Purpose of the Wolfpacket
The Wolfpacket aims to inform students of current and relevant events and issues. Some items are published only to entertain but will follow the guidelines of the editorial policy. Since the Wolfpacket staff meets regularly, publication of the newspaper serves to educate both readers and staff members. The staff tries to be accurate and responsible, and follows some regulations as defined by the Society of Professional Journalists.

French author Annie Ernaux, who has mined her own biography to explore life in France since the 1940s, was awarded this year's Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday for work that lights up cloudy corners of memory, family and society.
Ernaux’s autobiographical books explore deeply personal experiences and feelings - love, sex, abortion, shame -within a changing web of social and class relationships. Much of her material came out of her experiences being raised in a working-class family in the Normandy region of northwest France.
Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel literature committee, said Ernaux is “an extremely honest writer who is not afraid to confront the hard truths.”
“She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her abortion, her jealousy, her experiences as an abandoned lover and so on. I mean, really hard experiences,” he said after the award announcement in Stockholm. “And she gives words for these experiences that are very simple and striking. They are short books, but they are really moving.”
Ernaux is just the 17th woman among the 119 Nobel literature laureates (文学奖得主) and is the first French literature laureate since Patrick Modiano in 2014. As one of France's most well-received authors and a prominent feminist voice, she expressed surprise at the award, asking a Swedish journalist who reached her by phone: “Are you sure ”
“I was working this morning and the phone has been ringing all the time but I haven't answered,” she told the TT news agency.
Olsson said Ernaux had used the term “an ethnologist of herself” rather than a writer of fiction. Her more than 20 books, most of them are very short, chronicle events in her life and the lives of those around her. They present uncompromising portraits of sexual encounters, abortion, illness and the deaths of her parents.
In the book that made her name, “La Place” (A Man's Place), published in 1983 and about her relationship with her father, she writes: “No lyrical reminiscences, no triumphant displays of irony. This neutral writing style comes to me naturally.”
4. Where would this passage most probably appear
A. An autobiography. B. A news website.
C. A text book. D. A biography.
5. According to the passage, why was Ernaux awarded Nobel Prize in literature
A. Because her work is short and really moving.
B. Because she is gifted in neutral writing style.
C. Because her work uncovers some cloudy social aspects.
D. Because she is one of the most well-received authors.
6. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph but one mean
A. Ernaux lives a hard life. B. Ernaux doesn’t write fiction.
C. Ernaux only writes her own life. D. Ernaux mostly records realistic events.
7. Which of the following best describes Ernaux
A. Pioneering and strong-minded. B. Honest and self-centered.
C. Sympathetic and talented. D. Optimistic and good-tempered.
C
A Japanese company recently released a white crust (吐司皮) milk bread that it hopes will stop the habit of removing the crust when making sandwiches.
Did you know that the vast majority of milk bread sandwiches made daily in Japan have their crusts removed Although crusted sandwich lovers do exist, the general idea is that the fluffy (蓬松的), white part of Japanese bread is tastier than the brown crust. This concept dates back to a time long ago when the crust was harder to chew (咀嚼) through, but things are definitely a lot different today. The crust is nice and soft, but people still seem to prefer crustless sandwiches. That results in a lot of food waste, but one company hopes to change that with a new white crust bread.
Tokyo Chef Sugimoto and his team at the Imperial Hotel Co., Ltd. spent six months developing a new type of bread that eliminates the need to get rid of the crust. People have been coming up with all sorts of ways to recycle bread crusts in order to control food waste, but Sugimoto’s idea was to create a crust that didn’t have to be thrown away in the first place.
Although Imperial Hotel did not fully reveal the secret behind its new white crust bread, it did mention that it is baked slowly at a lower temperature than regular bread, which results in a white color all through the bread and a more moist texture (材质).
Imperial Hotel used to serve crustless milk bread sandwiches to its customers, but starting on October 1st of this year, they will switch to this new white crust bread, thus decreasing its food waste considerably.
The white crust bread will be served in the Imperial Hotel’s restaurants and at banquets, but people will also be able to purchase it from a luxury bakery that has been operating since 1971.
8 What makes people always prefer crustless sandwiches
A. Changed taste. B. Nice colors. C. Soft texture. D. Fixed habits.
9. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Enlarge. B. Satisfy. C. Erase. D. Ignore.
10. What can we learn from the text
A. The white part is tastier but harder to chew. B. Chef Sugimoto is the first one to recycle crusts.
