Four Women Who Made Scientific History
Katherine Johnson (1918-2020)
Katherine Johnson was a Black mathematician and one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist. As a mathematician, she calculated and analyzed the flight paths of NASA spacecraft. She is best known for making the calculations that allowed the first Americans to enter Earth’s orbit and set foot on the moon. The 2016 movie “Hidden Figures” records Johnson’s life and work at NASA.
Sally Ride (1951-2012)
Sally Ride was important in creating career and educational opportunities for women and girls in science and mathematics. As an astronaut, she became the first American woman in space in 1983. On NASA’s second and third Space Shuttle missions, her job was to work the robotic arm, which she used to put satellites into space. After she stopped working for NASA, she founded NASA’s EarthKAM project, which provided students the opportunity to take pictures of the Earth and then study them. In 2003, she was added to the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Ada Lovelace (1815-1852)
Ada Lovelace is regarded as the world’s first computer programmer. She helped develop the idea for a computing machine, and — long before computers were even invented — invented an algorithm (算法) for a computer. To honor her contributions, the U.S. Department of Defense named a new computer language “Ada” in the 1980s.
Mae Jemison (1956- )
Mae Jemison is a doctor, engineer, and former NASA astronaut. In 1992, she became the first Black woman to travel into space. Jemison excels in many scientific fields, has authored several books, and even appeared on an episode (一集) of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. She was included in the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame. Currently, she leads the 100 Year Starship project through the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. This project is devoted to ensuring that human travel to another star is possible in the next 100 years.

When Kevin Day was a child, he could hardly speak due to a speech impediment (口吃). Yet he was extraordinarily fluent in the language of music. Kevin says, “Music was sort of my way of self-expression when I couldn’t communicate what I felt with words.”
Now in his mid-20s, Mr. Day is breaking racial and age barriers in classical music. His work has already been performed at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts, the Rachmaninov Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. To reach these peaks, the young black composer has had to overcome tough challenges.
“He is driven, but he is so uplifted and comforted by music that I don’t think it’s a choice for him,” says Cynthia Johnston Turner, dean of the music faculty at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. During her previous post at the University of Georgia, she selected Mr. Day for a master’s program. “He has a lot of resilience (复原力) but let’s not ignore the fact that the systems are piled up against him.”
Mr. Day’s work is influenced by life experiences as much as by musical notes. When he was around 10 years old, his family’s struggles deepened. Both his parents were unable to find a job. Sometimes there was no electricity or water in the house. In the end, the family lost their house and car. “I don’t make a big deal out of this stuff,” Mr. Day notes. “I’m always looking forward and try not to look back, not even for reflection.”
To date, Mr. Day’s 200-plus pieces of music include works for concert bands and symphony orchestras. He’s eager to branch out into contemporary music, including hip-hop and jazz. He is also earning his doctorate. “I have this sort of spirit of resilience that I’ve kind of inherited from my parents,” says Mr. Day. It’s given him a sense of urgency to create music that bolsters listeners going through difficult times. “My goal is to try to help others as well.”
24. Which aspect of Mr. Day does paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A. His career challenges. B. His career goals.
C. His music styles. D. His music achievements.
25. What can be learned about Mr. Day from Cynthia Johnston Turner’s words
A. He likes writing uplifting music. B. He received support from society.
C. He has a deep connection to music. D. He changed universities on her advice.
26. How does Mr. Day feel about his childhood experiences
A. They are his source of inspiration. B. They are already in the past.
C. They aren’t unique to him. D. They aren’t easy to forget.
27. Which of the following best explains “bolsters” underlined in the last paragraph
A. Attracts. B. Entertains. C. Reminds. D. Supports.

