In China, in order to ease the pressure on parents’ wallets, education is free until children reach the age of about 15. So why is it that more than half of a typical family’s spending goes on education The answer is cramming classes: a financial burden so great that it is often said to discourage couples from having children at all. Now officials are doing their part. It appears to relieve the pressure on people’s wallets.
But parents are not sure whether it will work. As many of them see it, cramming is not optional. Exams for entry to senior high schools are fiercely competitive. Then comes the dreaded Gaokao: the university-entrance exam on which a child’s future depends. No wonder the industry’s growth has been rapid. One firm, Zuoyebang (“help with homework”) says it offers live-streaming classes to more than 170m active users each month.
But officials are worried about its social impact. The birth rate is the lowest in decades and China is ageing fast. They also say that school children are overstressed. Urban pupils attend cramming classes for more than 10 hours a week, according to Deloitte, an accountancy firm.
While as the People’s Daily, an official newspaper, reported this month, the market for such services is in “endless chaos”. It listed problems ranging from misleading advertising to high prices and the use of unqualified teachers.
Government’s new regulations of clamping down on cram schools sent shivers through the industry. New Oriental, one of China’s biggest cramming companies, saw its share price on the New York Stock Exchange drop below $8, from a high of more than $19 in February. On June 9th the education ministry said a new government department would be set up to oversee such businesses, including both online courses and lessons in the classroom. There is also a widespread speculation, including in state media, that the new rules will impose limits on when firms can offer classes. They may, for example, prohibit classes after a certain time in the evening, during the summer holidays or at weekends.
Some analysts think the government may have another motive. Many of the companies belong to China’s tech giants, including Alibaba and Tencent, which have already attracted government’s attention for dominating markets and expanding into finance and other areas. Targeting the cramming business could be another way of breaking their wings. Parents wonder whether they will benefit. Some are concerned that the new rules will leave them with no choice but to use private tutors, which could prove even more costly.
24.Why do cramming schools enjoy great popularity among Chinese students
A.The exams are so demanding that they have no choice.
B.The live-streaming classes offered are really appealing.
C.Entering senior high schools makes them less competitive.
D.Government officials are worried about their performance.
25.What is NOT a problem put forward by the People’s Daily with the cram school market
A.High fees. B.Experienced tutors.
C.Improper advertising. D.Chaotic management.
26.What can we infer about the parents’ attitude towards the new regulations
A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Skeptical. D.Critical.
27.What is the main idea of this passage
A.China’s tech giants control the market. B.China says no to the cramming business.
C.Gaokao imposes too much burden to students. D.New Oriental is the biggest cramming company.

A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves—the good and bad effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too shy to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be shy because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us encourage ourselves, remember things, deal with problems, and calm ourselves down. You must know, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be bad. So in order to stay good, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without thinking about the effect they will have. But we should know that our words lead to certain effects on others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in the same way. Or harsh (刻薄的) and bad language will most likely cause the clerk to feel bad.
Words have power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving Is it needed If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words have power: both good and bad. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can give hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and encourage others to do their best. Bad words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal The choice is ours.
28.What is the main idea of the first paragraph
A.Words have a great effect on us. B.Encouraging words give us confidence.
C.Bad words may let us down. D.Not sticks and stones but words will hurt us.
29.Why does the writer say there is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves
A.Almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves.
B.Talking to ourselves can have a good effect on us.
C.Talking to ourselves always gives us courage.
D.It does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone.
30.What does the underlined sentence mean
A.Make ourselves relaxed. B.Remind ourselves regularly.
C.Praise ourselves timely. D.Give ourselves happiness.
31.What can we learn from the text
A.Encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers.
B.Bad words may encourage us to make more progress.
C.It is better to think twice before talking to others.
D.People tend to remember friendly words.

