It was the final day of our holiday: I'd gone snowboarding with my little brother and what we lacked in skill we made up for in enthusiasm, catching the first ski lift in the morning and the last lift in the afternoon. That day, we were in high spirits. We stopped near the top of an off-piste section(非滑雪场区域)that went through forests. I'd done this route a few times before and, as I was faster and more experienced, I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.
I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. I didn't fall but I lost control of the board. I was unable to turn, instead going in a straight line, gathering speed. Just as I was regaining control, I crashed into the trunk of a large tree.
It was like hitting a concrete pillar(柱子). I didn't lose consciousness but the pain was felt instantly and overwhelming. I knew pretty much immediately that my back was broken and quickly realised the situation could get very serious. I tried to stand but collapsed and almost blacked out with pain before I got halfway up.
Walking was not an option. Crawling was too slow and painful. I had another idea: I managed to get the board unattached to my feet and moved it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and, using the board as a luge(小雪橇), I started to drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope. I used my arms to stop myself sliding out of control. I descended at a slow jogging pace, trying to slow myself as much as possible.
Eventually, I managed to slide myself on to a cross-country ski path and was given first aid before a helicopter took me to hospital. The recovery road was tough, but months later, I was back doing what I love most.
24. Why did the author's brother go into the forest ahead of him?
A. Because the author lacked enthusiasm.
B. Because his brother caught the first ski lift in the morning.
C. Because the author's competence allowed him to give his brother an advantage.
D. Because the author knew a short route and had done the route a few times before.
25. What caused the author's back injury?
A. The overwhelming pain. B. The crash into a thick trunk.
C. Hitting a concrete pillar. D. Falling off the uncontrollable board.
26. How did the author save himself?
A. By sliding his body on the board.
B. By rolling down the steep, tree-lined slope.
C. By dragging the board down the hill with his hands.
D. By using his arms to stop himself sliding out of control.
27. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?
A. His recovery lasted too long to wait.
B. He will find it harder to recover mentally.
C. He saved himself and recovered on his own.
D. He is unwilling to give up his passion easily.

Digital economy and digital trade are breaking down physical barriers and becoming an important force driving global economic and trade recovery, said top officials from China and around the world on Sunday.
“Empowered by digital technologies, the booming growth of digital trade is rapidly turning into a new engine for global trade,” said Ding Zhongli, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, in a video speech at the opening ceremony of the first Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. “It is reshaping global economic and trade patterns,” Ding said.
The development of digital trade and digital economy will be key to China's modernization drive, said Yi Lianhong, Party secretary of Zhejiang province.
“In our rapidly changing world, online commercial transactions have become an absolutely necessary part of our lives and nowhere is this fact more apparent than in China,” said Leo Varadkar, the Irish minister for enterprise, trade and employment.
“Preparing for tomorrow's economy and society means seizing the opportunities presented by digital technologies,” Varadkar said. “Digital technologies will be particularly important for our decarbonization transition and supporting the achievement of our climate targets, as well as for businesses, as they move to working remotely or trading online for the first time.”
While the countless advances brought by digital technology to the world were applauded, challenges faced by the international community in the process, including the digital gap between rich and poor countries as well as a lack of international rules on digital trade, were highlighted.
Addressing these issues and bringing benefits “require joint efforts of all members including national governments, the private sector, international organizations and development agencies”, said Zhang Xiangchen, deputy director-general of the WTO. “China can make significant contributions in this regard,” Zhang said.

A. Global economy and trade are breaking down.

A. Issues can bring benefits.
B. There are still problems that need solving.
C. The advances far outweighed the challenges.
D. A lack of international rules is the only trouble.

