Four of the World’s Natural Disasters
The following four natural disasters destroyed cities and communities around the world. By flood, typhoon, or earthquake, these events have collectively taken millions of human lives.
Yangtze River Flood
The major flood of 1931 covered tens of thousands of square miles, flooding rice fields and many cities, including Nanjing and Wuhan. The flood affected more than 50 million people. Government organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimated (估计) that about 3.7 million people died in this disaster.
Typhoon Nina
Typhoon Nina struck Henan province of China in August 1975. The typhoon caused a serious dam (水坝) failure, and more than 150,000 people were dead or injured. According to reports, at least 26,000 people died in the floods. About 145,000 people died from diseases caused by water pollution and famine (饥荒). The number of people affected by the disaster was more than 10,000,000.
Kashmir Earthquake
On October 8, 2005, a disastrous earthquake struck the Kashmir region. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.6, followed by many aftershocks, landslides, and falling rocks. In Kashmir at least 79,000 people were killed, and more than 32,000 buildings broke down.
Haitian Earthquake
At the beginning of 2010, an earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.0 and was followed by aftershocks that registered magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.5. Another aftershock of magnitude 5.9 struck on January 20. One summer night in a seaside house, I was asleep. Suddenly, I felt myself lifted from bed and carried in my father’s arms out on to the beach. Overhead the stars were shining. “Watch!” As my father spoke, one of the stars flashed across the sky. And before the wonder of this could disappear, another star flashed, then another … “What is it ” I asked. “Falling stars. They come every year on a certain night in August. I thought you would like to see the show,” said my father.
Many years have passed, but I still remember that night, because I was the lucky seven-year-old boy whose father believed that a new experience was more important for a small boy than an unbroken night’s sleep.
Once my father gave me Zuleika Dobson, Max Beerbohm’s classic story of undergraduate life at Oxford. I liked it, and told him so. “Why don’t you think about going there yourself ” he said. A few years later, with luck and a scholarship (奖学金), I did. My father had the gift of opening doors for his children, of leading them into areas of newness.
Children are naturally curious and love to try new things. But someone must offer them the choices. Years ago, when the Quiz Kids were surprising American radio audiences with their brilliance (才华), a writer set out to discover what common characters there were in the backgrounds of these children. He found that some were from poor families, some from rich, some had been to super good schools, and some had not. But in every case there was at least one parent who shared something that the child was interested in, who gave encouragement and praise for achievement, who made a game of searching out the answers to questions.
The most valuable thing parents can pass on to the next generation is not money or house, but a capacity (能力) for wonder and gratitude (感激), a sense of aliveness and joy.
24、What does the author do in the first two paragraphs
A. He shows how his father educated him.

25、What does the author think of his father
A. He loves to try new things.
B. He is good at guiding him.
C. He does so much for the family.
D. He has a rich knowledge of literature.
26、What does the author mainly try to show through a writer’s discovery
A. Excellent children have some similar characters.
B. Smart children have their own way of learning.
C. Parents’ personality can affect their children greatly.
D. Parents of excellent kids have something in common.
27、What could be a suitable title for the text
A. Parents are good teachers for their kids
B. Childhood experiences can change one’s life
C. Children can learn new skills from daily life
D. Parents’ encouragement is important for a child
With new advances in AI and autonomous (自动的) driverless cars and trains, it makes sense that buses will become autonomous too. Now a full-sized autonomous bus service is up and running in Scotland.
The buses began running in May, 2023, and are carrying passengers between Ferrytoll Park and the Edinburgh Park. This 14-mile route (行车路线) is the first of its kind in the UK. The autonomous buses are being operated by Stagecoach, the largest coach operator in the UK. While the buses are autonomous, fully self-driving vehicles (交通工具) are not allowed in the UK now so a driver will have to be onboard at all times. The vehicles are required to have a safety driver to monitor the technology and a bus captain that will help passengers board and buy tickets. The driver can take control in case of an emergency situation.
It took almost 10 years of research and development and 1.8 million kilometers of practice runs to reach this stage, which is considered the first full-sized use of autonomous buses in Europe.
