Over the next few days, we secretly went through all of our slides. We kept on selecting and rejecting pictures until we were satisfied. Those pictures brought back memories of the early years of our marriage and we hoped they showed how we felt about our daughter. Marilyn had them converted into photographs. Then, we placed them into an album with a birthday card explaining why her mother and I had put the album together. When the album was finally finished, we hid the book until her birthday.
On November 24, before leaving for work, I opened her door and slipped the album inside. Then I left the house and drove to work. I was about to enter the office when the telephone rang. I picked up the receiver, and on the other end of the receiver, a tiny voice spoke, “I love you, Daddy, ”she said and disconnected. The receiver remained against my ear for a few more minutes before I placed it on the telephone. Our message had been delivered and acknowledged.

Text 1 :
M: Did you know that there is a rainforest in Washington and Oregon I read about it in National Geographic. A rainforest is any forest that has a high amount of rainfall per year.
W: That’s not the only one. I went to Alaska to hike through one last year.
Text 2:
W: I have to talk to you about your schoolwork, Tom.
M: I’m sorry for handing in my homework late. I promise I’ll get my grades up.
W: I know you can improve your grades. What I’m most worried about is that you are so often sick at home and missing school.
Text 3:
M: Helen, will you pick up Johnny from the kindergarten I’m stuck in a traffic jam.
W: That’s terrible, honey. But an injured miner has just arrived here at the hospital and it seems that I will have to operate on him at once.
Text 4:
M: I thought you said you were going to Greece for your holiday. Were the flights to Florida cheaper W: No. We know a couple who have an apartment there, so we didn't have to spend any money for a hotel. And the weather there was beautiful.
Text 5:
M: I used to get the news from the daily newspaper, but now it feels like I’m wasting paper.
W: You can try to read articles online or watch news stations on TV.
M: I don’t own a TV anymore. I’ll pay for a few news sources on my phone.
Text 6:
W: I won’t go outside right now. It’s raining out there.
M: It’s just a little rain. There’s nothing to be afraid of. So what if your clothing gets a little wet It’s only a short run to the car.
W: Speak for yourself. There’s lightning and thunder. I don’t want to get hit by that and end up in hospital.
M: Well, then you get to tell Jim why we are going to be late. You’d better call him and tell him why he’ll need to wait to serve dinner.
W: OK. I’ll ring
Text 7:
W: I love this apartment. The location is perfect.
M: Yes. I like the view of the river. We must be not far from the sea.
W: I worry, though. My friend once lived near a lake and said it attracted lots of flies.
M: I don’t think that’s anything to be concerned about here. There is no lake and I haven’t seen a single fly.
W: You might be able to fish in the river.
M: Well, let’s not think about that. We need to see the rest of the apartment and decide if we can afford it.
W: I don’t think it’s too expensive, and I think it’s the right size for our family.
M: I think you’re right, and we might be able to negotiate (协商) a discount.
W: Oh, isn’t it exciting This could be our new home.
M: It sounds like you have already decided we’re having it. I think I agree with you.
Text 8:
W: Did you see the decreases for the school budget All teachers are going to get a pay reduction. M: I heard that as well. Until COVID-19 is finished, all of us teachers will have less work to do and thus less pay.
W: I still need my full salary now. I already have too much free time and not enough to do.
M: This time is difficult for everyone, but things will get better soon. I just hope the students will have enough learning material and a fast Internet connection.
W: You’re right. I’ll think positively. I’ve made educational videos recently to share with the students. What have you been working on
M: I’ve been writing a book and sharing useful websites with my students. I’ll make more videos once I get a better camera.
W: I just got a new one. Also, I’ll be able to have perfect video calls as soon as I get a new computer.
Text 9:
M: I need to study for my exams, but it’s impossible in this heat. I’ll need to go to the library later. W: This dormitory doesn’t have air-conditioning. My roommate and I are thinking about moving to another dormitory or an apartment that has air-conditioning. My parents have great air-conditioning. I sometimes wish I lived at home.
M: I’ve thought about moving, too, but an apartment will cost more, especially the electricity bills. Do you know air-conditioning today is cheaper than it was 10 years ago On the other hand, electricity is more expensive.
W: I didn’t know that. How much difference is there
M: Five years ago it was possible to run air-conditioning 24 hours a day for just $20 a month. Today the same air-conditioning unit in the same house would cost over $45 a month.
W: That’s over double in just 5 years. Well, I guess I’ll ask my roommate whether we will see about the other dormitory. If it doesn’t work out, we will sweat all summer.
Text 10:
The modern American holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908. It is on the second Sunday in May. It is a day to honor mothers. On that day mothers usually receive flowers and cards. On the cards, children often write, “Thanks, Mom”, “To the best mother in the world” and so on. Then where did the idea for the holiday come from We should thank Miss Anna Marie Jarvis. It is she who brought up the idea of having such a day. She lived in West Virginia. Anna’s mother was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Her mother died on May 9th, 1905. On the anniversary of her mother’s death, she invited some friends to an informal memorial meeting. In 1907, a church service was held on her mother’s death anniversary. Anna’s love for her mother moved other people. Besides, she wrote letters to important persons of the country suggesting a public holiday to honor all mothers. In 1914, the United States Congress agreed that the second Sunday in May should be appointed as Mother’s Day. Finally, the decision was announced by President Wilson.江阴市两所中学中学2023-2024学年高二上学期期中考试

