Climate change does not offer comfort, but it can produce winners as well as losers. With parts of England as hot as the Champagne region of France was in the 1980s, the sparkling-wine industry is already bubbling. Longer sunny periods will make it easier for British winemakers to make quality wines.
A recent study from the London School of Economics finds that climate change is also expanding the area in England suitable for making wine. Most vineyards (葡萄园) are in south-east England but more land as far north as the east Midlands could come into use. Alistair Nesbitt, the study’s lead author, says that by 2040 higher temperatures may also allow winemakers to grow more disease-resistant varieties of grapes.
As a result, a mini land rush is under way. According to Strutt & Parker, a consultancy, Britain has over 900 vineyards, up by 80% in the past five years. Essex, Sussex and Kent are of most interest to winemakers. This summer Jackson Family Wines, an American firm, became the first big maker of wines to invest in England; it plans to acquire around 26 hectares (公顷) in Essex. London clay, a mud found in high concentrations in the county, is ideal for producing bold red wine.
Nick Watson of Strutt & Parker says that the prices of established vineyards have increased sharply and that land suitable for viticulture (葡萄栽培) now sells for 40,000-50,000 per hectare. Such prices pale next to those in famed wine regions abroad: in Bordeaux land can fetch over 1.6m a hectare. The difference has little to do with the quality of the soil and much to do with a region’s reputation.
Other aspects of climate change are less welcome for winemakers. A year of heavy rain or severe drought could destroy entire crops. John Atkinson, a winemaker in Essex, says that making good wine all comes down to the soil, the weather and the barrel. “Growing grapes in this country is a bit like playing cricket,” he says, “There are so many ways to be out.”
24. According to the first two paragraphs, climate change has led to __________.
A. a change in the nutrition of grapes
B. the expansion of suitable land for vineyards
C. longer sunny periods in the Champagne region
D. improved skills of British winemakers in wine making
25. The author uses the example of Jackson Family Wines in paragraph 3 to show __________.
A. London clay is ideal for grape growth
B. Essex is the best place for wine making

D. the global wine market is experiencing significant growth
26. What does the underlined word “pale” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Drop sharply. B. Appear more obvious.
C. Look normal. D. Seem less impressive.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Rise of English Viticulture
B. Invest in the UK Wine Industry
C. Sing the Praises of Climate Change
D. Growing Popularity of British Wines

