New York City streets are full of similar-looking yellow cabs (出租车). Among them, however, there is the Candy Cab—a free candy store on wheels.
Mansoor Khalid, a taxi driver, started handing out candy in 2012, following the death of his one-year-old son, who suffered from a serious heart disease. While his son was in hospital, Mansoor often took coffee and candy for the nurses and saw how happy these small gestures made them.
Wanting to feel some joy again, he began putting a couple pieces of candy on the passenger seats, just to see their faces light up. Those few pieces soon became piles and piles of candy, as Mansoor Khalid realized that the candy made everyone smile and “Candy Cab” was born! The kind man, who spends over $300 each month on the candy, says that seeing his customers happy makes his job more fun.
There is a sign in the cab that reads, “No eating or drinking inside this car except candies.” The driver even offers a free ride to any passenger that can finish all the candy that he puts in front of them—So far, no one has been able to meet the challenge.
Not surprisingly, Mansoor Khalid gets plenty of smiles and hugs and also thousands of warm messages and videos on his overflowing Twitter, and Facebook accounts. Online secondhand store thredUP has shown its tenth yearly Resale Report, which shows that the secondhand clothing industry is growing rapidly in the United States, as well as around the world. The secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026.
When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly experienced in what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Generation Z shoppers say they’ll pay more for the clothes that they know they can resell, and more than half of them resold clothes last year.
This is a much healthier opinion than storing out-of-style or ill-fitting clothes in a closet (衣柜). As resale becomes easier thanks to mobile technology and online stores, increasing numbers of customers hope to turnover their closets. This helps the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more.
Buying or selling things secondhand helps to reduce people’s worry about the environment. As thredUP reported in 2021, buying or selling things secondhand reduces a product’s carbon Footprint (碳排放量) by 82%. It requires far less water to produce. Besides, it’s a good way to save money.
Aja Barber said in her book: “Clothing is produced at a fast speed, so it is important that resale become a key part of people’s lifestyles. Accepting reuse is not always easy when we are faced with many choices — many of which encourage the buying of cheap, single-use clothes-but the rise of online resale is enabling people to make different choices and do so with pride and joy.”
It’s great to hear that resale is being accepted by more people, which can help us save money while protecting our planet.
8. What can we say about secondhand clothing according to the report
A. It is a fast-growing industry. B. It makes the market full of anxiety.
C. It is accepted by most people. D. It is more comfortable than new clothing.
9. How does the author feel about resale
A. Unclear. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on
A. The dangers of carbon footprint. B. The ways of reducing people’s worry.
C. The advantages of buying used clothes. D. The causes of environmental problems.
11. What did Aja Barber want to tell us
A. The clothing industry causes a lot of waste.
B. Online resale is changing people’s shopping habits
C. People are confused when faced with many choices.
D. Dressing styles are closely connected with social life

“Why do people enjoy saying that they are bad at math ” wonders Petra Bonfert, a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College. After seeing too many examples of adults “passing on mathematical anxiety like a virus, ”Bonfert has an important message for math phobic (恐惧的) parents and educators: “We are passing on from generation to generation the fear for mathematics. ”
Many people hold the view that math is incredibly hard, and only people with an inborn mathematical ability can understand it. While well-meaning adults may think they’re encouraging kids by sharing their own math fears, research has shown the opposite. Research has found that the problem is particularly significant for girls, who “are cspecially affected when a teacher publicly announces dislike of math before she picks up the chalk.” Moreover, a study published recently reported that female mathematical achievement was diminished in response to a female teacher’s mathematical anxiety. The effect was obvious: the bigher a teacher’s anxiety, the lower the scores. Parents’ anxiety about math can have a similar effect on kids’ achievement and their attitude toward the subject.
Fortunately, Sian Beilock, a scientist of Barnard College, has found a surprisingly easy way for parents to stop passing on math anxiety and build their children’s math confidence. The most important finding is the importance of normalizing math at home in a way that’s relaxing and playful: from using math-themed books and stories, playing with math games and toys to cooking together. He argues that we need to teach kids that working on mathematical skills is like practicing a sport. Neither can be learned by watching others perform the activity and both require encouragement and effort. You do not need an inborn mathematical ability in order to solve mathematical problems. Rather, what is required is perseverance, a willingness to take risks and feeling safe to make mistakes.”
12. Why do some people share their math fear with kids
A. To expect kids to learn from their mistake.
B. To prove only geniuses can learn it well.
C. To give encouragement to their kids.
D To stress the importance of genetic factors.
13. What does the underlined word “diminished” mean
A. Reduced. B. Measured.
C. Improved. D. Influenced.
14. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Math is a hands-on subject. B. In born math ability is essential.
C. Learning math at home is relaxing. D. Watching is a way to learn math.
15. How could you learn math well according to Sian Beilock
A. Stop anxiety B. Ask for teacher’s help.
C. Solve problems on your own. D. Be brave to face mistakes.
C 13. A 14. A 15. D

