Basketball had always been a huge part of my life ever since I was little, and it had been my favorite sport until high school. I was captain of the team in my second year of high school. I felt I had to do very well. The stress I put myself under was unhealthy: I felt as if I couldn’t make mistakes, and that stopped me enjoying the game I once loved. I finished my second-year basketball season and had no fun at all.
My Spanish teacher came up to me after my second-year basketball season, asking if I had ever thought about playing Unified (融合的) Basketball. Unified Sports joins people with intellectual or physical disabilities (智力或身体缺陷) (called Athletes), and people without disabilities (called Partners), on the same team. The main goal is to build friendships and encourage inclusivity. I had thought about it before, but there was a rule that said I couldn’t play Unified if I played basketball for the school. So, I finally decided to quit school basketball.
Quitting basketball was not easy. I received strong opposition from my parents and the coaches as well as my friends who were on the team. It was not a popular or traditional decision, but I knew it was the right one for me.
Walking into my first Unified practice, I did not know what to expect. I awkwardly (尴尬地) introduced myself to a few of the Unified Athletes, but after the first day, it already seemed like we were becoming a family. We won a lot of games, but we also had the most fun I’ve ever had. All the stress I used to feel disappeared when I played with them. Seeing the Athletes score their first points of the season and then dance down the whole court excitedly is one of my favorite basketball memories.
Unified Sports opened my eyes to how much more there is to sports than winning and losing. The Athletes on the team thought that I was there to help them, but they did not know how much they helped me.
4. How did the author find playing basketball in his second year of high school
A. It did no good to his physical health. B. It took up too much of his free time.
C. It needed some special skills. D. It brought him too much pressure.
5. What was the reaction of the author’s parents to his decision to quit basketball
A. They were against it. B. They thought it was right for him.
C. They introduced another coach to the author. D. They took the author to hospital.
6. How did the author feel after taking up Unified Basketball
A. Awkward and silly. B. Stressed and bored.
C. Safe and confident. D. Relaxed and happy.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. My Love of Basketball
B. Unified Sports Changed My Life
C. My Memories of Playing Basketball
D Sports Helped Me Make Lasting Friendships
C
31 years ago, Allen Johnson was a passenger in a van when a truck hit it. Johnson survived, but his left arm was crushed beyond repair, and he lost his memory for two years.
His pilot license was removed and he could no longer follow his passion for diving. But he had been sailing since he was 16. So, in 2004, he decided to buy a boat, fitting it out so he could sail it single-handedly. “I didn’t know then if I could sail with one hand.“ he says. ”But I had always thought I could do anything if I put my mind to it.”
Within a year, Johnson had taken on the challenge of being the first one-armed sailor to tour around the British Isles. Then he crossed the Atlantic alone in 2008. Last year he became the first sailor with a disability to tour around the globe.
Sailing single-handed for weeks requires mental, as well as physical, strength, especially when you are alone. So how does he do it It’s a question that makes the yachtsman (帆船运动员) laugh. “When you have seven children it’s lovely to have a little time on your own! It’s awesome,” he jokes.” I do a log every hour, and my diary, and I read a few books. I have very little sleep.” “I’m a sociable person: I do like lots of people around. Answering emails and chatting over Facebook can help stop any loneliness,” he adds.
When Johnson made his first Atlantic crossing, he was disappointed to have his peace and quiet life broken by his arrival on land. But, he says, he threw himself into meeting new people. In between adventures, he likes sailing with people who haven’t tried it before or get involved in yacht races with friends. Perhaps the main reason for his success in adjusting to life after a big adventure, he says, is that he always has an idea for a new one in his back pocket. “It keeps me ticking over—there’s always something new to do. I just like challenges and one leads to another.”
8. Why couldn’t Allen Johnson continue his passion for diving
A. He lost his left arm. B. His license was due.
C. He had a new hobby. D. His memory was poor.
9. How did Johnson spend his time at sea
A. By staying awake. B. By visiting old friends.
C. By attending to his children. D. By keeping himself busy.
10. What mainly leads to Johnson’s successful adjustment to life after a big adventure
A. Socializing with new people. B. Scheduling new adventures.
C. Coaching new yachtsmen D. Organizing yacht races.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Sailing around the world for fun. B. Adapting to life in face of challenges.
C. A childhood dream coming true. D. A terrible accident causing misadventure.
D
Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However scientists deny these claims.
Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.
12. What makes purple tomatoes really special
A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor.
C. Their proper size. D. Their pleasant color.
13. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed.
14. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. The environment affects GMO foods.
B. The customers do not like GMO foods.
C. GMO products are used to help farmers.
D. Scientists think GMO products are safe.
15. What’s mainly talked about in the text
A. Different DNA can benefit plant growth.
B. Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.
C. Scientists are changing DNA of crops.
D. Human health depends on changed DNA.

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分 20 分)
任务型阅读。
Fortune Cookie Friends
Jenny frowned (皱眉) as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a stupid idea,” Jenny complained mostly to herself.
“What’s that ” her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots.
“Nothing,” Jenny mumbled (咕哝). The girl had been angry about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her. Jenny sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Jenny’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Jenny was happy as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Jenny’s age. As she filled their glasses, Jenny realized the twins were in her class. Jenny lowered her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Jenny’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
“Honey, what are you doing back here We need you out front with the customers.”
“Mom, I don’t want to be out there. There are kids from school!”
“So ” her mother asked. “That’s good! Go to take them some fortune cookies and say hello!” she said to Jenny, pointing at the fortune cookies paper which read, “Many friends are found with a single smile.”

D. Sports Helped Me Make Lasting Friendships
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. D 7. B

A. Socializing with new people. B. Scheduling new adventures.
C. Coaching new yachtsmen D. Organizing yacht races.
11. What is the text mainly about

C. A childhood dream coming true. D. A terrible accident causing misadventure.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. B

However, scientists deny these claims.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B

根据第一段中“Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).(虽然颜色不同寻常,但现在这种特殊的西红柿已经获得了美国政府的批准,它含有很高的抗氧化剂)”以及第二段中“Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. (科学家认为,AOS可能有助于预防心脏病,并有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。)”可知,紫色番茄中含有抗氧化剂,抗氧化剂能够有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。故紫色番茄的特殊之处在于它的医用价值。故选A。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be the same. We need to see more experiments about it.”(虽然这是个好消息,但在老鼠身上进行的实验并不总是能预测对人类的影响是一样的。我们需要看到更多关于它的实验。)可知,作者对此实验目前心存怀疑。故选B。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。第四段提到“But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.(转基因产品并不受消费者欢迎,许多人被这些食物不天然或不安全的想法吓到了。
标题“Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.(转基因西红柿批准上市)”符合文意,故选B。

Li Hua
【答案】Dear Jack,
I heard that you had a quarrel with your parents because you are addicted to mobile phone games and social media apps. So you must be upset now.
To be honest, what you did is not the right thing. Firstly, you are supposed to focus on your study instead of mobile phone games or apps, which have negative effects on your health or even make you have poorer eyesight. What’s more, you shouldn’t quarrel with your parents. They were concerned about your health and study, but you didn’t show respect, which made them heartbroken. I think you should apologize to them sincerely and quit this bad habit now.
I am expecting your good news.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