Soda bottles and sour cream containers—these plastics (and many others) typically arrive at recycling plants mixed together in the same bin. But because they are made of different molecular (分子的) building blocks, called monomers, they must be sorted into different streams before they can be melted to make new products. Otherwise, their various monomers tend to separate from one another like oil and water.
“Until about a year ago, everybody thought the only thing you could do is take a plastic, break it down to a monomer and then reform it,” says Sanat Kumar, a chemical engineer at Columbia University. “Now we’ve come up with a different way of doing it.” His team has developed a process that allows different kinds of plastic to be recycled together. Their findings, reported recently in Nature, could give new life to many items that end up in landfills.
The new process solves the problem by adding chemicals called universal dynamic cross-linkers to the mix. Just as soap brings together oil and water, these cross-linkers form covalent (共价的) molecular bonds that tie the diverse monomers together. This process creates materials that can keep certain useful properties of each plastic, such as keeping oxygen from passing through. These materials can then be melted and remade again and again because the cross-linkers can break and re-form their bonds.
The researchers hope the technique could eventually help repurpose more plastic waste, and Kumar says the process consumes less energy than breaking plastics down into their original monomers—but it’s not yet cheap enough to be widely used at existing recycling facilities. Still, showing that it works could lead to profitable markets for less expensive recycled plastics, which Kumar says would be one way to help recyclers eventually address the plastic waste crisis. “The plastics problem is huge,” he says, “and you’re going to have to look for multiple solutions.”
28. What’s the first paragraph mainly about
A. The recycling method of plastics.
B. The present situation of plastic pollution.
C. The difficulty of recycling mixed plastics.
D. The variety in monomers among different plastics.
29. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Sorting out plastics. B. Recycling plastics.
C. Breaking down plastics. D. Melting plastics.
30. What is special about universal dynamic cross-linkers
A. They can be used as soap to bond oil and water.
B. They can keep oxygen from passing through.
C. They can maintain their own useful properties.
D. They can help bring different monomers together.
31. What challenge is Sanat Kumar’s technique facing
A. Its relatively high cost. B. Its low efficiency.
C. Its negative environmental effect. D. Its high energy consumption.
D
Almost every day I’ve been having an alarming number of “what planet am I on ” moments. This is particularly true when it comes to the topic of artificial intelligence.
Witness this headline from the New York Times: “The Godfather of A.I. Warns of Danger Ahead.” Here’s another one, from the New York Post: “Ex-Google Exec Mo Gawdat Warns AI Could Create ‘Killing Machines.’” But don’t worry! Here’s more, from CNBC: “An Annual Meeting Attended by the World’s Elite (精英) Has A.I. Top of the Agenda.” These unaccountable, largely unelected rich people are apparently ready to solve the problems of this mad world. The assumption, it appears, is that this “honored” group has it all under control, which is funny given that the crazed AI cat is already miles out of its torn bag. I’ll say it again: What planet am I on
But my friends, who decided all this, anyway Who made AI king The answer is nobody, and also everybody, I guess. No one’s really in charge, and if we’re honest with each other, there is not a thing anyone can do. As to me, I do try. I don’t upload my photos to the cloud. I don’t engage with ChatGPT, and I never use facial recognition on my phone—but my husband does both. “You’re feeding the beast!” I tell him. “Who cares ” he usually replies, “It’s happening with or without us.”
Maybe AI will make it a lot easier to re-book airline tickets with flight credits that you unwillingly earned when the airline canceled your flight home from your ski vacation. Just kidding—of course it won’t. But in all seriousness, I’m sure AI will make the government completely efficient. Ha! Got you again! Sometimes I like to think back to the 90’s, when sizeable numbers of smart people were all complaining about the “end of history” and the general assumption was that things in the future would get ever more sensible. It all seems kind of funny now, doesn’t it
Here’s the good news: I just made my husband read this column, and he finally agreed to disable facial recognition on his phone. The bad news: I think it requires facial recognition to get it done.
32. The underlined sentence in paragraph 2 implies that __________.
A. we should dismiss AI warnings from experts
B. AI technology has made significant advancements
C. negative impacts of AI have become uncontrollable
D. the world is amazed by the rapid development of AI
33. By mentioning her husband in paragraph 3, the author intends to __________.
A. criticize him for misusing AI
B. urge readers to resist the use of AI
C. demonstrate the possibility of being slave to AI
D. present a common perspective people have on AI
34. According to the passage, what is the author most likely to agree with
A. AI makes the world more sensible.
B. AI doesn’t live up to our expectations.
C. AI makes the government less efficient.
D. AI can solve the complex problems humans are facing.
35. What is the author’s tone in the text
A. Confident. B. Ironic. C. Proud. D. Dismissive.

Lions are often incorrectly called the “king of the jungle”. These days, the giant cats are not feared as much as another “super predator (捕食者)”—the animals living in South Africa now fear humans more than lions, according to a study published recently. ____36____
The study focused on Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa. Scientists set up speakers and cameras around 21 waterholes in the dry season between June and August. The researchers chose the site since waterholes are known as a small pool of water where animals drink. ____37____ This makes waterholes a popular hunting spot for both lions and poachers (偷猎者).
During the experiment, the researchers played different sounds. These included lions roaring, and humans speaking calmly in local languages. The study found that animals were twice as likely to run away from a human voice than a lion sound. ____38____ The results suggest that animals have learned that being close to humans can be dangerous because they might be poachers. This could pose a problem to national parks that depend on making money from safari tourism. ____39____
____40____ Endangered species, such as the southern white rhino (犀牛), could be protected by using recorded human voices. For instance, rhinos abandon waterholes much quicker when they hear human voices over other sounds, which could help to drive the frightened species away from places where poachers are known to lie in wait.
A. Visitors might scare the animals away when approaching them.
B. The animals at the waterhole included elephants, giraffes and rhinos.
C. The sounds could keep them away from areas popular with poachers.
D. However, the findings might be very useful for wildlife conservation.
E. Roughly 95 percent of the animals there are more scared of human voices.
F. Animals also abandoned the waterholes 40% faster when they heard human noises.
G. At this time of year, animals come here to drink as other sources of water disappear.

