If you ever find yourself facing a fire, you will try to hide yourself because you will feel frightened.
But this is the worst thing to do!You must get away and get out of the fire situation as quickly as
possible. Otherwise you might be harmed by breathing in smoke. You could even be burned. If you
know basic fire escape facts, you can better protect yourself.
If you see or smell fire or smoke, always warn other people about the danger by shouting “Fire!”
or pulling a fire alarm. You aren?t the only one who will need to escape! Then cover your mouth and
nose with a towel or a piece of clothing. Even better is a wet cloth, such as a towel that was just used.
This will help keep you from breathing in dangerous smoke.
If you are caught in a fire, stay low to the ground, because smoke and heat rise toward the ceiling.
The lower you are to the ground, the better you will be able to breathe. If you find yourself behind a
closed door, never quickly open it. You should carefully touch the door to check if it is hot. If the door
is not hot,it is safe to open it. If the door is hot, however,it means the fire is on the other side. Do
not open the door. You should escape a burning building by going downstairs. During a fire you must
never take a lift,as it?s hard for you to escape.
There are a few other things that you remember not to do if you are ever in a fire. One is not to stop
to take your personal belongings. They are worth nothing compared to your health and life. Don?t even
stop to call the fire department. Just get outside to safety, then make the call. You should also never go
back into a burning building once you are in a safe place. You will only put yourself back in danger.
Finally,if you are ever physically on fire, there are three steps to follow:stop, drop, and roll.
This means that you stop where you are, drop to the ground, and roll around on the floor to put out the

“It?s next Wednesday,”the father replied. “They?ll be twelve years old.”

I?ll always remember the first time I went to a concert. My friend Jerry was a year older than I and

he had been to a few concerts. His mother worked in the box office (售票处)of Light on Hall and
Jerry knew he could persuade her to get us tickets for my favorite group,Rocking Hard, who were
coming the following Saturday.
My parents weren?t too pleased about the idea of my going to the concert—they said at fifteen I was
too young, but promises of working hard at school and keeping my bedroom tidy finally won them over
and they agreed I could go.
Over the next week I kept my promise—my homework was done the minute I got home and my
bedroom was so clean and tidy that it shone. As we got nearer to the big night of the concert,I was
getting more and more excited. On Thursday,Jerry and I went shopping to find some “cool”clothes to
wear to the concert. By Friday,we were at boiling point. We were so excited that we could hardly
sleep or eat. All our friends at school envied (羡慕)us because they couldn?t come with us to see
Rocking Hard. That night,I went to bed thinking about only one thing—the concert the next day.
On Saturday morning, while I was walking through the park with my dog,I suddenly saw Shane,
the singer from Rocking Hard. Just at this moment,my dog ran up to Shane who laughed and turned
around to see who the dog belonged to. Then we began to chat with each other. I told him that my friend
and I were going to his concert that evening and Shane gave me a card inviting me and Jerry to a
backstage (后台)party after the concert.

Football is,I suppose, the most popular game in England:one has only to go to one of the
important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old,one can see them all there, shouting and
cheering for one side or the other.
One of the most surprising things about football in England to a stranger is the great knowledge of the
game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the
important teams,he has the photos of them and he knows the results of large numbers of matches. He
will tell you, with a great air of authority, who he expects will win such a match, and his opinion is
usually as valuable as that of men three or four times his age.
Most schools in England take football seriously—much more seriously than nearly all the other
European schools, where lessons are all—important and games are left for private arrangements. In
England,it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy?s mind with facts in a
classroom. Education also means character training, and one of the best ways of training character is by
means of games, especially team games, where the boy has to learn to work with others for his team
instead of working selfishly (自私地) for himself alone. The school therefore arranges games and
matches for its pupils. Popular, healthful and cheap, football is a good team game which needs skills
and a quick mind. As a result,it is the school?s favorite game in winter.
( )66. According to the author, football in England is .
A. expensive B. dangerous C. attractive D. difficult
( )67. It is surprising that even the smallest boy in England .
A. knows which team win B. knows a lot about football
C. is an authority of football D. is a good football player
( )68. Most schools in other European countries pay more attention to .
A. team games B. outdoor activities
C. character training D. classroom teaching
( )69. Most schools in England train their pupils? character by .
A. providing more equipment
B. giving them more knowledge of football
C. organizing games and matches
D. inviting football stars to the school
( )70. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Popular Games in England B. Team Games in England
C. Football in England D. Sports in England

Many people think, “If I had more money,I?d be happy!”But is this true?Dan Gilbert,a
professor from Harvard University, has been researching this issue, and his conclusions are very
interesting. Gilbert found that if a person?s basic needs are met,the happiness he or she gets from
having more money is really very small.
Gilbert?s first reason is based on a personality trait (性格特征) that we all share:an ability to
change in different environments. For example,if a person moved to a hot country,he or she would
feel very hot at first, but in time, the heat would feel normal. In the same way, when a person has
2014年广东省高等职业院校招收中等职业学校毕业生考试·英语试卷 共8页 第 7页
more money,he or she can buy exciting new things and is happy. In time, the person sees these things
as normal, not exciting, but the memory of excitement remains. The person tries to buy new things to
create that feeling again.
Having more money suddenly also causes stress. After a person buys an expensive car,new
clothes,or a big house,he or she worries about keeping it. There are always more things to worry
about. For most people who didn?t always have money, there is a fear of losing it or being unable to
keep expensive things. These people aren?t able to enjoy the things if they think too much of the worry or
the loss. Many people also feel that others want what they have, and this causes more stress.
So,the next time someone says,“I?d be happy if I had more money”you will know the truth!
