When Schauna Austin was 20 years old, she lost her husband in a car crash. Unable to raise a baby alone, she made a difficult decision during pregnancy — to place her baby for adoption. She gave birth to a child she named Riley, and held him for 72 hours straight. “It was perfect,” Austin said, holding her new baby. “I knew I would have him for a short time, so I made every minute count. I didn’t sleep for three days until the time came to let him go.”
Her Riley became another family’s Steven. Like most closed adoptions, a firewall went up between Austin and Steven’s new parents — no communication whatsoever. But that only lasted about a week. Adoptive mother Jennifer Schoebinger and her husband, Chris Schoebinger, said they had no interest in excluding the birth mother. “You know, you can’t have too many people loving you, right Why couldn’t he be both of ours ” Chris Schoebinger said.
So, year after year, they sent Austin piles of pictures and bound books detailing Steven’s every major and minor milestones. The Schoebingers said they did this so that when Austin and their son were ready, they could pick up right where they left off. The two reunited when Steven was 7 years old. Austin taught him how to fish, and they have kept in contact ever since. Austin felt blessed beyond words, and Steven felt he got the best of both worlds.
Steven is now 26, married, and with a baby boy of his own. Much to the delight of Austin, he named the child Riley. “I think the lesson we learned is that sometimes we create barriers where barriers don’t need to be. And when we pull down those barriers, we really find love on the other side,” Chris Schorbinger said.
That love on the other side has continued to grow. The families spend Thanksgiving as one, and will of course be getting together again in the days ahead.
24. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean
A. The less people love you, the better.
B. There are too many people who care about you.
C. Being loved by many people is desirable.
D. It’s a burden to be cared about by too many people.
25. What was Austin’s attitude towards reuniting with her son
A. Tolerant. B. Grateful. C. Uneasy. D. Angry.
26. What can we learn about the Schoebingers from the passage
A. They did not give birth to any children.
B. They contacted Austin as soon as they took Steven in.
C. They felt blessed beyond words when Austin taught Steven how to fish.
D. They believed it better to get the biological mother involved.
27. What does the author want to convey most through the passage
A. Biological parents are crucial to a child’s growth.
B. People create barriers where barriers don’t need to be.
C. Adoptive parents and biological parents should raise children together.
D. Love is found when we pull down unnecessary barriers.
C
We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel(柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done
The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue ——a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an electric vehicle into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC, “The big leap forward will come with solid-state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars. “These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.
These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita(人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.
28. What can we infer from the question at the end of Paragraph 1
A. It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.
B. Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.
C. We should not be too optimistic about the future.
D. It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.
29. What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in Paragraph 2
A. permission B. encouragement C. admission D. insistence
30. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text
A. Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.
B. Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”.
C. There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.
D. Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.
31. What is the most suitable title for the text
A. Electric Power or Petrol: A Tough Decision to Make
B. Electric Vehicles: A Road to a Greener Future
C. Total Electric Traffic: A Long Way to Go
D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: A Main Source of Gases
D
In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Some animals such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.
Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. The Cory’s shearwater is an oceangoing seabird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys. And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics equally unlikely.
Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement”, and until now it has been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals’ movements.
But a team of researchers has done that by attaching small geolocators to more than 150 of the birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled longer distances for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds. “We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement’ for migratory birds,” says Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults——but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course.
“Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.”
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. It describes animals’ habitats. B. It compares different species.
C. It talks about migration models. D. It introduces a tracking technology.
33. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The opening for learning and practice.
B. The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters.
C. The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements.
D. The way Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns.
34. What does Letizia’s study find about the younger Cory’s shearwaters
A. They travel as much as adult birds. B. They lower the speed for exploration.
C. They move in a predictable manner. D. They look for a course with their parents.
35. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. Exploration refinement contributes to birds’ adaptability.
B. Man-made changes make migration easier.
C. Animals make a safer journey via a fixed track.
D. A combination of strategies assures migration success