C. The regular bread asks for a higher temperature. D. The Hotel will serve crustless sandwiches after October.
11. Why did the Imperial Hotel promote the white crust bread
A. To satisfy customers’ needs. B. To deal with the bread waste.
C. To develop a new type of bread. D. To provide a new option for luxury bakeries.
D
Hurricane season is here. Fiona ruined Puerto Rico, and less than two weeks later, Ian struck the west coast of Florida and its remnants(残余部分) moved up and hit the Eastern Seaboard.
Extreme weather events like Ian and Fiona have become more intense because of climate change. That reality has implications for those of us in health care. We have a duty to protect and advance the health of our patients.
We typically think of health as something doctors monitor, offering treatment such as prescription medications as needed. But in reality, only about 20% of a person's health is attributable to the medical care they receive. Social determinants such as people's neighborhood and socioeconomic status are actually responsible for 40% of a person's health outcomes. It's a sad truth that a ZIP code can be more predictive of a person's health than his or her genetic code.
Consider how extreme weather events such as this summer's heat waves affected communities unequally. Poor urban neighborhoods, with sparse tree cover but plenty of concrete and asphalt, absorb and retain the heat of the sun's rays, while leafy, shaded countrysides just a few miles away stay much cooler. A University of California–San Diego study that measured land surface temperatures in over 1,000 counties across the United States found that neighborhoods with the lowest average education and income levels generally recorded higher temperatures.
Extreme weather events such as flood can threaten people's physical and mental health long after it recedes. Almost 1 in 3 people in the flooded area were estimated to have suffered from certain post-traumatic stress disorder. Therefore, physicians in regions at increased risk of natural disasters may need to be ready to deliver more mental health care. For example, doctors in drought-stricken areas may need to make water safety a part of their conversations with patients, because groundwater sources can become unsafe to drink without sufficient rainfall.
Climate change has posed an immediate and dire health threat. Now is the time for health care providers to take collective action to adapt to this unfortunate reality.
12. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. ZIP code largely tells a person’s health outcomes.
B. A person’s genetic code is determined by ZIP code.
C. A person’s genetic code is less important than ZIP code.
D. ZIP code is most responsible for people’s health outcomes.
13. Why did the author mention poor urban neighborhoods
A. To show that people with the lowest education have the lowest income.
B. To show that poor people tend to be more exposed to extreme weather.
C. To show that shaded countrysides stay much cooler than urban areas.
D. To show that poor people live in a less-environment-friendly community.
14. How many kinds of extreme weather are mentioned in the passage
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
15 What is the tone of the passage
A. Objective. B. Urgent C. Optimistic. D. Worried.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Recess for Kids
Ask a group of kids about their favorite part of the school day and many will talk about something that happened at recess. Maybe they finally made it across the monkey bars (单杠). Maybe somebody kicked the ball over the fence. Maybe a fruit tree in a neighboring yard started to drop apples on the playground. ___16___
It’s true not just according to kids, but also to adults who study recess for kids. Whether they’re inventing a new game or sitting under a tree, kids need a break — or several of them — during the school day.
Why Kids Need Recess.
There's no debate that recess, or mainly referred to as physical activity, is good for kids.
You can’t have your brains go hours at a time and retain and store information in working memory. ___17___ Besides, activity that involves arms and legs — running, climbing, crawling — builds new neural connections, which helps kids regulate their emotions. Studies show that after recess children are more attentive in class, perform better and have fewer emotional problems.
How Much Recess Should Kids Get.
“Ideally, children should get four 15-minute recesses every day”, says Debbie Rhea, a professor from Texas Christian University, who advocates for outdoor play in schools. ___18___ It is noted that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recently expanded the idea to encourage recess for all students, including those in middle and high school.
___19___
In addition to simply providing enough time for recess, schools should teach skills that will make recess more successful. For instance, letting kids run fast will help them develop coordination. ___20___. And even falling, is something kids need to practice to avoid getting badly hurt. To allow children to take reasonable risks with their bodies is also a wise move.
A. How to Make Recess Better.
B. Who should help kids recess.
C. You need time away to process it.
D. This recommendation has been widely accepted.
E. Any one of these things is a marker of a good recess.
F. Maybe running up the slide is not as unsafe as it looks.
G. We wouldn’t have kids sitting there for math or reading for long hours.

