It's dinner time. Susan Green sets the table. Her husband Michael and two children take their seats at
the table, and an awkward silence descends (降临 ). 14-year-old Carolyn plays restlessly with a fork,
while 16-year-old Billy frowns (皱眉) at the dish in front of him. Meanwhile, Michael reaches absently
for an object that isn't there, an unmistakable look of disappointment on his face. The Greens are
experiencing their first evening without electronic devices (电子设备 ), as part of a month-long
experiment to see if going without technology will make them a happier family.
The use of electronic devices has increased greatly over the past 10 years, and recent studies suggest
that they may be responsible for decreased levels of happiness. Susan Green had noticed these worrying
tendencies in her own family. "I was often telling Billy to turn off his game and go and get some fresh air,
or Carolyn to stop chatting with her friends and get some sleep. What worried me more is that when they
invited their friends over, I would find them all sitting together looking at their phones and not talking,"
she says.
Susan's concerns made her carry out her own research into the issue. When she came across an article
in a weekend newspaper about people who gave up using electronic devices for a month, she was eager to
try it with her own family. However, she realised that it was going to take more than reading an article to
persuade them. “I found some of the research mentioned in the article very worrying, but I doubted if my
family would be convinced," she says. “But I wanted to avoid financial rewards (金钱奖励), as they felt
a bit too individualistic.” In the end, the promise of a fun family day out at a theme park persuaded the
Greens to go tech-free for a whole month.
The Green family's experiment is now over, but they have made a promise to try and stick to some of
the rules that they established during their tech-free month. Susan feels delighted with the results of the
experiment and is certain that it helped her to achieve her aim of improving her family's happiness.
24. Why did everybody at the table seem unhappy
A. They didn't like the food. B. Someone argued with the others.
C. Someone was absent from this family gathering.
D. They were experiencing an evening without technology.
25. What about Billy and Carolyn troubled Susan most
A. They had fallen behind with their studies. B. They failed to get on with their friends.
C. They were afraid to talk when being in front of others.

Holly Cooke wasn't a fan of weekends. Whenever Friday rolled around, it was a reminder that she
had no one to spend her spare time with.
“I was super lonely,” said Cooke, who relocated from Stoke-on-Trent — a city in central England —
to London when she was 22. “I moved here knowing absolutely no one." She had high hopes of going to
restaurants, bars and the theater as she had done before, but she didn't want to do those activities alone. “I
was desiring community; people who wanted to hang out and have fun,” said Cooke, now 26.
She grew so desperate for company, she said, that she eventually found herself Googling: “How to
make friends in London.” The search proved mostly futile, though she found a few other women who
were also lonely in London on some social media apps.
Cooke decided to create a Facebook group called "The London Lonely Girls Club," and invited the
people she connected with on the apps to join. She then asked everyone to meet for brunch (早午餐). “It
was so difficult,” she said, adding that she asked a friend from out of town to come in for the brunch, in
case no one else showed up. “Saying that you're lonely and you don't have people around, admitting to
that was really scary."
Cooke was pleasantly surprised when five women showed up and they all got along well. This
proved to Cooke that she was not alone in her loneliness, and that she could help others in the same
situation. She decided to start planning meetups every few weeks, and word slowly spread about the
Facebook group. Now, five years later, the London Lonely Girls Club has more than 35,000 members.
The London Lonely Girls Club organizes various types of gatherings, including park picnics, art
lessons, dinners and yoga. For some events, attendees are charged a small fee of about $3 to cover
deposits and other charges associated with renting a venue (场地).
Cooke said she lost count of how many women have made lasting friendships through her group. "It's
beautiful and it's worthwhile, and it's the reason I've carried on,” she said. “As long as there is a need, we
will be here.”
28. What can we learn about Holly Cooke
A. She was addicted to social media apps. B. She got used to being alone on weekends.
C. She had very little time to make friends in London.
D. She used to meet friends on weekends when in Stoke-on-Trent.
29. What does the underlined word "futile" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Unsuccessful. B. Unstoppable. C. Fruitful. D. Powerful.
30. Why did Holly Cooke ask a friend from out of town to come to the brunch
A. She wanted to have a backup plan in case the brunch didn't go well.