【原文】Good evening, everyone. Welcome to enter our college. I’m Professor Smith. I’d appreciate that I can have this opportunity to be here and share with you my childhood dream — to be a successful professor in a famous university. I hope all of you can realize your dreams by learning in our college in the following four years.
I grew up in a two-bedroom house with my parents and six brothers and sisters. We had to walk to the river near our home to get water to drink, wash and bathe. We had to use candles at night to save on the electricity bill. We didn’t live a rich life then, but all my siblings are now professionals in their careers. We knew our parents could not pay for college, so we all studied hard to get scholarships. Also, while we were in college, we got part-time jobs.
Dear students, I know there are times in your life that you may feel like giving up your dreams. But whenever that happens, remember the reason for starting. Changes do not happen overnight. It takes determination to get results. Therefore, keep your goals in mind and never stop trying to achieve them. There might be roadblocks along the way which may affect your determination. As soon as you overcome those challenges, the process will seem much easy.

A. They did not give birth to any children.
B. They contacted Austin as soon as they took Steven in.
C. They felt blessed beyond words when Austin taught Steven how to fish.
D. They believed it better to get the biological mother involved.
27. What does the author want to convey most through the passage

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. C

They found that younger birds traveled longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要说明了如何在社区大学交到朋友。
【36题详解】
上文“Making friends in community college is a bit trickier than in four-year schools in some cases. Students don’t typically dorm at community colleges, so there isn’t always a shared living environment.(在某些情况下,在社区大学交朋友比在四年制大学要棘手一些。学生通常不住在社区大学,所以并不总是有一个共享的生活环境。)”提出在社区大学难交到朋友,下文“Here’s a look at how to make friends at a community college.(下面我们来看看如何在社区大学交朋友。)”却在讲在社区大学难交朋友的方法,上下文有转折关系。D项“However, that doesn’t mean opportunities aren’t available(然而,这并不意味着没有机会)”承上启下,引出下文。故选D项。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Previously, you may have only had opportunities to socialize with other students in your classes.(以前,你可能只有机会与班上的其他学生交往。)”讲在没有做兼职前,你的圈子就是你班上的同学。C项“You may start to see some new faces at your job though.(但是你可能会开始在工作中看到一些新面孔。)”说明在兼职的时候会遇到新面孔,解释了“Get hired on campus”的原因,上下文语意一致。故选C项。
【38题详解】
根据小标题“Attend events(参加活动)”和下文“Whether it’s special lectures, career fairs, musical performances, or anything else, these occasions bring students together outside of the classroom.(无论是特别讲座、招聘会、音乐表演,还是其他什么,这些场合都能让学生们在课堂之外聚在一起。)”可知,本段主要说明大学各种课内外活动对于社交的影响。F项“Community colleges do hold a variety of activities throughout the year(社区大学全年都有各种各样的活动)”与主题一致,引出下文。故选F项。
【39题详解】
设空句是段首小标题。根据下文“Your health, for one, is something you may start to neglect as you throw yourself fully into college life. Needless to say, ignoring your health is absolutely unacceptable.(比如,当你全身心投入大学生活时,你可能会开始忽视你的健康。不用说,忽视你的健康是绝对不可接受的。)”和“You can start with your pal by heading over to your school’s gym or fit-ness center and try meeting new people there.(你可以和你的朋友一起去学校的健身房或健身中心,尝试在那里结识新朋友。)”可知,本段和体育锻炼有关,所以A项“Work out with a partner(和同伴一起锻炼)”是最佳标题。故选A项。
【40题详解】
根据下文“You can start with your pal by heading over to your school’s gym or fit-ness center and try meeting new people there.(你可以和你朋友一起去学校的健身房或健身中心,尝试在那里结识新朋友。)”可知,要找朋友一起锻炼,是对G项“Finding yourself an exercise buddy will help encourage you to become more active(给自己找一个运动伙伴会帮助你变得更积极)”信息的承接与说明。故选G项。