Dan Mancina is a skateboarder whose jaw-dropping videos get hundreds of thousands of views. Mancina also happens to be blind, and videos of him using his white cane (手杖) as he skateboards have gained admiration from fans around the world.
“I’ve lost my vision slowly throughout my life,” Mancina said. It wasn't until his mid-20s that his condition—an eye disease started to affect his day-to-day life, stopping him from driving and biking. The Michigan native started skating at seven, and got into it more seriously at 13, saying the sport helps him express himself. He stopped skating for a couple of years. This period, the 35-year-old said, was his “lowest point”.
However, mobility training helped him gain confidence. Slowly, he returned to doing what he loved. Mancina started filming short videos of his progress and posting them online and met a new group of people to skate with, gaining enough confidence to return to the streets. “I was just actually trying it, and then realized I was still the same person and that I could still do all the things that I love,” he said.
Now, Mancina wants to create spaces where visually impaired (视力受损的) people can enjoy the sport. “I wanted to build the first skatepark designed for visually impaired people, so I started a foundation called 'Keep Pushing' and have been raising money ever since for a few years now,” he said. The park, set to be built in Michigan, will use adaptive methods, such as increasing the size of obstacles, to make it safe and accessible.
“To change the perception of the visually impaired, I started my social media stuff. Some people think it’s crazy for a blind people to skate. It's not that crazy in my head. I just enjoy skating. I encourage people to think that way—don’t let other people decide what you can and can't do. You know. It's all up to you,” Mancina added.
24.Which of the following best describes Mancina skateboarding
A. Time-consuming B. Breath-taking. C. Labor-saving. D. Stress-reducing.
25.What happened to Mancina before he started skateboarding again
A. His eye disease had been cured. B. He lost all interest in skateboarding.
C. His story inspired many disabled people. D. He experienced the worst moment of his life.
26.What can be learned about Mancina as he started skateboarding again
A. He went through a lot of suffering. B. He had a sense of belonging gradually.
C. He was very anxious about his performance. D. He was optimistic about the spread of the sport.
27.Why does Mancina post videos of his skateboarding online
A. To improve the image of blind people. B. To introduce the skatepark he has built
C. To persuade more people to skateboard. D. To raise money for the visually impaired.

Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is trustworthy In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer.
The researchers asked 401 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire measuring their guilt-proneness(内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player1 is given $1, which they can choose to give to Player2. Any money given to Player2 is then automatically increased to $2.50. Player2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a portion of the money to Player1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured.
Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling an obligation to act in ethical(合乎道德的)and responsible ways while interacting with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.
Then, how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they’re concerned about the effects their actions have on others.
28.What may make others feel that we are reliable according to the text
A. Our good qualities to help them out. B. Our tendency to experience guilt.
C. Our kind attitude towards them. D. Our team spirit in the game.
29. What may connect guilt with trustworthy behavior
A. A sense of responsibility. B. A feeling of disappointment.
C. The way one interacts with others. D. The ability to tell right from wrong.
30. What does the underlined word "ascertain" in the last paragraph mean
A. Ask B. Express C. Describe D. Determine
31. How is the text organized and developed
A. By providing background. B. By making a lot of comparisons.
C. By answering the raised questions. D. By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.

