How do we know the time A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影 子 ) showed the movement of the sun, so people were able to know midday. About 3,500 years ago, the Egyptians made sundial( 日晷), another kind of clock, to tell the time. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with

a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches certain level, it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3, 400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run businesses, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.

The first floppy disks were large, expensive, and not very useful — each disk could store just 175 KB of information! Later, floppy disks got smaller and better. But even the best ones could only hold 1.44 MB. You would need three or four disks just for one song, and about 22,000 disks to match the storage (储存空间) available on a 32 GB phone!
Picture This
It’s easy to take photos today. People often have thousands just on their phones! But photos used to be expensive, and people took fewer of them. To take a photo, you had to buy a roll of film. This allowed you to take about 30 photos. After finishing the roll, you left it at a shop. The shop developed the photos to make them be seen, which you could collect after a few days.

Confucius ’ Life and Thought
Confucius (551--479 BC) was a great thinker and teacher who was full of experiences in the Spring and Autumn Period of China. He was born in Qufu, a capital of the state of Lu ( part of Shandong). He acted as an official(官员) there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. And he tried to teach people that peace was very important
for a healthy society. However, it was not until the rule of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty ( 156 --87 BC) that his ideas were finally put into practice. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius' teachings formed the base of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues (美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius' thought is considered to be the necessity of Chinese culture and Eastern thought.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren (kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li ( ceremony, tradition), zhi (knowledge), and xin ( trust). Another virtue is xiao. xiao is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying(服从) and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. xiao forms the base of a peaceful society. And he is the final goal according to his thought. It means social peace.
Here's one of Confucius' famous sayings, “Do not do to others as You do not wish to be done to You.” Another saying of his is “In the company of two others, I Can always find one worthy of being my teacher.”, which means we can always learn something from other people.
It is clear that Confucius' thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will continue to do something good to the development of china and even the whole world.

I'm Li Ming, the monitor of Class Five, Grade Nine. We all appreciate you for your hard work. Now I'd like to share something with you about our class. First, could you speak English more slowly so that we can follow you Second, too much written work makes us so busy that we have no time to think about it. If you give us more chances to have activities and make us speak more often in class, it would be better. Finally, too much grammar makes us really bored. Would you like to try to explain it in an active way In all,if you can make some small changes, we can learn English better.I hope that we can have a good year together.
Yours,Li Ming
