Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go-kart(卡丁车)to enter for the Go-Go Race. So she asked her dad for help.
“Well,” he said. “How about this: you do some research first and then come back to me with a design.”
A week later, Sally brought her notes and drawings to Dad. She named her go-kart “Blue Lightning”. Dad looked over her work, thinking. “Well, that’s interesting,” he said. “Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you’ve designed.”
Over three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go-kart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. Sally agreed.
After she did that, Sally drove back to Dad. “Well,” she said. “Now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive.”
“Oh, do you ” he said. “Please share.”
“When I drove fast, there was a lot of pushback,” she said. “I think it’s because of the lightning bolt (闪电)shape.”
“Very good!” Dad said.
“So, why didn’t you tell me about that problem in the first place ” Sally asked.
Dad laughed. “Where’s the fun in that If you give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime. ”
Sally said, “I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun!”
Dad smiled. “Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. We learn how to do something right by doing it a few times first and making mistakes along the way. ”
That encouraged Sally and she worked even harder. When she showed Dad her new go-kart, he nodded with pride.
Finally came the race. Sally wasn’t worried about whether she would win—in her mind, she had already won, by building something better than ever before.

Leeks are so common that you have probably never thought much about them. They grow easily in our gardens and don’t look very special, but that doesn’t mean they are not interesting! Leeks belong to the Allium family of vegetables, which also includes onions. Like onions and other members of the Allium family, leeks are a kind of vegetable with white soft parts and leafy green tops. The bulb, however, is not round, but just slightly larger than the stem nearest the roots. The more rounded the bulb, the older the leek. Leeks are usually about 30cm long, but they can grow much bigger. Do you know growing leeks can win you a prize Some gardeners grow big leeks and hold competitions to find the biggest type of leek. The heaviest leek ever weighed more than 8 kg.
People have been eating leeks for thousands of years. The Ancient Roman Emperor Nero ordered his cooks to serve him leeks every day, as he believed they would improve his singing voice! People in Wales loved the leek so much that they made it their national symbol. As the story goes, about 400 years ago, Welsh soldiers were fighting in a war. They put leeks in their hats so that they could tell their friends from their enemies.
Leeks are especially loved by cooks all over the world, as they give flavor to lots of dishes. Leeks taste a bit like onions, but their flavor is much weaker. They taste especially good in soups. In France a leek and potato soup is eaten cold. Leeks go well with meat.
So now we know that leeks are delicious, but are they good for you Yes! Leeks are full of iron. Experts now believe that eating leeks and other members of the Allium family can also help people keep their blood pressure under control and their hearts healthy.

Jacob was a driver sent to pick me up for a three hour drive. I needed to go to Mexico. As we were driving, he started to tell me his story. He shared that since the pandemic (疫情) he had to change jobs. He was spending six days a week in a town with more work, away from his family.
He said the name of his hometown “Nah Bok”. On his only day off, he rode three different buses for five hours there and back, so he could have time with his family.
My father worked away when I was young, sometimes for weeks or months at a time. I remember us kids waiting our turns to have just a couple of minutes on the phone with him.
After two hours into our drive, when I saw a sign saying Nah Bok, I asked him if that was where his family lived. He said, “Yes, it is about 5 kilometers down the road.”
I said, “Why don’t we stop and say hello ” He looked at me like I was crazy or joking. He clearly didn’t want to get in any trouble. He was hesitant (犹豫的). He asked if I was sure. I absolutely (绝对地) was.
As we pulled over, his wife was chatting on the side of the road with her mother. They were excited to see him. All of their children came out and I got to hear a little bit about each of their lives.

Facial-recognition cameras are everywhere-even in your smart phone. Many people use this technology to unlock their phones, open doors, or make quick payments. But there is a problem during the epidemic (疫情): everyone wears masks. What a headache!
Scientists are trying to solve this problem. For example, Engineering and Technology (E&T) magazine reports that Hanwang, a tech company in Beijing, has made a new system. It can recognize (辨认) 95% of people when they wear masks.
What’s the secret It’s all about your eyes. Marios Savvides from Camegie Mellon University studies facial-recognition. As we get older, he says, our faces change shape. But the area around our eyes doesn’t. It stays the same—even if we put on weight. As long as there are enough data from the area of our eyes, the cameras can recognize us.
Tech5 is another facial-recognition company. The Swiss company’s products scan (扫描) the shape of your face. They also scan your iris, which is the colored part of your eyes. Tech5 hopes to ignore (忽略) all of the face below the nose.
This kind of software is more important than just unlocking your phone. “It can discover criminals, even when they wear masks,” said Huang Lei from Hanwang. Hanwang’s technology is used by Chinese police in places like subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force.
Huang pointed out one big weakness: it fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost,” Lei said to E&T.
