Finding nutrition in wild plants was very important in ancient times. But nowadays, edible (可食用的) wild plants are a novel delicacy (美味) on the tables of people living in cities. Russians have gotten a lot of experience in looking for a bite of nature.
In the old days, Russian farmers dried or pickled (腌制) wild vegetables in the winter, since the cold made it difficult to grow crops. In lean years, for some poor families, quinoa (藜麦), nettles (荨麻), burdock (牛蒡) and other wild plants, which are common in the mountains, became the main sources of food.
Wild vegetables are also found in Russian literature. In A Sportsman’s Notebook (《猎人笔记》) by Ivan Turgenev, the author mentions making soup from burdock.
The days when most people feared starvation (饿死) are gone. Today, looking for vegetables in the wild has become an adventurous social activity in the country. In the spring, many Russians might bring their trowels (铲子) or sickles (镰刀) to gather wild vegetables with their families, noted the Global Times.
Among them, mushrooms are some of the most popular.
“Calling yourself a mushroom hunter is like calling yourself a pizza eater. You just do it,” Julia Schelkunova, a Moscow-based Russian translator and guide, told The New York Times.
According to Nicolas Courtois, the executive chef at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Moscow, one can explain the Russian love of mushroom hunting by the simple fact that the mushrooms found there are some of the best in the world. For him, mushroom hunting season is “one of the things that make Russia worth living in”, he told The New York Times.
11. Why did Russian farmers dry wild vegetables in the winter

Recently, scientists have developed a new artificial intelligence technology that can detect (识别) whether someone is lying by analyzing the muscles in their face.
Patches (贴片) placed on a person’s face detect muscle activity and then machine learning technology is used. The machine can calculate (计算) whether or not the person has been telling lies. Invented by Yael Hanein at Tel Aviv University in Israel, the machine showed a success rate of 73 percent, implying it can catch liars with ease.
According to researchers from the University of British Columbia, Canada, some of the muscles on our faces change “behavior” when we are lying. Liars usually raise their eyebrows. They also blink a lot and hold their eyes closed for longer. Closing the eyes is a way to buy time for the liar so that they can better perfect their story.
Liars often blush (脸红). Blood flows into the cheeks as they become nervous about the truth possibly being revealed (揭露).
Liars also have fake smiles. A real smile often causes the eyes to light up or become smaller. This is because more muscles are used when we are happy. A fake smile is often accompanied by “dead” eyes instead.
Choose the answer:
14. What is the purpose of developing the new artificial intelligence technology
A. To tell whether someone is lying.
B. To understand facial expressions.
C. To control muscle activities.
D. To create facial masks.
15. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The success rate. B. The machine.

On Dec 25, 2021, a new, exciting age of space science started as NASA launched (发射) the James Webb Space Telescope. “18.______” said NASA.
According to NASA, Webb is the world’s largest and strongest telescope. The old Hubble Space Telescope mostly sees what we see – visible (可见的) light. But Webb sees infrared (红外的) light, which the human eye can’t see. That means Webb can see through dust in the universe and make new discoveries by examining stars inside dust clouds. It will look at the first light after the Big Bang (宇宙大爆炸) created our universe, as well as how young stars grow.
The telescope will also take a closer look at what the atmosphere (大气层) of some other planets is made of.19.______ Webb “sees” by using mirrors to collect light from the universe. The bigger the mirror, the more it can see. The telescope is as tall as a three-story building and as big as a tennis court. It’s so big that it has to fold its mirrors to fit inside the rocket.
The telescope flew 29 days to reach its destination, which is 1.6 million kilometers away from Earth. 20._____
21.______. About 40 million hours of work, thousands of scientists from 14 countries, 10 billion dollars and one heavy-lift rocket made it all possible. Finally, it’s ready to help us answer some of the big questions about our universe.
A: It sent back its first pictures in six months.
B: Webb Space Telescope is much better than the Hubble Space Telescope
C: Webb will change our understanding of space as we know it.
D: The building of the telescope started in 2004
E: It can give scientists clues of possible life forms.

Tips for Learning English
_____22_____
The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it— again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English requires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.
______23______
The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English”.
_____24_____
There are some good English teachers that have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it. However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should try to imitate. The closer ESL / EFL students can get to this rhythm (节奏) or flow, the more convincing and comfortable they will become.
_____25_____
This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors. If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents.
_____26_____
Many people think that exercises and tests aren’t much fun. However, if you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing.