China will accelerate law-making on making up for ecological damage, as the mechanism(机制)continues to prove its role in helping restore damaged environments across the country, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. From 2018 to 2021, authorities across the country handled about 11, 300 such cases, with compensation(补偿)amounting to almost 11.7 billion yuan.
The department showed statistics demonstrating the mechanism as effective in dealing with ecological and environmental damage.
It said that thanks to the compensation, over 36 million cubic meters of contaminated soil and 300 million cubic meters of polluted surface water have been treated. The mechanism has also helped restore over 61 million square meters of forest.
In a case exposed in late 2019, for instance, a paper company named Meili was found to have illegally dumped a large amount of thick, black waste from papermaking in the Tengger Desert. According to the ministry's investigation, most of the pollutants were dumped from 2003to 2007, polluted soil and groundwater, and damaging plants. In March 2021, after a third-party agency was brought in to assess the damage, a court in Zhongwei required the polluter to pay more than 198 million yuan in compensation in two stages.
In the first stage, Meili will pay about 44.2 million yuan to cover the cost to investigate andclean up the pollutants. The rest of the compensation will be used in the second stage to carry out compensatory restoration, groundwater monitoring and risk control in the area. In its statement, the department of law, regulation and standards also noted the remarkable progress the country has made in enhancing the institutions for the mechanism.
Bie Tao, director of the department, vowed further efforts to promote law-making for the mechanism. “Aside from striving to include ecological and environmental damage compensationinto the Environmental Protection Law and other relevant laws, we will also make efforts to promote research into a specific law for the mechanism,” he said.
32. What does the underlined word “contaminated” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Dirty. B. Pure. C. Tidy. D. Rich.
33. What does the case of the paper company Meili show?
A. How to make the law. B. How the mechanism worked.
C. How to monitor groundwater. D. How the environment was polluted.
34. What will be the focus in the coming years according to Bie Tao?
A. Detailed news about global warming.
B. Clearly defined law for the mechanism.
C. Further research into the paper company.
D. Regular process of environmental protection.
35. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Make polluters pay B. Keep the earth healthy

Tyler, my son, has a passion for playing basketball. He always asks me to take him to the gym an hour before practice begins. I often have to convince him to leave the gym after practice is over. Despite not being the most talented player, he still won two trophies(奖杯), one for his team, second place and the other for himself, a special award.
The story of winning the two trophies began when he was ten years old. The first game of the season arrived. The gym was surprisingly crowded. I saw the happy look in my son's eyes when he saw me sitting in the stands.
As I watched the other kids running up and down the court, I saw my son sitting on the bench. By the fourth quarter, Tyler hadn't even touched the ball, and his team had won the game.
The games that followed were pretty much the same. The team kept winning, but Tyler barely touched the ball. He ran so hard when he was on the court, but when he got the ball, he would quickly throw it to a teammate. I would sit there with my heart pounding out of my chest.
On the way home from one of his games, I asked, “Tyler, do you still enjoy basketball?”
He replied, “I like basketball a lot. But I know that some of the kids play better than me, so when I get the ball, I just throw it to them. We are on the same team. It doesn't matter who scores.”
Weeks of Tyler's unending enthusiasm and devotion to basketball flew by. Never discouraged, he played hard and kept practicing. I watched him improve. He told me how proud he was to be on such a good team. They were undefeated until last Saturday.
It was the final, their toughest game yet. They played well but the other team were just too strong for them. The championship was slipping out of their reach. Tyler's teammates started to lose heart.

Unforgettable Labor Experience
Last weekend our school organized us students to take part in a 2-day labor experience on Four Season Farm.
During the 2 days, we did varieties of farm work ranging from digging holes for the seeds to watering, from which we gained a lot. To begin with, it was through this experience that we are fully aware of the great significance of labor. As the saying goes, no pains, no gains. Furthermore, in addition to developing working skills, we also learned to cherish our food. Last but not least, we developed our sense of responsibility and team spirit, which is beneficial to our future development.
All in all, this unforgettable experience will make a big difference to our future.

Paragraph 1:
As for Tyler, it seemed that the intense situation didn’t affect his movement. While Tyler didn’t score much, his passion inspired the team to focus on the game, not the result. He tried hard to grab the ball and throw it to others. However, I didn’t feel awful this time, because I knew my son was just enjoying the moment he played with his teammates on the court. I could see the players were encouraged by his devotion and it gave a lift to the team. Finally, Tyler’s team came in second place, and each player received a trophy with a happy face. Towards the end of the ceremony, the host announced there was a special award for a very special player.
Paragraph 2:
“The Sportsmanship Award goes to Tyler Marsden!”, the host added in the awards ceremony. Suddenly, all the attention was on Tyler. Seeing his astonished look, I felt tears welling up in my eyes. The images of his efforts flooded to my mind. He showed up every game with a positive attitude. He knew his place while playing, and his teammates spoke highly of him. He played because he obviously loved the game, and he always ran hard and tried his best. The other kids were congratulating him when Tyler walked over and picked up his second trophy. His positive attitude and perseverance certainly earned everyone’s respect.