When drones(无人机) first became widely available around 15 years ago, it wasn’t uncommon to find tech people painting dramatic pictures of how they were soon going to change the world. However, if you look up into the largely empty sky, you can see that hasn't happened yet.
Sure, drones are useful for taking aerial (空中的) photos, but we’re a long way away from aerial superhighways, packed with autonomous drones carrying parcels at speeds that are near-impossible on the ground.
In 2016, Amazon announced it had completed its first ever aerial delivery. In a video, we saw an Amazon “Prime Air” drone pick up a parcel and fly it across the countryside landing in the buyer's garden, dropping the parcel, and then returning to its home base. But Amazon still hasn't completed its second drone delivery. In fact, it has reportedly downsized the drone program.
So, will drone delivery ever be a thing There are some indications of a possible drone delivery future not in Britain, but in Africa. Because also since 2016, rural hospitals in Rwanda have been receiving regular shipments of medical supplies by drone thanks to a company called Zipline. It surely has saved lives, thanks to the speed at which blood can be delivered in a country with a poorly developed road network. So could we ever expect such a system here
Unfortunately, there’s a big difference between rural Africa and thickly populated Britain. British homes don't have large gardens where to land and nobody wants loud large drones constantly landing around the neighborhood. Another reality is that British cities may still have security and safety concerns about routinely having drones carrying stuff over our heads.
That’s why I wonder if the real drone future could be crawling(爬) along the ground. For a few years, “autonomous delivery robots” with wheels have been walking on the pavements. So perhaps we’re not so far away from a drone delivery future, but the reality might be a little bit more down to earth.
32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. Drones are widely used in daily life. B. Drones have made delivery efficient.
C. Drones are designed to take aerial photos. D. Drones haven't changed the world as expected.
33. Why does the author mention Zipline’s drone delivery
A. To explain the process of drone delivery. B. To stress the benefits brought by drone delivery.
C. To discuss the possibility of a drone delivery future. D. To show its advantages over Amazon’s drone delivery.
34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The security and safety concerns about drones.
B. The ways that British people react to drone delivery.
C. The differences between African countries and Britain.
D. The reasons why drone delivery isn’t suitable for Britain.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Pie in the Sky B. Drone Application at Risk
C. Robots on the Road D. Aerial Delivery in Progress
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5 分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The Science of Risk-Seeking
Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. 36 Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 37 As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.
So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. 38
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 39 To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
40 For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A. It all depends on your character.
B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.

It was a lazy Sunday morning, the type of day that getting out of bed requires an effort. When Marilyn and I entered the kitchen, Lori was already at the table doing her homework. Seeing us coming, she, suddenly, stood and faced me, “Why are there more pictures of Lisa than there are of me ” she asked. Lisa is our older daughter.
I stared back, not understanding the question. Lori turned and left the room. Caught off-guard by the question, I looked at Marilyn. “Are there more pictures of Lisa than of Lori ” Marilyn shrugged and raised her eyebrows in a motion of puzzlement. “Are you aware that there are more pictures of Lisa than Lori ” I added.
Marilyn said, “I’ve never counted them. I don’t know.”
Marilyn’s answer was the same as my thoughts, “I hadn’t realized that there was any significant difference. Now why would Lori ask such a question ” I asked.
Marilyn just shook her head and stared back at me. After a few minutes of thought she said, “When Lisa was born, you were taking photographs. You hardly went anywhere without a camera. When Lori was born, you were involved in colored slides (幻灯片). There must be hundreds of slides of Lori somewhere in the house that Lori has never seen or doesn’t remember.”
After digesting Marilyn’s remarks, I agreed. “After Lori leaves, we’ll look for those slides. Who knows, we may find more slides of Lori than pictures of Lisa,” I joked.
Later that afternoon, when we were alone, we went into the basement where we had stored the boxes that we had brought from our previous home. It wasn’t long before we discovered the trays of slides, and for the rest of the afternoon we looked at each tray, pointing out those slides that highlighted Lori.
“What are you going to do ” Marilyn asked.
“It’s her birthday in a few weeks,” I said, “We’ll select about one hundred slides with Lori and convert them into pictures, put them into an album and give to her as a gift. I don’t know if the album will answer her question, but at least she’ll know that we care enough to find her an answer.”
