Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
4. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2
A. Your weight changes little during a day.
B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
5. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months
A. You will weigh more.
B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body fat will increase.
D. Your body composition will change.
6. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds.
C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
7. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Why Do We Gain Weight
B. How to Work Out Effectively
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain
B 5. D 6. C 7. D
根据第二段第一句““A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says.(他说:“一个人的体表质量是肌肉、脂肪、骨头、血液,甚至是我们肺中携带的空气的组合。”)”
根据第三段的“When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease.(当你开始通过锻炼来改变你的身体组成——通过增加更多的肌肉量和减少体脂——你的体重可能会增加,而体脂率可能会降低。)”
根据倒数第二段“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight(水大约占一个人体重的65%到90%)”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.(你是否一直在锻炼,饮食也很健康,但当你站在秤上时,秤上显示你胖了几磅?“这很正常,这并不意味着你的锻炼没有效果,”佛罗里达州迈阿密海滩的运动生理学家Jeffrey A. Dolgan说。)”和第二段的“Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.(在例行锻炼后,身体各个部位的质量百分比会立即发生15%的变化。所以,如果你在锻炼和健康饮食的同时体重增加,这可能不是你想的那种类型的体重增加。)”可知,文章主要分析了坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后体重不降反增的原因。D项“Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain (为什么我锻炼后体重反而增加了?)”
C
A project in Britain is trying to deal with the loneliness of the old by asking young people to work as volunteers to help the old.
Lorna Burnett was paired with 15-year-old Ailsa, a schoolgirl, through the Reading Friends project. Lorna used to read two to three books every week when she was a librarian. In her 40s, she developed a serious eye disease and her vision became worse and worse. Finally, she was unable to read or watch television for any length of time without her eyes hurting.
Not only have Lorna’s reading periods with Ailsa helped to reconnect her with her love for literature, they have also built a strong intergenerational friendship. “I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,” Lorna said.
Since the Reading Agency started the program in 2017, they have introduced tens of Reading Friends periods across Northem Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.
According to the organisation’s website, “Loneliness is an important health and wellbeing problem for older people. Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others. Fact also shows that reading has a good influence on cognitive functions (认知能力) and wellbeing and can reduce the risk of dementia (痴呆).”
Ruth Sheppard from Bannock bum High School is responsible for connecting schoolchildren like Ailsa with the program and she says that it has had an amazing influence on the young people. “We have wonderful young people at our school and we want to get them into the community,” Sheppard said. “It has been fantastic to see them become more confident as well as improving their reading ability and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lorna that they are making friendships with, and all the library workers also help them.”
8. What does the underlined word “vision” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. View. B. Sight. C. Strength. D. Confidence.
9. How does Ailsa help Lorna
A. By reading books to her.
B. By looking after her carefully.
C. By collecting good books for her.
D. By helping her with her library work,
10. Why does the author use the words on the Reading Agency’s website
A. To explain the bad influence of loneliness.
B. To introduce the health condition of the old.
C. To show the necessity of running the program.
D. To encourage young people to join the program.
11. What can we learn from Ruth Sheppard’s words
A. The program is also good for the students.
B. The program needs more students like Ailsa.
C. The program has won the support of communities.
D. The program is highly thought of by many students.
B 9. A 10. C 11. B
根据前文“In her 40s, she developed a serious eye disease(40多岁时,她患上了严重的眼病)”提到了Lorna Burnett在40多岁时患上了严重的眼部疾病,画线词所在句的“and”表达并列顺承关系,由此可推知“her vision became worse and worse”应是表达“她的视力越来越差”含义。
根据文章第三段内容“‘I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,’ Lorna said.(“我选一本书,她会过来读给我听,”Lorna说。)” 故选A项。
分析第四段内容“Loneliness is an important health and wellbeing problem for older people. Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others. Fact also shows that reading has a good influence on cognitive functions and wellbeing and can reduce the risk of dementia.(孤独对老年人来说是一个重要的健康和幸福问题。
根据文章末尾段Sheppard的话“‘We have wonderful young people at our school and we want to get them into the community,’ Sheppard said. (Sheppard说:“我们学校有很多优秀的年轻人,我们想让他们融入社区。”)”可知,她提出想让更多的优秀年轻人融入社区,并在后文“It has been fantastic to see them become more confident as well as improving their reading ability and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lorna that they are making friendships with, and all the library workers also help them.(看到他们变得更加自信,阅读能力和社交技巧也有所提高,真是太棒了。他们会见了像Lorna这样的社区成员,并与他们建立了友谊,所有的图书馆工作人员也会帮助他们。)”讲到了该项目带给年轻人的好处,从而进一步暗示了希望更多的人加入这个项目。因此,通过她的话可推测,这个项目需要更多像Ailsa这样的年轻人的加入。故选B项。
D
How good are you at maths Some people love the challenge of algebra (代数) or enjoy working out number puzzles. Maths is all around us, from working out how to share the bill after a meal, to calculating your family bills. But many are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this maths anxiety is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 — and 16 — year — olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried that maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, a professor from Boston University, believes that giving students, particularly girls, good role models is critical, especially at a young age. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women who love maths, to teach younger children.
Writing for the BBC, David Robson says, “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s no room for playing tricks might make you more worried about underperforming.” And once we assume that we’re not a maths person, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that voicing your fears can loosen their control over you. They also suggest encouraging children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Most importantly, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
12. What is the author’s understanding of maths anxiety in paragraph 1
A. It happens when you have to pay bills after a meal.
B. It actually reflects one’s poor performance in maths.
C. Only students often suffer from this sense of worry.
D. People normally have it when dealing with numbers
13. What may cause students’ maths anxiety according to the research
A. The particular feature of maths.
B. The fear of failure in maths tests.
C. Students’ dislike of learning maths.
D. Maths teachers’ lack of confidence.
14. What can we infer from David Robson’s words
A. Geography seldom causes worry.
B. Slow students have maths anxiety.
C. Dishonesty is difficult in maths tests.
D. Maths students like number puzzles.
15. What is the best way to get over maths anxiety
A. Speaking out your fears in public.
B. Employing female maths teachers.
C. Having a positive attitude to maths.
D. Viewing maths tests as a challenge.
D 13. D 14. C 15. C

