National Smile Month is the largest and longest mouth health activity in the UK. Starting in 1977,it is

The British are known for their bad teeth because they have too many sugary(甜的) foods and drinks. It
seems that most of them don’t often show their feelings. They neither smile nor cry.But this is NOT true. The
British like to smile as much as anyone else. They just don’t want to show their bad teeth.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day, cut down sugary foods and drinks, and visit the dentist often. With
the three messages, the organizers(组织者)hope that a month of smiling will make people all around the UK
realize the importance of good teeth and be confident enough to open their mouths to smile.
One interesting activity is for the British to enjoy the fun photos with short stories behind. Seeing the
smiling faces and reading the interesting stories, everyone can’t help smiling! You’re welcome to send yours
with big smiles online.
Smiling is not only good for you but also good for those around you, even if you do have a few bad

As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him
for a lifetime.”This is the way the charity organization Heifer International (国际小母牛慈善组织)wants to
end world hunger.
It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried
to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what
they needed was“not a cup, but a cow”.
Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He
believed giving animals and providing training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International
was set up.
On Heifer International’s website, you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish
and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies.
With more and more animals, these families will be able to support themselves. Once these families get better
lives, they will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources(资源) for
programs run by Heifer International to help more families.
The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal’s first female(雄
性) baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals health and feeding. And
these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule.
However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they
can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on working together,
helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.

D. Heifer Intermational provides training on animals' health and feeding.

Time spent with friends in childhood is associated with physical health in adulthood, according to data
from a multi-decade study of men. The findings show that boys who spent more time with friends as children
tended to have lower blood pressure and lower Body Mass Index (体重指数) as men in their early 30s. “These
findings suggest that our early social lives may have a small protective influence on our physical health in
adulthood, and that it’s not just our caregivers or financial circumstances(经济环境), but also our friends
that may be health protectors, ” says psychological scientist Jenny Cundiff.
“Although this wasn’t an experiment, it was a well-controlled longitudinal (纵观的) study with a racially
diverse sample. It provides a strong clue that being socially integrated early in life is good for our health
independent of a number of other factors such as personality and weight in childhood,” professor Karen
Matthews of the University of Pittsburgh explains.
In many previous studies, researchers found an association between adults’ social well-being and health-
related outcomes. Cundiff wondered whether this association might be evident much earlier in life, in
childhood and adolescence (青春期).
To find out, Cundiff turned her attention to the longitudinal Pittsburgh Youth Study. Specifically, she
looked into the information and facts about 267 individuals in Pittsburgh public schools. The participants’
parents reported how much time their children spent with their friends during an average week, beginning
when the boys were about 6 years old and continuing through age 16. Analyses revealed that boys who spent
more time with their friends in childhood and adolescence had healthier blood pressure and BMI at 32. This
association held even after Cundiff accounted for other potential influences, including physical health in
childhood and social integration in adulthood.
The study included only one measure of social integration and did not include specific measures of
physiological processes or organic function. Cundiff notes that expanding the range of measures used in future
research could help to clarify the pathways linking early peer (同龄人) relationships with physical health
decades later.
32.What conclusion does Jenny Cundiff draw from the study
A.Boys tend to spend more time with friends in childhood.
B.Boys are generally more protective as a member of society.
C.Childhood friendships may have health benefits in adulthood.
D.Childhood experiences make a difference to one’s personality.
33.How does Karen Matthews like the findings
A.Doubtful. B.Inspiring. C.Experimental. D.Reasonable.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The field and focus of the study. B.The course and result of the study.
C.The organizer and subject of the study. D.The purpose and significance of the study.

C.Lacking multi-dimensional evaluation. D.Not expanding the range of early peer relationships.

Tips for Green Travel with Kids
Travelling doesn't mean letting go of all the eco-friendly choices we work so hard to achieve in our daily life.
Here are a few tips for green travel with kids.
Booking nonstop flights whenever possible will reduce carbon emissions(碳排放).If the closest local airport

waste and the plastic can be harmful to your health.
39 In addition, opening a few windows and turning off the air conditioner(空调)are also good ways to
save energy. You should also help your children keep their good, green habits while travelling. Sometimes vacation
can mean more than one shower each day-once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool. Pay attention
to the number of showers(淋浴)and the length of showers. 40
A. Walking is good for your health.
B. Try to cut back to save water and energy.
C. But you can pack healthy food from home.
D. Travelling is a great chance to introduce your kids to the world.
E. Reusable water bottles are easy to bring along wherever you travel.

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder
sister, chasing(追逐)the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We
were so happy that we didn't notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the
rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder
and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped(滑)and fell into
the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock
into the sea, too.
“Help! Help!” We cried. I could feel my body tingling (刺痛)as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back
to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough
water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea.
My sister, although using all her strength, wasn't able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart from me
by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.