“Half the park is after dark” is more than a clever saying; it's a way of life — especially for Tyler
Nordgren. He's an artist, astronomer and national park lover who invented the expression and illustrated
(加插图) the accompanying poster (海报 ) series for the national parks. The printed pictures show the
midnight blue sky with the vastness (浩瀚)of the Milky Way. They usually picture a star-lit silhouette (轮
廓) of one of the park's driving attractions, and most posters will mention "See the Milky Way" or "Half
the Park Is After Dark.”
Unfortunately, the night sky, or the actual night sky, isn't something most people get to experience
fully. According to a recent study, over 80 percent of the world cannot see the whole night sky because of
light pollution. From streetlights to buildings to giant advertisements — think Time Square in New York
— artificial light illuminates (照亮 ) the night sky, stealing the stars from us. This is why Nordgren
encourages us to get away from light pollution and experience the true starry sky in a national park.
“Think about all the history and all the people who ever looked up at the stars and wondered about
the universe. That's something that we no longer have today,” says Nordgren. “Get out into nature, and
see the universe beyond our own atmosphere. And when you see that, you feel awe (敬畏 ),” says
Nordgren. According to a 2018 study, experiencing awe can increase feelings of humility (谦逊 ) —
making one kinder, more modest and more positive. One can feel this sense of awe after hiking a
mountain or seeing the Milky Way.
Imagine experiencing a national park after dark. As the sun goes down, the park empties. Many park
visitors return to their campsites or hotels, and now the park is quiet and peaceful. "This is a great time to
experience some of the park's best features," Nordgren says. "Your eyes will most likely adjust, but
bringing a flashlight is always a good idea. It's always wise to make sure you're not hiking near cliffs (峭
壁) in the dark and be aware of what sort of wildlife may be in the park.”
32.What is shown in the posters
A.The night sky above national parks. B.The crowdedness of national parks.
C.The life of national park lovers. D.The promise to the protection of national parks.
33.What does the author indicate by mentioning Time Square
A. New York's nightlife is very busy. B. Stars are the wonders existing beyond technology.
C. City life without artificial light is hardly possible.
D. Stars can hardly be seen in the night sky because of light pollution.
34. What is the finding of the 2018 study
A. Experiencing awe is helpful.
B. Positive people tend to hike a mountain.
C. It is difficult to see the Milky Way nowadays.
D. People are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature.

Failing Is Better than Not Trying at All
Do you remember the last time you tried something new and failed 36 Failure is an important
part of learning and growing. Don't immediately give up — try as much as you can. Here are several
realizations that can help push you to try more.
37 You can be filled with thoughts of what could have happened if you had only decided to try.
Something good could have happened, and you will never know unless you try.
Sure, there are a lot of uncertainties that come when trying something new. 38 However, not
every result is unpleasant from doing something. You have to work hard and be patient if you want
positive results.
Repeated failures can be very discouraging. But you don't become a complete loser just because you
failed. 39 Every failure can show what doesn't work so that you can try something different next
time.
Trying something new and different can be risky. Your time and efforts can be wasted when nothing
happens. 40 Some of the most significant gains can only be made by taking risky strategies.
It takes time to achieve success and your goal, but when you have tried everything available and
nothing had happened, this is the only time you should give up and stop trying.
A. If so, don't worry.
B. So you never know if you can be successful or not.
C. There are several reasons why you may fear failures.
D. However, we won't know if something fruitful can occur unless we try.
E. Having a solid support system can also help you build confidence in taking risks.
F. An excellent way to help somebody keep moving forward is to treat each failure as a life lesson.
G. Perhaps the most important thing you don't want to experience from not trying is regret later in your
life.

第二节 书面表达(20分)。
Dear Margaux,
In response to your letter informing me that you have trouble striking a balance between your study
and your hobby—photography, I’m writing to offer you some advice.
With excellent time management, you’re bound to do well in both your study and photography. First
of all, it is advisable to stay focused in class, which will improve your efficiency in finishing your
assignments. Thus, more time can be saved for your hobby. At weekends, you’d better not waste so much
time on some meaningless social media or video games. Instead, you can make good use of the time for
your hobby, for example, participating in some activities related to photography together with some
friends who share the same interest. In this way, you will find your skills in photography improved after
some time.
Hopefully, my tips above can be of great help and benefit to you. Wish you a successful
balance between your study and photography.
Yours,
Li Hua
