Rain was beating down on my car as I drove slowly down a less-traveled road. Suddenly the
steering wheel jumped in my hands as one of the tires burst with a bang. It was impossible for me to
change that tire! A thought that a passing motorist might stop disappeared at once. Why would anyone
I knew I wouldn’t. Then I remembered that a short distance up a little side road was a house. I started
the engine and drove slowly until I came to that house.
I sounded the horn. Then the door opened and a little girl about eight stood there. I rolled down
the window and called out that I needed someone to change the flat tire because I was disabled and
couldn’t do it myself. A moment later, the girl came out with a raincoat and a hat, followed by a man
who called a cheerful greeting. I sat there, comfortable and dry, and felt sorry for the man and the little
girl working so hard in the storm. Well, I would pay them for it. The rain seemed to be little now, and I
rolled down the window to watch. It seemed to me that they were awfully slow and I was beginning to
become impatient. Finally, it was done and then they were standing at my car window.
He said, “This is a bad night for car trouble, but you’re all set now.” “Thanks,” I said. “How much
do I owe you ” He shook his head. “Nothing, madam. Cynthia told me you are on crutches (腋杖). Glad
to be of help. There’s no charge.” I held out a five-dollar bill, but he made no effort to take it and the
little girl stepped closer to me and said, “Grandpa can’t see it.”
A blind old man and a child! They were just working with cold, wet fingers for tools in the dark—
a darkness that for him would probably never end until death. I don’t remember how long I sat there
after they said good night, but it was long enough for me to search deep within myself. I realized that I
was filled with self-pity, selfishness, indifference to the needs of others.
Helping others is a way of life, one that I am trying to follow. It isn’t always easy, but the value is
there. I am trying now not only to climb 14 steps each day, but in my small way to help others.
24. Why didn’t the writer expect passers-by to help her
A. They wouldn’t notice her in the rain. B. She knew someone in a house could help.
C. They were unlikely to travel on that road. D. She thought they would ignore others’ needs.
25. How did the writer feel when finding the repair work slow
A. Annoyed. B. Nervous. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
26. What do we know about the grandfather
A. He lost his sight. B. He was old and lonely.
C. He was childless and poor. D. He was a real professional.
27. What does the writer try to illustrate by sharing her experience
A. God helps those who help others.
B. Practice can make the disabled skillful.
C. Money is not necessarily the most important.
D. The disabled should also try to offer helping hands.

Insurance companies are starting to use smartbox technology, so good drivers can benefit from
cheap insurance rates.
The smartbox, similar to a black box for airplanes, records details about how your car is driven,
which can contribute to cheap car insurance for responsible drivers. The device is connected to the
electronics in your car and collects information such as time, speed, braking, cornering, acceleration
and location. It’s like having an insurance agent sitting beside you while driving.
The smartbox data is wirelessly transferred in real time to the insurance company and provides a
profile of when, where and how you drive. This profile is then used to compare insurance rates and to
reward low-risk driving behavior with cheap insurance rates.
Drivers are high-risk when they drive irresponsibly such as speeding, frequent lane changing,
driving in high-risk locations or at high-risk times such as in heavy traffic or late at night.
These new electronic inventions are intended to practice a new standard in lieu of the previous
way to sort drivers into group behavior to determine insurance coverage and premium (保费) payments.
For example, young drivers are more likely to drive fast, drive at night and use a cell phone while
driving. Statistically, young drivers are more likely to cause an accident, so insurance companies charge
them higher rates to cover the costs of accident claims. So even if you’re a young, responsible driver,
you will pay high insurance rates because of group behavior. This technology allows you to provide
proof that your driving behavior doesn’t fit the pattern of your demographic (统计) group.
All the information collected about your driving can be viewed online — including what you’re
doing well and what could be improved. Your insurance premium is then calculated according to your
driving profile.
28. What do we know about the smartbox according to paragraph 2
A. It is a black box. B. It helps reduce car insurance.
C. It benefits responsible drivers. D. It records how the car is produced.
29. How does the insurance company monitor the driving
A. By monitoring the device in the car. B. By collecting the smartbox data.
C. By watching the traffic on the roads. D. By arranging an agent beside the driver.
30. Which of the following can best explain the underlined phrase “in lieu of” in paragraph 5
A. Instead of. B. Full of. C. In defense of. D. In favor of.
31. What will the use of smartboxes bring about
A. Better service for cars. B. Much lower prices of gas.
C. More convenient transport. D. More reasonable insurance charge.