M: Mom, can I spend the night at Peter’s house? I finished all my homework. Can I be back tomorrow at noon?
W: Come back at eleven. I need your help with something in the kitchen.
Text 2
M: Hey, Sis, are you free to join my wife and I at Bacara Restaurant tomorrow night?
W: Oh, that sounds great, Steve! I’ve always wanted to try that place. Oh, but you know what? I’m supposed to meet my friend Daniel that night. Is it OK if he comes along?
M: Of course!
Text 3
W: My phone bill seems to go up every month. I don’t know what’s going on.
M: You need to look at your bill carefully every month. I often call the company whenever something seems wrong. They make major mistakes sometimes.
Text 4
M: This book is boring. I’ve been reading it all night, but I really don’t want to finish it. Maybe I should get another book to read.
W: I don’t think that’s what your professor had in mind when he gave you that assignment.
Text 5
W: I know it’s the day before the test, but I really need your help. My professor is busy with meetings all day. I can’t fail this class. I’ll pay double your normal rate.
M: OK, let me check my schedule ...
Text 6
W: That’s a beautiful necklace there... the one behind the diamond ring. Can I take a look at it?
M: Of course, madam. This just came in yesterday. It’s pretty old, but it’s still in great shape. You can see handmade details everywhere.
W: Oh, I love this style. It reminds me a little of what my grandmother used to wear: simple things that were not too fancy.
M: Would you like to try it on?
W: Maybe I can just check… yeah, just what I thought: a little out of my price range. Thank you, though!M: My pleasure! Let me know if I can help you after my break.

W: Oh, there is always a long time for taxis downstairs on Bradley Drive.
M: What time is your appointment?
W: 11:00, but I need to get there fifteen minutes early to fill out some paperwork. And it’s 10:30 right now.

M: Mrs. Robinson, I’m Dr Andrews. Your son, Jesse, is going to be all right.
W: Oh, thank goodness! What happened to him? I just got a call from the police department to come down here.
M: We’re not quite sure. We think the accident was the other driver’s fault. And that caused Jesse’s car to crash into a tree. The damage to Jesse’s car would suggest that.
W: Can I go in and see him?
M: I’m afraid not right now, Mrs. Robinson. We need to do some tests. I’ll give you an update in a few hours, OK?
W: All right. But what are we supposed to do now?
M: I’d advise you to get something to eat and be back in three hours, and by that time, I should have more information for you.
W: Thank you so much, Dr. Andrews!
Text 9
W: Excuse me, sir. You look like you’re looking for something. Can I help you find anything?
M: Yes. The way things are organized here is really different from usual. Did you guys change some stuff around or something?
W: Yes, we made some changes. For example, the area we’re standing in used to be the bakeryand the meat section was on the other side of the store, but we changed those locations about two weeks ago. And now the meat section is in the back of the store.
M: No wonder. I come here once a month.
W: What do you think the way it looks?
M: Well, to be honest, it’s not as easy for me to find the things I need. I like the old way better.
W: Well, I’ll keep it in mind and bring it up with my manager. Is there anything I could help you find?
M: I really need some items for the bathroom. Where would I find those?
W: On goods shelf four. The entire shelf is filled with things for the bathroom.
M: Great! I’m also looking for some oranges, but I can see the fruit section just to the left over there. I’ll let you know if I need any more help.
Text 10
The subway system in San Francisco serves the transportation needs of about five million residents, with 45 stations across a dozen cities and towns in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are a total of four lines that are known by color: yellow, orange, red and blue. All lines travel through San Francisco, and service runs from 5:00 a.m. to midnight. An interesting fact is that only one third of the stations are below street level; the rest are either at street level or ravel high above the freeway. The average speed of the trains is 35miles per hour, but they can go up to 80 miles an hour. The cost to ride the trains depends on how far you want to go. Many people who live in the suburbs take the train into San Francisco to go to work. This means that the system is very crowded from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but outside these times, the subway system is not very busy. This can be great if you want to get a seat, but it also means that there are fewer trains. During rush hour, trains come every 5-10 minutes, but in the middle of the day and late at night, trains cone every 20-30 minutes.