This project aims to speed up the application of self-driving technology. The government hopes that the autonomous buses will be more dependable, and more secure to use than traditional buses since 88 percent of road accidents are caused by drivers’ errors.
Other countries in Europe are exploring using driverless buses. There have already been short tests in several cities in Italy, Finland and France, and there are plans for driverless electric minibuses to be introduced in Switzerland, Germany and Norway. An autonomous bus may be just around the corner in a city near you.
28、What do we know about the autonomous bus
A. It is very popular with passengers.
B. It can only hold very few passengers.
C. There are two fixed workers on the bus.
D. It allows passengers to enjoy beautiful views.
29、Which can describe the use of the autonomous buses in Europe
A. Expensive. B. Pioneering. C. Fair. D. Challenging.
30、What do the underlined words “more secure” in the last but one paragraph mean
A. Safer. B. Faster.
C. More modern. D. More comfortable.
31、Why does the author mention some other European countries
A. To show they are also interested in driverless buses.
B. To show they have advanced self-driving technology.
C. To show people in these countries like driverless buses.
D. To show buses are popular transport in these countries.
Scientists in Europe have discovered that magpies (喜鹊) and crows (乌鸦) are using an unusual material to build their nests (巢) — spikes (防鸟钉) designed to keep birds away from buildings. The birds appear to be taking away the spikes from buildings and adding them to their own nests.
Auke-Florian Hiemstra is a Dutch scientist who studies how wild animals use materials made by humans. He has seen nests that include some pretty unusual materials — things like plastic flowers, sunglasses and even fishing lines. Mr Hiemstra thinks that in large cities, it’s hard to find suitable materials to make nests, so birds build nests with whatever materials they can find.
Someone at a hospital in Antwerp, Belgium sent Mr Hiemstra a picture of a magpie nest. He never expected spikes could be used by magpies to build their nests. The top of the nest had thin spikes sticking out all over. The spikes were “anti-bird spikes”. They are usually placed on buildings to prevent birds from landing. But this time, the birds had used the spikes to make a nest.
Magpies and crows are known for being clever. The two kinds of birds are related, and are famous for being able to solve challenging problems. But the birds didn’t use the spikes in exactly the same ways. The crows used the spikes on the inside of their nests to help make the nests stronger. Magpies have to worry about other birds, including crows, stealing their eggs. They appeared to use the spikes like humans do-putting them on top of their nests to keep other birds from landing.
Mr Hiemstra said, “We learned about several other nests in Europe that also used anti-bird spikes. What’s more, there are probably more nests out there that are built with anti-bird spikes. They just haven’t been found yet.”
32、Why do birds use unusual materials according to Mr Hiemstra
A. They make their nests unique. B. They provide better protection.
C. They can be found easily. D. They are much stronger.
33、How did Mr Hiemstra feel when seeing the picture
A. Worried. B. Surprised. C. Satisfied. D. Confused.
34、What is the purpose of paragraph 4
A. To introduce the right ways to use spikes.
B. To show magpies are much cleverer than crows.
C. To explain crows and magpies can learn from humans.
D. To tell us crows and magpies use spikes in different ways.
35、What do Mr Hiemstra’s words in the last paragraph show
A. Birds in Europe first started to use anti-bird spikes to build nests.
B. Humans need to learn more about birds’ way of building nests.
C. It’s more difficult for birds to find suitable building materials.
D. Anti-bird spikes may be used more widely to build nests.

Residents of Lawton have been worried, and many have called the police station to report it. The police arrived at the lake, but they didn’t know what happened to the water. At first, they thought of chemical pollution, but they quickly realized there was no such possibility. Researchers from the Coastal and Marine Science Center have been looking into the issue. So far, they think the color might have to do with a large number of fish that have recently appeared in the lake. Researchers have caught a few of the fish and they will be taking them to a lab for testing. Emergency workers are asking people to stay away from the lake, especially not to swim or fish in the water. We will be back tomorrow with more updated information. This is the KMLC News. Now, over to Brittany Johnson with the weather report, followed by sports.