Sometimes, the support and encouragement that we give each other can spread and truly change people’s lives. In the case of one Florida student David Smith, the support of a local network of strangers and his school made memories he will never forget.
When Laura Snyder, an elementary school teacher at Altamonte Elementary School, celebrated “College Colors Day” with her class, David melted her heart.
Despite being a devoted fan of the University of Tennessee (UT) sports teams, he did not own any official merchandise (货品) and resorted to his creativity to show his support. The young student drew the school’s logo on a piece of paper, and attached it to an orange T-shirt to resemble (相似于) the school colors of the UT sports teams.
“When the day finally arrived, he was so excited to show me his shirt,” Snyder revealed on Facebook. “I was impressed that he took it one step further to make his own label.”
Unfortunately, by mid-day, David was in tears.
“At lunch, some girls made fun of his sign that he had attached to his shirt. He felt extremely depressed. He has lost his former confidence and smile, and rarely talks about his favorite sports team.” said Snyder.
Determined to make the situation right Snyder went on Facebook with the hope of reaching the staff members from the university. Though she originally just planned to get David some official merchandise, what happened next took everyone by surprise.
In a week, the post had gained so much attention that tens of thousands of people had shared the story, standing up for the student, who had been bullied (霸凌) at school. Tennessee fans from all over the country poured in with comments of support and encouragement, and soon the university even got in touch to send the boy an official package of merchandise, including T-shirts, hats, pens, towels, and water bottles.
When the package arrived at the office, Snyder called David in.

M: Why I love it. I have fallen in love with caffeine.
W: It’s not just the caffeine, but the amount of sugar that’s in soft drinks. All that sugar and caffeine aren’t good for you.
M: Oh, I know it. But I just can’t stop. I’ve had this caffeine habit for years.
W: It sounds as if you’ve got a real problem. Have you ever been to a doctor or tried to get help
M: I never have. I’ve thought about it, but just can’t take the time.
W: What are you doing after work I’ll take you to a place that can help you.
M: You seem to know a lot about addictive habits.
W: I do. I used to drink five Cokes a day myself.

M: Of course. Before doing any outdoor photography, you should consider three basic things: the best time to go out, where to look for your subjects, and, of course, what equipment to carry with you.
W: All I have is a 35-mm camera and a 50-mm lens.
M: Well, your camera is exactly what you want out in the field, because it’s light and easy to work with. However, you should think about getting yourself a special lens for close-ups of animals and another for scenery.
W: My goodness! I didn’t realize I’d need so much equipment.
M: There are certain basic articles you need. I could lend you a few to help you.
W: Oh, no. I can never borrow your equipment. I’d be so afraid of breaking it.
M: In that case, I’ll sell it to you for a reasonable price, and you can pay for it by working here on Saturdays. Then you’d have the opportunity not only to get some equipment but to learn a few things as well.
W: Thank you so much.

There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is still the most traditional, at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world.
Here are four of them. There are many “floating markets” in Asia; perhaps the most unusual is in Thailand, at a place called Damnoen Saduak. It’s open from six in the morning to noon every day. People sell fresh fruit from their boats. Many Belgians say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. It is the home of a colorful flower market. It’s open every day except Monday. On Monday, instead of flowers, there’s a wonderful bird market! One of the world’s most famous markets is in Mexico City—the Sonora Market. Here, you can buy toys, birds, herbs and medicines. There are all kinds of things. It’s open every day from early in the morning till late at night. In England, every weekend, thousands of young people from all over London travel to the Camden Market—it’s the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there just for fun.

