom of walker frames to keep them from slipping.” Then he struggled to think of more options and decided that was the best he could do.
Most people believe that good ideas come quickly or not at all—but it turns out that’s not the case. Researchers call this “the creative cliff illusion (错觉)”, the sense that we’re unlikely to get good ideas if they don’t appear the minute we start thinking.
The truth, though, is that the best ideas often come later. Your first ideas tend to reflect common wisdom, and thinking like everyone else isn’t a recipe for creativity. The solution is to persist, even though persevering feels hard. If you continue working, more interesting and original ideas will emerge.
I explained this to the class, and we spent another 10 minutes thinking together. Nick realized that he could sell the balls using two different strategies: selling a small portion for a lot of money assigned souvenirs to tennis fanatics and the rest at a discount to tennis schools serving under privileged kids.
Finally, I, together with my students drew a conclusion after discussion: don’t assume your first ideas are always your best ones but do keep brainstorming after you think you’re out of new ideas. It’s worth spending 10-15 minutes longer on a task, because the best ideas are likely just around the corner.
4. What did the teacher ask the students to do
A. Get profit by doing business. B. Think of a solution to a problem.
C. Serve as ball boys in a tournament. D. Meet with their favorite tennis stars.
5. How did the teacher feel about Nick’s first ideas
A. They would be favored by hospitals. B. They were the most creative.
C. They reflected collective intelligence. D. They required more digging.
6. What do the researchers refer to as “the creative cliff illusion”
A. Good ideas usually come later. B. The best ideas often come quickly.
C. The first ideas are always interesting. D. No one is likely to get good ideas at first.
7. What advice can help kids get the best idea according to the text
A. Keeping thinking. B. Using new strategies.
C. Consulting others. D. Discussing together.

The world’s first 3D-printed wood log hive (蜂箱) is a new project developed by the Lacrima Foundation in Edinburgh to reduce the troubling decline of honey bee populations around the world.
The Lacrima Foundation is a charity that is “committed to the conservation and protection of one of the Earth’s most important inhabitant.” The charity teamed up with beekeepers in Europe to work towards a rewilding approach that would offer bees a natural nest habitat and, in turn, create resilience (复原力) among bee communities.
Honey bees are one of the most important pollinators (授粉者), and although they may seem small and insignificant, they are vital for the production of our food — we couldn’t eat without them! However, in recent years, bee populations have been severely impacted by the growing climate emergency and our intensive agriculture practices, including the overuse of pesticides.
With help from local partners, the Foundation created 3D-printed wood log hives, which allow the bees to live in an undisturbed ecosystem where they can carry out their lives. They install these hives in high sections of tree trunks to model natural conditions for the big honey bee populations.
Vince Moucha, chairman of the Lacrima Foundation, said, “Even though there are other people and organisations working in the field of natural beekeeping, the impact, progress and scope of these projects is minimal and slow, due to limited access to resources and clear vision. I am driven by responsibility and decided to act on it due to the urgency and importance of this matter.”
The Foundation will continue to work with beekeepers in the UK, Europe, and the United States to help our bee populations survive and thrive for them and us! Check out the Lacrima Foundation, where you can see their mission and donate to the cause and even get a honey bee gift bracelet in return.
8. What is the project of the Lacrima Foundation aimed at
A. Increasing the production of human’s food.
B. Studying the cause of bees’ population loss.
C. Developing new habitats for struggling bees.
D Teaming up with beekeepers for fundraising.

A. To help bees avoid pesticides. B. To adapt bees to the new habitats.
C. To test the first 3D-printed hives. D. To protect bees from climate crisis.
10. What caused Vince Moucha to start the project
A. The progress of other projects. B. The effect of other organizations.
C. The difficult position of bees. D. The responsibility to care about people.
11. What does the author call on us to do in the last paragraph
A. Live in harmony with nature. B. Benefit from the Foundation.
C. Help bees survive with beekeepers. D. Support the work of the Foundation.

People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. Most beaches don't have ramps (坡道) or special walkways to allow disabled visitors to move around easily, or to get in and out of the sea safely. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It's called Seatrac.
Seatrac is a system that was designed to solve this problem. Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can help anyone who has a hard time walking, including older people and pregnant women.
The chair is operated by remote control. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top of the ramp. It's even possible to take a shower in the Seatrac chair after going for a swim.
Seatrac was invented and developed by Mr. Fotiou, a professor and his partners at Greek university. They designed the system and in time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell the systems. The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run.A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar powered. It doesn't require outside power, and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Latvia. The Seatrac service in Greece is gratis to tourists. The Greek government has helped pay for it and hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
12. How can a disabled man in a wheelchair get into the water through Seatrac
A. He rides the chair of the system into the sea.
B. He wheels his wheelchair into the sea by himself.
C. The moving ramp carries his wheelchair into the sea.
D. The staff of the Seatrac drives him to the sea in a chair.
13. What do we know about the Seatrac system
A. It needs recharging regularly.
B. It is automatic and portable.
C. It is easy to operate and manage.
D. It is only intended for disabled persons.
14. What does the underlined"gratis"mean in the last paragraph
A. Accessible. B. Profitable. C. First-class. D. Cost-free.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. Seatrac: Helping Wheelchair Users Enjoy the Sea
B. TOBEA:A New Company Bringing Joy to Tourists
C. A Professor: Helping the Disabled Realize Their Dream
D. A Ramp:Allowing Disabled Visitors to Move Around Easily

