On Aug 7, Xu Shixiao and her partner, Sun Mengya, won gold in the first women’s canoe(划艇) double 500m event at the Tokyo Games. It was also the first Olympic gold medal for China in the event.
Yet Xu’s journey to the Olympics was bumpy—she faced lots of difficulties.
In 2013, the news that women’s canoeing was still not an Olympic event dealt her a heavy blow. At that time, Xu’s coach suggested her either changing to another sport or retiring(退役).
It was impossible for her to change the sport at age 21. Xu gave up her career and found her first job as a saleswoman. The next year she was promoted as a human resources manager.
When Xu went to work as usual in a company in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, five years ago, she was surprised to get a call from her former coach, asking about her willingness to return to canoeing and compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Xu quickly made her decision.
“I quit(辞职) my job, told my family about it and went back to training three days later. There was not much time left for me to prepare for the Olympics,” Xu recalls. “I never thought that one day I could go back to the sport. Now that I have started again, I will do my best.”
To catch the opportunity to go back to canoeing on the international level, Xu started her training—“as cruel as hell”. She began her daily exercises early morning and ended at 10:30 p.m. Every day, she would set several detailed goals for her training. “Only when I reached all my daily goals. I would go ashore,” Xu says.
The more than two months of grueling(艰辛的) training finally paid off. Xu won two gold medals at the 13th National Games in two women’s canoe events, which meant she would be part of the national team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources(资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored(得分) an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved(提高) their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated(不相关的) to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, and who'd done our writing intervention(干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and grades. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests."
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
8. What do the students start worrying about before an exam
A. Whether they can pass the exams.
B. What other students do during the test.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
9. What is the solution developed by researchers
A. Making the students focused on the test.
B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C. Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
10. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ____________.
A. became less nervous before the test
B. were better at controlling their feelings
C. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D did better than those who wrote about their feelings
11. We can infer from the last paragraph that ____________.
A. writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B. we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C. the best place to write about our worries is in the test room
D. it doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam

Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.
12. What makes purple tomatoes really special
A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor.
C. Their proper size. D. Their pleasant color.
13. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed.
14. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. The environment affects GMO foods.
B. The customers do not like GMO foods.
C. GMO products are used to help farmers.
D. Scientists think GMO products are safe.
15. What’s mainly talked about in the text
A. Different DNA can benefit plant growth.
B. Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.
C. Scientists are changing DNA of crops.
D. Human health depends on changed DNA.

The frightening day of our diving test was here. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn’t feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I’d not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive- the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.
注意:1. 续与词数应为150左右;
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end.

The next year, she was promoted as a human resources manager.

C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.

A. Making the students focused on the test.
B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.

10. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ____________.
A. became less nervous before the test
B. were better at controlling their feelings
C. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings

第四段提到“But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.(转基因产品并不受消费者欢迎,许多人被这些食物不天然或不安全的想法吓到了。
标题“Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.(转基因西红柿批准上市)”符合文意,故选B。

固定结构be+adj.+for sb. to do sth.,该空用不定式形式。故填to face。

故填a。
故填and。
的”的意思,good points of friendships意为“友谊的好处”。故填of。
故填be encouraged。

注意:1. 续与词数应为150左右;

One possible version:
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. Looking down, I found all my classmates were looking up at me. My face suddenly felt hot. Finally, I ignored them. Picturing the four steps of diving, I jumped. Then I folded my body but failed to reach for my toes. And instead of entering the water like an arrow, I fell into the water, with my body being flat. As a result, it caused a huge sound, which made all the classmates burst out laughing.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. After class, Ms. Robbins comforted and encouraged me. In the following many Monday mornings, I practiced again and again under her guidance. Gradually, I became more confident and less shy. Finally, I attended the diving test again and performed well. This time, my classmates cheered and clapped. I was so glad. I knew my success resulted from my beating my shyness and my hard practice.