In the middle of the chaos. a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
As he looked at the pile of debris (废墟) that once was the school, tears began to fill his eyes. After the initial sadness and shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stone.
As he was digging, other parents arrived, clapping hands to their chests, saying, “My son!” “My daughter!” Other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying, “It’s too late!” “They’re dead! ”“You’re just going to make things worse!”
To each parent he answered with one line “Are you going to help me now ” And then he kept digging for his son, stone by stone.
The fire chief (消防队长) showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s debris, saying, “Fires are breaking out. Explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home. “This loving, caring American father asked, “Are you going to help me now ”
The police came and said “You’re angry, mad and it’s over. You put others in danger. Go home. We’ll handle it!” He replied, “Are you going to help me now ” No one helped. Courageously he dug alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead ”

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A

8. What makes people always prefer crustless sandwiches
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B

【导语】本文为说明文,主要讲述了帝国酒店将要采用白面包皮的原因。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“This concept dates back to a time long ago when the crust was harder to chew (咀嚼) through, but things are definitely a lot different today. The crust is nice and soft, but people still seem to prefer crustless sandwiches(这个概念可以追溯到很久以前,当时吐司皮很难咀嚼,但今天的情况肯定大不相同。吐司皮很好很软,但人们似乎还是喜欢无壳三明治)”可知,虽然吐司皮比以前更软,但人们还坚持以前的想法,更倾向于无壳三明治。由此推知,人们更喜欢无壳三明治是因为固定的习惯。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段中“People have been coming up with all sorts of ways to recycle bread crusts in order to control food waste, but Sugimoto’s idea was to create a crust that didn’t have to be thrown away in the first place(人们已经想出了各种各样的方法来回收面包皮,以控制食物浪费,但Sugimoto的想法是创造一种从一开始就不必扔掉的面包皮)”可知,Sugimoto的想法是创造一种不需要去掉面包皮的新型面包。由此可知,划线词坐在句子意为“东京帝国酒店的主厨Sugimoto和他的团队花了六个月的时间开发了一种无需去皮的新型面包”,即eliminates意为“去除”,故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Although Imperial Hotel did not fully reveal the secret behind its new white crust bread, it did mention that it is baked slowly at a lower temperature than regular bread, which results in a white color all through the bread and a more moist texture(虽然帝国酒店没有完全揭示其新的白面包皮背后的秘密,但它确实提到了它在比普通面包低的温度下缓慢烘焙,这导致整个面包呈白色,质地更加湿润)”可知,普通面包需要的温度高,故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“starting on October 1st of this year, they will switch to this new white crust bread, thus decreasing its food waste considerably(从今年10月1日开始,他们将改用这种新的白面包,从而大大减少食物浪费)”可知,改用白面包皮的目的是要减少食物浪费,故选B项。
A ZIP code largely tells a person’s health outcomes.
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
15. What is the tone of the passage
A. Objective. B. Urgent C. Optimistic. D. Worried.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. B

【答案】16. E 17. C 18. D 19. A 20. F

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了孩子的课间休息活动。
【16题详解】
根据空前“Maybe they finally made it across the monkey bars (单杠). Maybe somebody kicked the ball over the fence. Maybe a fruit tree in a neighboring yard started to drop apples on the playground.(也许他们终于跨过了单杠。也许有人把球踢过了栅栏。也许邻居家院子里的一棵果树开始把苹果掉到操场上)”可知,作者先是列举了孩子们的课间休息方式,空格处位于段尾,应该是对空前内容的总结,E选项“Any one of these things is a marker of a good recess.(这些事情中的任何一件都是一个良好休息的标志)”对上文进行了总结,承接上文,符合语境,故选E。
【17题详解】
空前说“You can’t have your brains go hours at a time and retain and store information in working memory.(你不可能让你的大脑一次运转几个小时,并在工作记忆中保留和存储信息)”,空格处应该说你需要时间来慢慢处理信息,C选项“You need time away to process it.(你需要时间去处理它)”说明了你需要时间来处理信息,其中的it指代前面的information,“You need time away”和前面的“You can’t have your brains go hours at a time”相对应,因此C选项承接上文,符合语境,故选C。
【18题详解】
空前说““Ideally, children should get four 15-minute recesses every day”, says Debbie Rhea, a professor from Texas Christian University, who advocates for outdoor play in schools.(“理想情况下,孩子们每天应该有四次15分钟的休息时间,”德克萨斯州基督教大学的教授Debbie Rhea说,她倡导在学校进行户外活动)”,空后说“It is noted that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recently expanded the idea to encourage recess for all students, including those in middle and high school.(值得注意的是,疾病控制和预防中心最近扩大了这一想法,鼓励所有学生休息,包括初中生和高中生)”,空格处应该说空前的建议是被人广为接受的,D选项“This recommendation has been widely accepted.(这一建议已被广泛接受)”说明了这个建议被人广为接受,其中的This recommendation指代空前的建议,“has been widely accepted”和空后的“expanded the idea”相对应,因此D选项承上启下,符合语境,故选D。
【19题详解】
空格处是本段小标题,由空后的“In addition to simply providing enough time for recess, schools should teach skills that will make recess more successful. For instance, letting kids run fast will help them develop coordination.(除了简单地提供足够的课间休息时间,学校还应该教授让课间休息更成功的技巧。例如,让孩子们跑得快有助于他们发展协调能力)”可知,本段主要讲的是提升课间休息的方式,A选项“How to Make Recess Better.(如何让休息变得更好)”概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题,故选A。
【20题详解】
空后说“And even falling, is something kids need to practice to avoid getting badly hurt. To allow children to take reasonable risks with their bodies is also a wise move.(甚至摔倒也是孩子们需要练习的,以避免严重受伤。允许孩子们用自己的身体承担合理的风险也是明智之举)”,空格处应该说到某种有风险的学生的活动,F选项“Maybe running up the slide is not as unsafe as it looks.(也许滑滑梯并不像看上去那么不安全)”说明滑滑梯也是有风险的,和后文“risks with their bodies”相对应,因此F选项引起下文,符合语境,故选F。