When someone sets out to improve their health, they usually take a familiar path: starting a healthy diet, adopting a new workout plan, getting better sleep, or drinking more water. Each of these behaviors is important, of course, but they all focus on physical health — and a growing body of research suggests that social health is just as, if not more, important to overall well-being.
A recent study found that the strength of a person’s social circle — as measured by cell phone activity — was a better predictor of self-reported stress, happiness and well-being levels than fitness tracker data on physical activity, heart rate and sleep. That finding suggests that the “quantified self” presented by endless amounts of health data doesn’t tell the whole story, says study co-author Nitesh Chawla.
“There’s a qualified self, which is who I am, what my activities, my social network, my lifestyle, and my enjoyment are. All of these aspects are not reflected in any of these measurements,” Chawla says. “And they are strong determinants of my well-being.”
A 2019 study set out to determine what’s driving those high rates of loneliness and found that social media, when used so much that it occupied face-to-face quality time, was tied to greater loneliness. Gender and income didn’t seem to have a strong effect, but loneliness tended to decrease with age, perhaps because of the wisdom and perspective afforded by years of life lived, says Dr. Stuart Lustig, one of the report’s authors.
Lustig emphasizes that we should use technology “to seek out meaningful connections and people that you are able to keep in your social sphere (范围). It’s easy enough to find groups such as Meetups, which regularly organize offline gatherings, providing members with opportunities to interact, share, and participate in various activities in real life. Or through social media, you can find places to go where you’ll find folks doing what you want to do.” That advice is particularly important for young people, he says, for whom heavy social media use is common.
Finally, Lustig stresses that even small social changes can have a large impact. Striking up post-meeting conversations with co-workers, or even engaging in micro-interactions with strangers, can make your social life feel more rewarding.
28. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1
A. To show social health is ignored by some people.
B. To show social people like to do workouts with others.
C. To prove many people tend to follow suit to improve their health.
D. To prove more and more people have benefited from physical exercise.
29. What do we learn about fitness tracker data according to paragraph 2
A. They are out of date.
B. They are not scientific.
C. They can help realize the “qualified self”.
D. They cannot reflect one’s overall health.
30. What did the 2019 study find
A. Females feel happy more easily than males.
B. Old people felt lonelier than young people.
C. The overuse of social media could lead to loneliness.
D. Income had a great influence on people’s well-being.
31. What advice does Dr. Stuart Lustig give
A. Avoiding talking to strangers.
B. Using social media as little as possible.
C. Using technology for meaningful face-to-face interactions.
D. Spending more time with like-minded young people.

It’s thought that the first ever Chinese restaurant opened in 1908 in the UK. This establishment was located in Piccadilly Circus, London. Although this was a massive breakthrough for the cuisine, it didn’t pick up popularity for years.
Back in the 1950’s the idea of Chinese food in the UK and America was simplistic; tinned Chinese curries (咖喱菜肴), processed foods and confused flavours, like Chinese food on pizza. Takeout restaurants were few and far between and other cuisines with less experimental flavours were favoured by Western palates (味蕾).
It wasn’t until the 1960’s and 1970’s that Chinese food began getting the recognition it deserved. More citizens began arriving on Western soil from China and Chinatown started development in the 1970s, when chefs began talking about exotic (异国的) flavours. One essential figure during this period was Kenneth Lo. He wrote more than 30 books on Chinese cooking from the 1950’s to the 1990’s, with over one million copies sold in Britain.
Lo also opened a cooking school in London during the 1980’s, which was hailed as (被誉为) Europe’s first Chinese cooking school. Alongside this, people began opening up to the idea of varied flavours but dishes had to make the most of the ingredients available in the West. Chinese chefs began to adapt dishes to use readily available ingredients and also appeal more to Western palates. This ended with the creation of dishes that a Western audience perceives as Chinese that you wouldn’t even find in China. For example, Chop Suey used to be one of the most popular dishes found in the West but you wouldn’t be able to find this dish with ease in China. The same goes for the beloved fortune cookies.
Nowadays, more frequent travel of British people to China for business or leisure has exposed consumers to more varieties and both authentic (正宗的) and modern Chinese flavours. No longer do those living in the West fear complex, unfamiliar and unaccustomed flavours; instead they accept the contrast and try to include them into their diet.
32. What happened to Chinese food after the first Chinese restaurant opened in London
A. It went through great changes.
B. It went unnoticed for a long time.
C. It was mainly sold as takeout food.
D. It started to have a big share of the local market.
33. What did Kenneth Lo do to promote Chinese food
A. He wrote many books on Chinese cooking.
B. He worked in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.
C. He commented on popular books on Chinese food.
D. He travelled across China to learn Chinese cooking.
34. Why are Chop Suey and fortune cookies mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To prove many ingredients were needed to make them.
B. To show they were the most popular Chinese dishes in London.
C. To show Chinese dishes were adapted to satisfy Westerners’ taste.
D. To prove the ingredients used in Western cuisine preparation were simple.
35. What is the Westerners attitude towards Chinese food nowadays
A. Concerned. B. Regretful. C. Unclear. D. Receptive.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Agatha was in the library, reading the Girl Detective series, when she noticed something strange. Her best friends, Timmy and Florence, were talking to each other in whispers while keeping a good, safe distance from her! When she waved at them, they looked away.
Things only got stranger in art class. Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table from Agatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn’t looking.
Now, Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all, she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass (放大镜) abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence’s table and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing This was definitely a mystery that needed solving!
After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on, but they kept smiling at her in a slightly strange way. Of course, Agatha could have asked them what they were up to, and they might have told her — but she wouldn’t have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school, Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha and her mum. Agatha saw them go into the bookshop. Strange, again. Florence didn’t read much — no matter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school, Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play with her after school, but they said they couldn’t because they were busy. Even more mysterious…
When Agatha’s mum came to pick her up after school, she was so lost in the unsolved mystery that she hardly noticed her busy father was coming along. which was unusual. When they arrived home, her father said she could go into the living room.

