My 12-year-oldniece(侄女) was staying with us for a couple of days. She was remembering some acts of kindness that we did together when she was less than five years old. We talked about how so much had changed, and how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.
The next day, I needed something from the downtown area and happened to take her with me. As we walked around on the street, we heard a beautiful male voice singing a very soulful song. We turned around to see a middle-aged man sitting on a street corner with his guitar. A couple were sitting on a bench nearby and listening to his music.
After getting a few things done, we happened to sit at an outdoor dining restaurant across from him on the other side of the street. My niece was learning how to sing herself, and she kept smiling and saying how wonderful his singing was. Seeing how moved she was by his music, at the end of our meal, I gave her a ten-dollar bill and asked her to walk across the street and put it in his bowl.
She was a little surprised. “Really ” she asked with bright eyes. I nodded. So she headed over and as she approached, the man was just finishing a song and started talking to her, and they ended up having a sweet conversation. When I was at school, I hated art. Growing up in north Wales, I was not able to rate higher than an E in my final exams. I wasn’t too upset. I thought I wasn’t going to choose it as a career.
By the time I was about four, I started sleepwalking. At night, I used to go under the stairs and scribble (乱画) on the wall. When I was 15, I was no longer just making scribbles. I was drawing anything from pictures of Marilyn Monroe to unrealistic paintings. I showed some to my art teachers. They said: “Why can’t you do this in class ” It was something I struggled to understand myself. I tried so hard to draw when I was awake, practising and using the same tools. But no matter what I did, I was unable to recreate the drawings.
Once I left school, I became a nurse, mainly helping people with brain injuries. I also met my partner. He is unbelievably supportive of my art and sleepwalking habits—he often films me as I work. And when I begin to paint in my sleep, I’ll use any tools I can find, sometimes knives and forks. That’s the only thing that worries my partner—that I’ll accidentally hurt myself. I have gone to various sleep clinics to try to get to the bottom of what’s happening, but nothing out of the ordinary was found health-wise. Alcohol or lack of sleep does bring the sleepwalking on more, though, so I am careful about that.
I have learned to hug my unusual talent and set up my first art exhibition in 2007 at my local in library to raise money for cancer research. Within a week, I had 160 calls from different media outlets and organizations wanting to hear about my art. I was over the moon. I then decided to leave my very fulfilling job in nursing and become a full-time artist.
28、Why wasn’t the author upset about her art final exams
A. She got used to her E in art. B. She had little interest in her study.
C. She was confident in herself. D. She was unwilling to work in art field.
29、What did art teachers think of the author’s sleepwalking paintings
A. They felt worried about them. B. They expressed doubt about them.
C. They were indifferent about them. D. They showed confidence about them.
30、What does the underlined phrase “over the moon” probably mean in last paragraph
A. Extremely pleased. B. Really concerned.
C. Highly annoyed. D. Greatly shocked.
31、What can we infer about the author from the text
A. She always enjoys painting.
B. She is often injured by sleepwalking.
C. She has no trouble in sleepwalking now.
D. She makes full use of her sleepwalking talent.

