Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there's a recession in the economy(经济), those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
28. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2
A. It offers you a chance to study abroad.
B. It can allow you to gain more knowledge.
C. It can improve the quality of your daily life.
D. It encourages you to travel around the world.
29. What does the underlined word "recession" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. change. B. drop. C. growth. D. support.
30. How can one benefit from a good education
A. You can gossip about others’ affairs.
B. You are likely to study well at school.
C. You can work well with your coworkers.
D. You get to know excellent people with similar interests.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The benefits of attending college. B. The exchange with other cultures.
C. The access to good networking. D. The ways of college education.

On Jan. 14, 2020, Microsoft retired Windows 7 and stopped offering security updates (更新) for one of the most-loved versions of its operating system. The main reason was that maintaining them required resources and engineers. These could be expensive, especially as the company focused its efforts on new products and services.
Microsoft stopped adding new features to Windows7 in 2015, and it had regularly been reminding users of the end-of-life deadline (最后期限) and inviting them to equip Windows 10, which was growing quickly. But Windows 7 made up about 27 percent of desktop and laptops in October, 2019, according to Netmarket share, which tracks (跟踪) usage of different technologies. There are more than 1.5 billion Windows devices (装置) in use and at least 400 million of them are still running the out-of-date operating system. If Windows 7 continues to decrease at the current pace, its share will drop to 13 percent by 2021-but that’s still more than 100 million devices.
Hackers are always hunting for insecure devices, which makes us anxious. If a new bug appears in Windows 7, bad actors will have millions of devices to attack and infect with virus (病毒) at once. That’s why the company has an Extended Security Update program, which will run until January 2023. Organizations that want to continue using Windows 7 and receive bug patches have to pay $50 per device in the first year, $100 in the second year, and $200 in the third year to do so.
32. Why did Microsoft retire Windows 7
A. No one wanted to use it. B. It was easy to be hacked.
C. Maintaining it costs a lot D. It was outdated and valueless.
33. How is the second paragraph developed
A. By listing data. B. By doing research.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
34. What is our worry about Windows 7
A. Decrease of its users. B. Cost for its bug patches.
C. Replacement by Windows 10. D. Security of its operating system.
35. In which part of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Culture. B. Business. C. Health. D. Education.

W: Well, maybe a pair of earrings is a good choice.
2. W: I don’t feel quite myself today. 1 just feel like sleeping and I am tired all over.
M: You ought to take care of yourself. Just go to the doctor and take an examination.
W: Yes, I will. But this afternoon I will have to finish all my paperwork in the office first.
3. M: Are you going to the Jungle Café after work
W: No, 3. I have to pack for my trip to Vancouver.
M: Ah, yes. You’re going home to see your family
W:Yes. I can’t wait. My mom’s food is the best! On Christmas Day, we’ll have a big roast beef dinner.
4. W: Nice to meet you. I’m Grace.
M: Hello, Grace. You sound Canadian. Are you from Canada
W: No. I come from Australia. Other people think I’m an American.
5. W: $220 That’s too expensive for a small bag.
M: What about the blue one It’s $180. And the red one is even cheaper, only half of the blue one.
W: All right. I will get the red one, please.
6. M: What sports do you like to watch

W: That’s what they do.
7. W: It’s Michael’s 25th birthday next week. I’d like to invite him to a restaurant he hasn’t been to yet. Could you recommend anywhere

W: Italian I don’t think I’ve ever tried Italian food.
M: Well, it’s really good. It’s a bit like Greek food — lots of vegetables, olive oil, very good cheese. There is also a fantastic salad,11. which is made of fresh vegetables with a very special kind of cheese.

W: Oh… Poor kids! Didn’t they call the firefighters to help
M: I’m not sure about that. They may have tried to put out the fire, but it was impossible to control it. With the help of the firefighters, the fire was finally brought under control, but had still caused great damage.
W: I’m wondering what caused the fire.
M: It was a cigarette end that burnt the carpet up when a man was sleeping soundly on the sofa. His son was playing with his cigarette end by the table. He threw the cigarette end on the carpet.
W: How could a kid get the cigarette!
M: That is the point. The man was drunk and he died in his dream.
10. During the summer you should be even more careful than usual because food goes bad faster in hot weather than in cold weather. When you buy frozen and refrigerated foods, don’t make long stops on your way home because frozen foods could become soft or warm. Using bags helps keep food cold until you can get home. Milk and milk products should be refrigerated immediately. When camping or picnicking or at any time when refrigeration can’t be made use of, use special dry foods. Don’t leave food in a hot car. Picnic favorites like meat, chicken and eggs should be kept in a cooler box. Above all, if the food doesn’t seem to be normal in smell or appearance, throw it away immediately. Don’t taste it.