Visiting historic sites is enjoying increasing popularity nowadays.
Many believe that paying visits to historic sites not only provides people with opportunities to relax and enjoy scenery, but also helps enlarge knowledge and broaden horizons. More importantly, historic sites, as carriers of culture and witnesses to history, provide good platforms where visitors can get exposed to national history and culture in depth, which in turn helps boost national confidence and pride.
Among numerous historic sites, I personally recommend Classical Gardens of Suzhou, noted for their artistic styles of architecture, of which the Humble Administrator’s Garden is the most typical.
读续:
Opening the door of the living room. Agatha heard voices shout from darkness, “SURPRISE!” Before she could make clear what had happened, several tiny flames emerged against two familiar faces. It was Timmy and Florence, one holding a cake and the other singing “Happy Birthday”. So absorbed in solving the mysteries was Agatha that she forgot her birthday. Surrounded with the smiling faces and sweet songs, Agatha temporarily let go of the mysteries that had been lingering in her mind for several days. Candles blown out and lights turned on, the three friends started to share the sweetest ever cake.
After eating the cake, Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents. To her amazement, every present was exactly what she had been longing for — a series of detective storybooks, a brand new magnifying glass, among other things. In a flash, all the mysteries seemed to make sense. Right then, Timmy and Florence handed her a card, which was nicely hand drawn in her favorite red and pink. In the middle of the card, written in elegant handwriting was a sincere compliment as well as a hearty wish. “To Detective Agatha the greatest, you deserve every bit of what your name carries. Happy birthday.”

M: A lady injured her head and leg when going down the mountain and we were asked to help out. By chance, I was enjoying an early run nearby. So I found her quickly, provided shelter and did some basic first aid. She was then handed over to my colleague and taken to hospital.
W: How does your team raise money to operate
M: Well, we organize Big Black Mountains Hike every week. And that’s our biggest source of income. Sometimes we give various performances and make presentations to local schools.
W: Listeners, join their fundraising events to make a donation! Now, we’ll take a quick commercial break. We’ll be right back.

(Text 10)W
Today I’d like to tell you about this year’s competition for the best video. Last year’s topic was the environment and many of you said that it didn’t give you much opportunity to show people in your videos. So, this time we’d like you to think about those who are disabled. For example, if every entrance to our school had wheelchair access, that would make a big difference, wouldn’t it Today is the seventh of June, so you have just over three weeks to get your videos ready. You must hand in your videos by the thirtieth. Now, it’s really important to remember that your videos must not be longer than 25 seconds. Anything above this length won’t be accepted. There are some great prizes. For the winner, there’s a computer, and then the second prize is a mobile phone. Also, the winning videos will be shown at a charity event in London. And all the winners are invited to watch a wheelchair basketball match. Finally, the top ten videos will be shown at the opening ceremony of the school festival. Good luck!