It's common for folks not to know anything about the people who deliver their mail, but that certainly doesn't apply to these residents in Durango, Colorado. Their mail carrier, Seana Green, makes it a point to go out of her way and chat with folks whenever possible. Although she's had this job for 15 years, she didn't start the route where Marilyn Schmidt lives until about four or five years ago.
Marilyn, who recently turned 90-year-old, is just one of the many people that Seana has befriended over the years. The two of them love to chat just about every other day. This is made easier by the fact that Seana will park her vehicle, get out, and deliver mail on foot.
Seana walks through the neighborhood, and she does more than just deliver the mail. “I think of them as family,” Seana said. “A lot of them. I really do.” There is an appreciation between the mail lady and residents. That's why, when she hadn't seen Marilyn in quite some time, she grew concerned.
“I didn't see her on Thursday, and I didn't see her on Friday,” Seana recalled. “And when I showed up on Saturday and she wasn't on the porch (门廊) and the mail was like, just hanging out of her box. and I shouted through the screen door.”
At first, Seana couldn't hear anything coming from inside the home. Soon enough though. The quiet sound of Marilyn calling out for help became clear. Seana said that her voice sounded weak almost “like a kitten meowing (喵喵叫)”.
注意;
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. B 7. A

I’d asked the students to imagine they were working at the U.S. Open tennis tournament. After the tournament ended, a supervisor offered them the lightly used tennis balls hit during the event by stars like Serena Williams and Roger Federer. Their job was to sell the balls for a profit.(我的学生尼克对这个作业感到灰心丧气。
根据第三段““I had a couple of good ideas at first,” Nick said. “I could sell them as dog toys or to hospitals that could put them on the bottom of walker frames to keep them from slipping.” Then he struggled to think of more options and decided that was the best he could do.(“一开始我有几个好主意,”尼克说。“我可以把它们当狗玩具卖给医院,医院可以把它们放在助行器框架的底部,以防它们滑倒。”然后,他挣扎着想出更多的选择,并决定这是他能做的最好的选择。)”根据第五段“The truth, though, is that the best ideas often come later. Your first ideas tend to reflect common wisdom, and thinking like everyone else isn’t a recipe for creativity. The solution is to persist, even though persevering feels hard. If you continue working, more interesting and original ideas will emerge.”(然而,事实是,最好的想法往往是后来才出现的。
根据第四段“Researchers call this “the creative cliff illusion (错觉)”, the sense that we’re unlikely to get good ideas if they don’t appear the minute we start thinking.(研究人员称之为“创造性断崖错觉”,即如果我们开始思考的那一刻没有出现好主意,我们就不太可能得到好主意。)”
根据最后一段“Finally, I, together with my students drew a conclusion after discussion: don’t assume your first ideas are always your best ones but do keep brainstorming after you think you’re out of new ideas.(最后,我和我的学生在讨论后得出了一个结论:不要认为你的第一个想法总是你最好的,但要在你认为你没有新想法的时候继续进行头脑风暴。)”可知,作者和学生们讨论得出结论:不要以为你的第一个想法总是最好的,但在你认为自己没有新的想法后, 一定要继续思考。由此推断,要帮助孩子们得到好办法,就是要鼓励他们继续思考。故选A。

9. Why does the Foundation put hives in the high trees

Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim.

How to Be a Patient Parent
Being a parent is hard work, and sometimes it’s difficult to stay patient with your children. Bad behavior on top of the normal stress of life can cause you to lose your temper sometimes. We all want to be loving parents and have our children respect us instead of fearing us. ___16___ You can use them to keep your cool and prevent doing something you will regret.
___17___ When you feel your anger start to boil over, count to ten slowly. This gives you time to calm down a bit and it will teach you to control your impulses. When you are done counting, take three deep breaths before you speak. You will feel the tension melt away with each breath.

This is much better than acting in the moment. Take the opportunity to teach them something. ___19___ Use this opportunity to help them improve themselves.
When all else fails, laugh. Life does not always have to be so serious. There are times when a battle just is not worth fighting. This is the only time we will have with our kids and it should be as fun as we can make it, because we will never get another chance to relive these years. ___20___

Good habits shape a new life
In order to help students grow healthily, our school is conducting "forming good habits" education activities.
We organized group discussions to find out our own bad habits. What shocked us was that everyone of us had so many bad habits that we didn't notice, such as throwing away rubbish here and there, skipping breakfast, eating too much junk food and so on.
These bad habits stand in our way forward. Once we realize the bad habits, it is a wise decision that we get rid of them immediately and develop good habits. Good habits can make us more productive and efficient, help us maintain physical and mental health, and increase our overall quality of life. Let's form good habits to shape a new life.

【答案】范文
Seana was so frightened that she rushed into the room. Sure enough, this sweet lady was lying in the kitchen on the floor. It turned out that she had fallen down and had been lying there for days. Seana was shocked and heart-broken. She called 911 immediately, and Marilyn was quickly taken to hospital. After urgent medical treatment, Marilyn was saved.
The doctor said that she was found and rescued just in time. Had it been a little later, the old woman would have died.
Two weeks later, Marilyn was able to celebrate her 90th birthday at the hospital. A chocolate ice cream cake and large, colorful birthday balloons were around her. Naturally, friends like Seana were there to join in on the celebration. People stood around 90-year-old Marilyn who was smiling in a hospital bed, celebrating her birthday. Marilyn said, “I am excited that Seana could be there to celebrate my birthday. She saved my life and we got to know each other better.” The scene moved her to tears.