Chinese scientists have discovered a new water reservoir (储备) on the moon in the form of glass
beads (珠子), which could have major significance for finding out water of the earth’s only natural
satellite and potentially obtaining them to support future lunar missions.
A study published in the journal Nature Geoscience last week revealed soil samples collected by
China’s Chang’e-5 lunar probe contained glass beads that held water in the form of hydroxyl. These
glass beads are created when meteoroids (流星体) hit the moon’s surface, throwing up hot molten droplets
which then cool and turn solid. They function like a sponge, taking in hydrogen atoms carried by the solar
wind to form hydroxyl, thus playing an important role in the water cycle of the lunar surface.
While each bead only holds a tiny amount of water, these glass balls can be seen everywhere on
the moon and researchers estimated lunar soils could store as much as 270 billion metric tons of water.
For decades, scientists thought the moon was completely dry until discoveries in recent years revealed
its soil could hold water. “The moon potentially holding 270 billion metric tons of water is quite
substantial, though it pales in comparison to the amount of water in the earth’s oceans,” said Hu Sen, a
researcher from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one
of the key scientists behind the study.
These findings not only provide insights into the origins, storage, and transportation of water on
celestial bodies without atmospheres, but they also may prove helpful for planning and building a
sustainable human habitat on these planets, he added.
However, the specific origins of the water on the lunar surface remain a mystery. The study
presented several potential sources, including solar wind implantation, the release of trapped gas when
the moon was hot and volcanically active, and so on.
32. What is the use of the glass beads
A. Absorbing water. B. Drying water. C. Creating water. D. Recycling water.
33. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The moon was a dry place for decades.
B. The moon holds as much water as the earth does.
C. Scientists discovered the moon could store much water.
D. The amount of water on the moon is comparatively large.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The research findings are beneficial. B. Further research needs to be done.
C. Water sources have been identified. D. More breakthroughs will be made.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. New Discovery: Water on the Moon B. New Finding: Glass Beads on a Satellite
C. Future Habitat for Humans: The Moon D. Future Missions: China’s Chang’e Lunar Probes

While rice and wheat are the two commonly consumed cereal grains nationwide, a study covering
over 100,000 people in Northwest China has revealed that choosing rice as a staple food may lead to a
lower risk of obesity (肥胖症).
36 They were divided into three groups according to their weekly rice and wheat intake.
The first group eats rice as their staple food. The second group’s staple food is wheat, and the third
group consumes both rice and wheat as their staple food, with similar frequency.
The results show rice preference may be associated with a lower risk of obesity in the participants.
37 When wheat lovers changed their staple food to rice, the participants showed a 36.5 percent
lower risk of normal-weight obesity in men and a 20.5 percent lower risk in women.
Previous studies show that wheat protein promoted weight gain by reducing heat production and
energy consumption, while rice protein shows the potential for anti-obesity effects. 38 So it
leads to a higher energy density (密度) of wheat than rice. According to the Chinese Food Composition
Table, the energy content of noodles or steamed bread is three times that of cooked rice of the same
weight. 39 Wheat lovers tend to eat large bowls of noodles with fewer vegetables or less meat,
and sometimes even with a large amount of oil.
The researchers concluded rice preference could be associated with lower risks of fatness. They
also noted that given the vast land and diverse ethnic groups present in Northwest China, the reasons
above do not prove everything. 40
A. Besides, rice lovers pay more attention to nutrients.
B. Higher wheat intake is relevant to higher risks of obesity.
C. Researchers collected data from participants aged 35 to 74.
D. Moreover, wheat absorbs less water than rice when cooked.
E. Meanwhile, rice lovers often include more vegetables and meat in their diet.
F. Participants with wheat preference are likely to develop unknown diseases.
G. Further studies are necessary to fully understand hidden reasons for the observed links.