The effect was obvious: the bigher a teacher’s anxiety, the lower the scores.(以回应一位女教师的数学焦虑。 A. Reduced. Measured.测量;C. Improved.改善;D. Influenced.影响。故选A项。

故填an。
根据“varies from”可推知,此处用固定短语vary from…to…,意为“从……到……各异”,因此空处应用介词to。故填to。

根据“kiss their friends”和“the cheek”可知,此处用固定短语kiss sb. on the cheek,意为“在某人脸颊上亲吻”,因此空处应用介词on。故填on。

根据“It would be impossible”可知,此处用固定句型“It would be+形容词+to do sth.”,意为“做某事怎么样”,其中It为形式主语,不定式为真正的主语,因此空处应用describe的不定式形式。故填to describe。
故填which。

As he was nearing his home, he saw a man begging for money. He took out some coins to give the man. “Hey, man. How are you today ” Tom asked.
“Hello, sir. I’m doing all right, I guess,” the man replied, smiling at Tom. “I need to feed my children. This is a huge help. Thank you.” Tom wished him good luck, and went on his way. He felt great about helping out. But he hoped there was more he could do to this poor man, although he himself wasn’t rich at all.
During the following days, Tom tried to give the man some money and bring him food when he passed by him.
Actually, the man, named Adam, begged for money to feed the many homeless dogs he had brought to his home. He had a job at night at a construction site. But the money made there wasn’t enough for him to care for the dogs which he considered as his kids, so he had to beg for money. However, Tom didn’t know about it.
One day, Tom stopped at the newsstand (报摊) on the street. And the owner asked him, “Why do you always give that man money ” Tom explained that man had to feed his family. “But that man doesn’t have a family or any kids,” the owner said, not knowing the truth.
Tom angrily walked away, thinking that man lied to him. He walked to where he knew the man was begging for money and met him. “I know you don’t have children. Stop lying to people. If you need a job, I can help you. This is just wrong,” Tom said angrily. The man stood up and explained, “Sir, I’m not lying at all.” Hearing Adam’s words, Tom said, “Prove it.”

Then he explained why he had to beg for money.
Feeling sorry, Tom decided to do something to help Adam care for his dogs. Tom said sorry to Adam and petted some dogs that approached him. He sat down with Adam and they talked further. Finally Tom decided to take one dog home so he could care for it. Tom also began encouraging animal shelters and other people to help Adam and his dogs. Many people came with dog food, medicine, etc. At last Adam had a better housing situation, and he continued helping dogs. Tom never judged another person without knowing the whole story ever again.

Wanting to feel some joy again, he began putting a couple pieces of candy on the passenger seats, just to see their faces light up.

D. Dressing styles are closely connected with social life
D
D. To stress the importance of genetic factors.

Tom angrily walked away, thinking that man lied to him. He walked to where he knew the man was begging for money and met him. “I know you don’t have children. Stop lying to people.