Wind turbines (涡轮) and solar panels (太阳电池板) that produce electricity are examples of “green” technology. A new study finds that such renewable energy might be green in another sense. Large collections of those turbines or solar panels appear capable of bringing rains to the desert and would allow more plants to grow.
Building large wind or solar farms just to study their question was not an option. It would be too expensive. So experts Kalnay and Safa developed a model of North Africa’s Sahara Desert to find out how wind turbines and solar farms might change the desert’s climate.
The team ran its model several times. In one run, it assumed that people would set up wind farms only. Another run assumed people would set up just solar farms. A third assumed people would build both. They would affect the desert’s weather with temperature and average daily rain increased — but differently. Setting up a mix of solar farms and wind turbines brought about a bigger change — not in temperature but in rainfall. In the Sahara, having both wind and solar farms more than doubled the amount of rain that fell, up to 215.4 millimetres (毫米) per day.
The models predicted that the average rainfall would increase over time, as more plants grew. Plants move water from the ground to the air. Warmer air can carry more water. So as this air rises, it can carry more water up to become clouds. Those clouds can release rain, relieving the thirst of plants below. Over time, this process repeats itself over and over. This positive feedback can greatly increase rains.
“Such rainfall changes could lead to better agriculture,” says Safa. “More rain also would help wild plants grow. We believe that the countries in the Sahara should seriously consider investing in wind and solar power,” he added.
32.What is the new finding of the research
A.Deserts will be suitable for farming. B.It costs much to get deserts greener.
C.Renewable energy can green a desert. D.Clean energy helps plants grow better.
33.What discouraged experts from building energy farms
A.High construction expenses. B.A lack of suitable test sites.
C.Shortage of manpower. D.Terrible climate.
34.What may Safa advise the countries in the Sahara to do
A.Build more farms to grow crops. B.Save more water for agriculture.
C.Invest in wind and solar power. D.Consider moving to other places.
35.What was the advantage of the 3rd run
A.Greatly raising rainfall in the desert. B.Increasing temperature largely.
C.Doubling global rainfall per day. D.Saving more energy with less cost.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For weeks I’d been watching Marty. I knew that something was going on with him that he was not telling me about. I saw how he silently collected his tiny allowance and put it away, spending not a cent of it. I had no idea what all this quiet activity was about, but I suspected that somehow it had something to do with Kenny.
Kenny was Marty’s best friend, whose family were desperately poor, and his mother was a proud woman and never received others’ help.
One night shortly before Christmas, Marty came to me and said in a tone mixed with pleasure and pride, “Mom, I’ve bought Kenny a Christmas present.” So that’s what he’s been up to, I said to myself.” It’s something he’s wanted for a long, long time, Mom.”
It was a little compass (指南针), “It’s a lovely gift, Marty,” I said, but even as I spoke, a disturbing thought came to mind. I knew how Kenny’s mother felt about their poverty (贫穷). They could hardly afford to exchange gifts among themselves, and giving presents to others was difficult out of the question. I was sure that Kenny’s proud mother would not permit her son to receive something he could not return in kind.
Gently, carefully, I talked over the problem with Marty. He understood what I was saying. “I know, Mom, I know, but what if it was a secret What if they never found out who gave it ” I didn’t know how to answer him.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

66.Wearing Hanfu and Learning Calligraphy
With the purpose of helping students further experience traditional Chinese culture, our school conducted an activity called “Wearing Hanfu and Learning Calligraphy” last Saturday in the Student Service Center.
Over 150 participants from three grades got involved in it actively. We not only wore Han-style clothes, but also learned how to write calligraphy with a Chinese brush. Then, we had an opportunity to display our handwriting. Besides, we shared our feelings with others and took photos for memory.
The activity turned out to be a great success and it was highly approved by most of the participants.
67.On Christmas Eve, Marty told me a good idea. I smiled to agree with him and decided to accompany him. He wrapped a compass in a decorated box, with a note saying “To Kenny, Merry Christmas, Santa Claus.” Then we slipped out to Kenny’s door, leaving the box on the doorstep. Hiding and waiting, we confirmed that it was Kenny’s mother that brought it home. On our way home, we chatted about thing to our heart content and imagined how amazed Kenny was when seeing the gift. A sense of joy swept over our mind.
The next day, Kennedy came to our home, eager to show Marty his new compass. He excitedly expressed his gratitude to the one who gave him the gift. His mother also accepted the kindness of a stranger. Hearing what Kenny said, Marty was very pleased, with his mouth rippling a joyful smile. I was satisfied to see both of them playing together and proud of what Marty did. It dawned on me that a moment of kindness could mean so much to another and that a simple act could make the world much better.