根据第一段的“But many are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this maths anxiety is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone.”(但许多人害怕面对数字,感到真正的担忧和困惑。
根据第二段的“Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected.”(研究发现,如果数学老师在教这门科目的时候感到焦虑,那么这种焦虑感是会带给小学生的,而且女孩更可能会受到这种影响。)
根据第三段中David Robson所说的“But the fact that there’s no room for playing tricks might make you more worried about underperforming.”(但没有机会让你耍花招会让你更加担心考试考得不如意。)

Dancing is fun, creative and can affect the way you think and feel. Whether you are a star dancer or find it hard to feel the beat, moving with music can be great for both your body and your mind. ___16___
Why do you dance If you love dancing with your friends or jumping around to music on your own you'll know that dancing makes you feel good ___17___ Now it's still a big part of traditions and celebrations around the world. Dancing is also a great way to let loose and have fun—even babies like to dance to music.
___18___ Whether you are into ballet, hip hop, jazz, or just love to freestyle, dancing is good for you in lots of ways. As well as being a great way to exercise, dancing produces feel- good chemicals in your brain, such as endorphins(内啡肽)and dopamine(多巴胺), which make you feel energized and less stressed. It also tunes into your emotions, helping you to express yourself and release your pressure. ___19___ That is why Mike Pickets from Raver Tots Company prefers to organize festivals that bring families together to enjoy the music.
What should you do If you don't feel confident dancing in front of other people, try practicing some moves on your own first, like trying a free online dance class. Before you start, stretch to warm up your muscles, which helps maintain the flexibility and strength so that you don't get any injuries. ___20___ Make sure you repeat anything that you struggle with over and over again. Finally, share your energy with others if dancing makes you feel good.
A. How is dancing good for you
B. After that, keep practicing your moves.
C. How does dancing change your lifestyle
D. After that, remember to control your breathing.
E. The following may guide you into the dancing world if you still hesitate.
F. Thus dancing can bring you more happiness than any other social activities.
G. Humans have used dance to make bonds with each other for thousands of years.
E 17. G 18. A 19. F 20. B
上文“Dancing is fun, creative and can affect the way you think and feel. Whether you are a star dancer or find it hard to feel the beat, moving with music can be great for both your body and your mind.( 跳舞很有趣,很有创意,还能影响你思考和感受的方式。不管你是明星舞者还是感觉不到节拍,跟着音乐移动对你的身体和大脑都有好处。)”说明跳舞对身心都有益,下文从三个方面进行了分析,此处设空需要承上启下,选项E中的“The following”引出下文,因此推断E项“如果你还在犹豫,下面的内容可能会引导你进入舞蹈的世界。”符合语境,故选E。
【17题详解】
由下文的“still”可知,本空与后文“Now it's still a big part of traditions and celebrations around the world(现在,它仍然是世界各地的传统和庆祝活动的重要组成部分)”构成顺承关系,选项G中“for many years”和“now”时间上构成先后顺序,因此推断G项“几千年来,人类一直用舞蹈来彼此建立联系。”
本段的解题关键句为“dancing is good for you in lots of ways(跳舞在很多方面对你有好处)”,剩下的内容“As well as being a great way to exercise, dancing produces feel- good chemicals in your brain, such as endorphins(内啡肽)and dopamine(多巴胺), which make you feel energized and less stressed. It also tunes into your emotions, helping you to express yourself and release your pressure. (跳舞不仅是一种很好的锻炼方式,还能在你的大脑中产生让你感觉良好的化学物质,比如内啡肽和多巴胺,它们让你感到精力充沛,压力减轻。它还能调节你的情绪,帮助你表达自己,释放压力。)”都是对此句进行解释说明,再结合每段分段落开头都是疑问句,因此推断A项“跳舞对你有什么好处呢?”符合语境。故选A。
根据下文“That is why Mike Pickets from Raver Tots Company prefers to organize festivals that bring families together to enjoy the music.( 那就是Raver Tots Company的Mike Pickets更喜欢组织家庭聚会来欣赏音乐的原因。)”
B、D项中“After that”与前句“Before you start”和后面的“Finally”呼应,这里是中间步骤,且观察到“Before you start”后面是祈使句,选项B、D与句式结构一致,根据下文“Make sure you repeat anything that you struggle with over and over again.( 确保你一遍又一遍地重复那些你努力做的事情。)”

The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.
At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar ” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard it and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling them that his uncle had bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds.
C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
7 Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Why Do We Gain Weight
B. How to Work Out Effectively
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain

13. What may cause students’ maths anxiety according to the research
A. The particular feature of maths.
B. The fear of failure in maths tests.
C. Students’ dislike of learning maths.

Honesty Won’t Let You Down
Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school, so he had no friends yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school.