C. investments in vineyards in England are increasing
D. the global wine market is experiencing significant growth
26. What does the underlined word “pale” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Drop sharply. B. Appear more obvious.
C. Look normal. D. Seem less impressive.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Rise of English Viticulture
B. Invest in the UK Wine Industry
C. Sing the Praises of Climate Change
D. Growing Popularity of British Wines
B 25. C 26. D 27. A
根据前两段内容尤其是第二段“A recent study from the London School of Economics finds that climate change is also expanding the area in England suitable for making wine. Most vineyards (葡萄园) are in south-east England but more land as far north as the east Midlands could come into use. ”(伦敦经济学院最近的一项研究发现,气候变化也扩大了英国适合酿酒的地区。大多数葡萄园都在英格兰东南部,但更多的土地,甚至远至北部的英格兰中部东部,都可以投入使用。)可知,根据前两段内容,我们可以了解到气候变化导致适合种植葡萄园的土地扩大。故选B项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“As a result, a mini land rush is under way. London clay, a mud found in high concentrations in the county, is ideal for producing bold red wine.”(因此,一场小规模的土地抢购正在进行。
根据第四段“Nick Watson of Strutt & Parker says that the prices of established vineyards have increased sharply and that land suitable for viticulture (葡萄栽培) now sells for 40,000-50,000 per hectare.”(Strutt&Parker的Nick Watson表示,成熟葡萄园的价格急剧上涨,适合葡萄栽培的土地现在每公顷售价为4-5万英镑。)和划线单词句中“in Bordeaux land can fetch over 1.6m a hectare.”(在波尔多,每公顷土地可以卖到160多万英镑。)以及下文“The difference has little to do with the quality of the soil and much to do with a region’s reputation.”(这种差异与土壤质量没有多大关系,而与一个地区的声誉有很大关系。)
根据文章大意以及第二段“A recent study from the London School of Economics finds that climate change is also expanding the area in England suitable for making wine. Most vineyards (葡萄园) are in south-east England but more land as far north as the east Midlands could come into use. ”(伦敦经济学院最近的一项研究发现,气候变化也扩大了英国适合酿酒的地区。大多数葡萄园都在英格兰东南部,但更多的土地,甚至远至北部的英格兰中部东部,都可以投入使用。)可知,文章主要讲的是气候变化扩大了英国适合酿酒的地区,同时也导致适合种植葡萄园的土地扩大。故文章最好的标题是“英国葡萄栽培的兴起”。故选A项。

C 29. B 30. D 31. A

根据第一段“Soda bottles and sour cream containers—these plastics (and many others) typically arrive at recycling plants mixed together in the same bin. But because they are made of different molecular (分子的) building blocks, called monomers, they must be sorted into different streams before they can be melted to make new products. Otherwise, their various monomers tend to separate from one another like oil and water.”(汽水瓶和酸奶油容器——这些塑料(以及许多其他塑料)通常被混在同一个垃圾箱里送到回收厂。
根据第二段中“His team has developed a process that allows different kinds of plastic to be recycled together.”(他的团队开发了一种工艺,可以将不同种类的塑料一起回收利用。)
根据第三段中“The new process solves the problem by adding chemicals called universal dynamic cross-linkers to the mix.
A. Confident. B. Ironic. C. Proud. D. Dismissive.
C 33. D 34. B 35. B

根据第二段中“These unaccountable, largely unelected rich people are apparently ready to solve the problems of this mad world. The assumption, it appears, is that this “honored” group has it all under control, which is funny given that the crazed AI cat is already miles out of its torn bag.”(这些不负责任的、大部分未经选举的富人显然已经准备好解决这个疯狂世界的问题。

E 37. G 38. F 39. A 40. D

故填which。
be bound for“开往……”。故填for。
a total of“总数为……”。故填a。

be thought to do sth.“被认为做某事”。 故填to have declined。
故填has led。

Determined to make the situation right, Snyder went on Facebook with the hope of reaching the staff members from the university.

When the teacher told him how her Facebook post about him caught so much attention and support, he was on the verge of tears. Snyder patted him on the shoulder, reassuring him that someone would always stand up for him. A smile reemerged on his face as he proudly put on one of the T-shirts and returned to the classroom with the remaining merchandise.
Paragraph 2:
Wearing a big smile, David walked into the classroom, followed by Snyder. Seeing David wearing his new UT T-shirt and holding so much official merchandise, his classmates crowded around him eagerly and asked where he got them. Snyder seized this opportunity to teach the class an important lesson about empathy and standing up for others. After she the whole story, silence fell over the classroom. Unexpectedly, David walked around, distributing the merchandise to his classmates. The room was filled with high fives and hugs as the kids expressed their gratitude. “This experience is uniting my class more than I could have imagined and they’ve seen the impact of support and encouragement! ” Snyder said.