A growing number of experts believe language can influence how we think just as our thoughts and culture can shape how language develops. One instance is that language appears to have a fascinating effect on the way we think about time.
Scientists who believe in this have shown that English speakers typically view time as travelling from left to right, most likely in line with the way the English language is written. However, Hebrew speakers, who read and write from right to left picture time as following the same path as their text.
Languages also encode(编码) time in grammar. In English for example, the future is one of three simple tenses, along with the past and the present—we say “it rained”, “it rains and “it will rain”. But in German, you can say Morgen regnet, meaning “it rains tomorrow” The same is true for many other languages including Chinese.
But does this affect how we think Keith Chen set out to test whether people who speak “futureless” languages might feel closer to the future than those speaking other languages. He discovered that speakers of futureless languages were more likely to engage in future focused activities. They were 31% more likely to have put money into savings and collected 39% more wealth by retirement. They were also 24% less likely to smoke, 29% more likely to be physically active, and 13% less likely to be medically obese(肥胖的). This result held even when controlling for factors such as socioeconomic status and religion. In fact, countries with futureless languages on average 5% more of their GDP per year.
It is becoming increasingly clear that language is influencing how we think about the world and our passage through it. This is not to say that any one language is “better” than another, but being aware of how languages differ helps you think and communicate better. And while learning a new language won’t necessarily make you a genius we can all gain a fresh viewpoint and more flexible understanding of the world through it.
32、What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. A comparison of different writing styles.
B. A significant study on the direction of time.
C. The special reading habit of Hebrew speakers.
D. The effect of writing systems on views of time.
33、What can we learn from Keith Chen’s experiment
A. German people mostly live at present.
B. Chinese people tend to plan for the future.
C. Futureless languages bring increased profits.
D. Languages with future tenses call for change.
34、What might the author suggest people do
A. Use foreign languages frequently.
B. Choose among languages flexibly.
C. Be careful with futureless languages.
D. Pay attention to language differences.
35、What is the best title for the text
A. Language Reflects the Local Culture.
B. Language Affects Our Sense of Time.
C. The Benefits of Learning a New Language.
D. The Relation between language and thought.

Maybe there is a Father Christmas!
Anna stood anxiously staring at the pouring rain while little Molly looked up at a pretty doll in the window of the toy shop on the edge of town. "Mummy, "Molly said, "that's the doll I would like Father Christmas to bring me." A tear rolled down Anna's cheek and she knew it would be impossible this year. They were supposed to start a new life in Spain one and a half years ago before her husband Tim was cruelly taken from them by a car. Their small amount of savings were quickly spent on Tim’s funeral costs and necessities, leaving her in heavy debt.
To her relief, the local people had helped to support her through these difficult times and especially Juan, owner of the local grocery store, a single man, who would often put something special into her shopping bag, even though he himself had been going through a difficult period — his mother died of cancer and he was busy handling the sale of his mother’s house on the edge of town.
As the rain stopped, Anna and Molly started walking home. She was thinking about buying an umbrella after paying the rent with her upcoming wage when Molly shouted excitedly, "Mummy, what’s that on the road " Anna looked down and saw a bag lying in the water, which was obviously lost because of the sudden rain.
They got home and dried themselves before Anna focused on the bag. Opening it and seeing bundles of money inside, she stood back in shock and cried, "Is this a present from kindness I can pay off my debt, buy Molly’s favorite doll and my new umbrella ...” Then reality set in, Anna was a very moral person and would never steal even the slightest little thing, let alone bundles of money. She went to bed with all thoughts in her mind.
Paragraph 1:
Early next morning, Anna headed where she decided to go.

At supper, Anna had an unexpected visitor—Juan with gift boxes in his hands.

应用文 答案:
Dear James,
I am awfully sorry that you are so stressed out before the examinations. However, the situation is not unchangeable and the following are some suggestions for you to relieve stress.
To begin with, keep a balance between study and rest. As a saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. You are supposed to take regular exercise to keep fit and energetic. Additionally, it's highly recommended to have brief conversations with close friends or trustworthy teachers, from whom you are meant to get confidence and comfort. Most importantly, you should find out your own strengths and weaknesses in your study, learn to be more organized and make a regular learning schedule.
Please take my suggestions into account. I’m convinced everything will be better and may you succeed in the examinations.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

读后续写
Anna walked directly to the police station. After figuring out what had happened, the policemen kept note of her information and thought highly of her. She felt a little shy and said, “The huge money would be a great help for me to get through the difficulties, but the owner would get into great trouble, instead.” Stepping out of the station, Anna felt a fresh breeze on her face, making her relieved and comfortable.
Seeing Anna's surprised look, Juan told her that he was the owner of the bag and he came to show his thanks. That morning, because of the sudden rain, he was so hurried to get on the taxi that he lost his bag. "Thank you so much for your help." Juan said to Anna and then turned to Molly, handing her the boxes "Here you are, little girl." After opening the boxes, Molly cried with great joy, "Mom, look! Here it is! The doll Father Christmas brings me!" Looking at her happy daughter, Anna smiled, murmuring "Maybe there is a Father Christmas!"
