I have always loved music. When I was a teenager, I dreamed of becoming a rock star. Sadly,
my effort didn't match my love, and soon the guitar my mother bought for me lay quietly in the
corner. I hated pressing my fingers down on the hard strings. At one time, my guitar teacher
shook his head and said I had the rhythm(韵律) of a duck.
Before 2020, I had always believed that I was unable to learn a musical instrument. Then
came the lockdown(封控) of 2020. I had to stay in a hotel in Chiang Mai in Thailand with my
friend's guitar. Being locked in the hotel, I had nothing to do but pick up the guitar.
I focused on how to play five of my favorite songs on the guitar. I started slowly, learning
how to play by following online classes. I have to agree that counting time(节拍 ) was very
difficult for me, so I gave it up. I just listened to the songs, focused on their rhythms and tried my
best to follow them.
Day by day, I started to sound less and less terrible. I practiced the five songs every morning
until I found my own rhythm and developed my own style of the songs, even after the lockdown
in Chiang Mai was over. Finally, on May 28, 2022, I gave a guitar performance to some strangers
and friends. I was so nervous that I forgot to turn the microphone on at the beginning. But when I
hit the first chord(和弦 ), my music was greeted with loud cheers. It was my best memory of
2022.
In short, my word of this past year or the past three years is FOCUS.Time passes by quickly.
Another new year has now arrived. Why not set yourself a clear goal (based on your love) and
focus on it Never let anyone tell you what you are not good at. By focusing on your goal, you
will be able to surprise everyone.

We have four chickens: Peanut, Cookie, Ice-cream and Potato. My husband Andrew made a
beautiful coop(笼子) for them together with our kids.
He gave some tools to the kids because he believed it was important
that they could really make something. Then, he slowly helped them. The
kids made the mistakes of learning – a board cut too short and hands cut by
knives – but in the end, Andrew did some tricks and the coop looked
perfect.
The chickens love their perfectly imperfect home and we like to let them run around the yard
freely. Yesterday, we needed to go to the city center, knowing that the chickens won’t go very far.
When we got back, my son, Gordon, ran to check on them. There were Peanut, Cookie and Potato,
looking a mess. Ice-cream was nowhere to be seen.
We searched around the yard and found lots of feathers(羽毛). By this time, Gordon’s eyes
got watery. Ice-cream was his favorite chicken.
Andrew picked Gordon up and held him in his arms. As we stood there,
accepting that we were now a three-chicken family, we heard it – a soft clucking
sound. Andrew put Gordon down and they looked under the bush. There was
Ice-cream, a half-naked(半裸的) chicken. She looked strange, but she was totally
fine. Andrew carefully picked her up and returned her to the coop.
The next day, Andrew had a meeting with the kids. The kids believed that
the chickens should stay in the coop, safe from everything that may hurt them. Andrew disagreed.
He believed that we should be more careful, letting the chickens out when we were in the yard. He
encourages our kids to take risks. He sees that the risk of living life – by having the freedom to
walk around the yard – is better than the safety of a coop.
38. Which chicken was found under the bush

1 Reading and writing doesn't come naturally to people. Although it takes some effort(努力 ).
eighty-six percent of the world's population have learned how to read and write, and the number
has been increasing for centuries. Literacy(读写能力) makes it possible for us to navigate(航行于)
the world filled with books, websites, text messages, road signs, and more. But the world of
information is changing. Why send a long letter or text when you can share photos or videos
instead Why learn from a book when you can learn from a video Why read magazines when you
can listen to podcasts(播客)
② Could people join today's world without the abilities of reading or writing ________ Most of
our devices(设备) now talk to us and take spoken orders. Smart cars ask for where you go and
then give directions. Smart virtual assistants(智能虚拟助手),like Siri, listen for requèsts to report
the weather, play a song, set a timer and much more. Some apps can also read text aloud or turn
speech into text. These devices aren't perfect -the apps still make silly mistakes. But they're getting
better and better. So in the future, it's possible that all of our communication with our devices and
each other is spoken.
③ But reading and writing are powerful tools. For one, most people read faster than they speak. A
podcaster speaks at around 150 to 160 words each minute, while a strong reader can look through
a text at 300 to 400 words each minute. That's twice as fast! Research has also found that when
people read, they can remember more information and stay more interested than when they listen.
Learning to read also creates new connections in the brain. With the invention of reading, our
brain has been changed which developed the ways we were able to think, which changed the
intellectual evolution(智力进化 of humans. Would we really choose to give up that progress
④ What do you think Do you hope people keep on reading and writing, or will technology mak
literacy useless

七、任务型阅读 (本题有 5小题,每小题 1分,共计 5分)
阅读下面一则关于“垃圾分类”的指南,补全学校学生会的倡议书。
Garbage sorting is a big project worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been
working hard on it. People are asked to sort garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable (可回收的),
harmful and dry.
Wet waste is things you don’t want but that pigs can eat.
Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.
Harmful waste includes things like medicine and batteries.
H 九年级英语试题卷 第 8页(共 10 页)
{#{QQABIQQQogAoAAIAABhCAQVqCgEQkBECCCoGhEAEMAAAQBFABAA=}#}
Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go into the “dry waste” bin.
If you don’t sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) . These landfills
will take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The
electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other
pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things.
Dear students,
What do you do with the garbage If all the garbage is put into one bin and go to a landfill, it
will not only waste land but also 81 the soil and groundwater. Garbage 82 can
solve the problems. We can sort our garbage into 83 bins: the used batteries should be
thrown into the “ 84 ” bin ; The metal parts of the broken pens should be grouped into the
“recyclable” bin; When we have some leftover food, we should throw them into the “ 85 ”
bin; The other waste will go into the “dry waste” bin. In a word, let’s take action!
Sincerely,
