Parents everywhere are praising one Florida mom after she showed her daughter true love earlier this month in a lesson about being grateful. Haley Hassel was shopping for back-to-school supplies. She wanted to surprise her daughter Presleigh with a pencil case, which she knew her daughter would be happy about. Hassel was surprised, however, when her little girl threw the case in the garbage and stormed into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
“She yelled, ‘That’s stupid. Everyone in my class has that...I don’t want it anymore!’” Hassel explained in a Facebook post. Hassel said she didn’t immediately react because she wanted to deal with the anger properly.
“So by the time there was probably smoke coming out of my ears, I was trying really hard not to completely lose it with this kid whom I have worked so hard to completely take care of on my own,” she wrote. “I thought I had always taught her to be grateful and know how lucky she was, but she needed a small wake up call!”
Hassel grabbed a plastic sandwich bag, wrote Presleigh’s name on it and handed it to her.
“I told her to get the pencil case out of the trash and that we would give it to one whose mommy and daddy don’t have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mommy or daddy.”

Instagram has launched (发布) a machine learning technology to its app that better identifies self-harm and suicide (自杀) content in the UK after tragic death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl Molly Russell, who viewed Instagram content connected to anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide before ending her own life in November 2017.
Molly’s family later found she had been viewing content on social media, particularly pictures on Instagram, linked to anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide, which her father, Ian Russell, believed to “help to kill her.” Ian has demanded that web companies should take more responsibility for filtering (过滤) harmful content from the Internet, which may possibly contribute to more young people’s deaths.
Concerns have been raised about self-harm and suicide content online, especially how platforms deal with such content and its impact on certain users, young people in particular. Social media platforms are now increasingly being pressured to develop technology to help remove harmful content as quickly as possible, rather than waiting for users to report it.
Now, the new tool from Instagram automatically searches for suicide-related images and words on the platform. It then makes the content less visible (可见的) in the app or, in some cases, removes it completely after 24 hours if the machine learning decides it breaks the app’s safety rules.
Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said, “Our technology finds posts that may include suicide or self-harm content and sends them to human reviewers to make the final decision and take the right action.” Between April and June this year, around 90 percent of such kind of harmful content on Instagram was found by its own technology before any real user reported it to the platform. “But our goal is to get that number as close as we possibly can to 100 percent,” Mosseri added. “And I hope this could in some way help avoid tragic deaths like Molly Russell’s.”
28. What does Molly’s father mean by saying “help to kill her”
A. Someone on Instagram helped her to kill herself.
B. She was suffering from cyberbully on Instagram.
C. Content on Instagram had negative effects on her.
D. She didn’t get any help from social media.
29. What can we learn from the last three paragraphs
A. Social media platforms are all taking action to remove harmful content from the Internet.
B. Users can report harmful content online to the platform if they see any.
C. All images and words that the new technology finds will be completely removed.
D Instagram has already achieved their goal to find 100 percent of harmful content in its app.
30. What is Adam Mosseri’s attitude towards the development of their new technology
A. Negative. B. Positive.
C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. A new technology brought out by Instagram after a teenager’s death
B. A schoolgirl’s tragic death after viewing harmful content online

It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
32. What did the new research find
A. Running fast benefits all of us.
B. Running is the best exercise.
C. A short time run can be beneficial.
D. A healthy mind encourages us to run.
33. How did the researchers get the result
A. By using different drugs on participants.
B. By interviewing some sportsmen.
C. By collecting information on the Internet.
D. By doing experiments and comparisons.
34. Which is related to our happiness
A. Cycling. B. Medicine. C. Blood flow. D. Colors.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. We should go for a run in winter.
B. Running really benefits us mentally.
C. We don’t need a lot of exercise.
D. Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. B

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed (叹气) as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and even tried surfing. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city far away from Sadie’s.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. She didn’t really want to watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself. I want to play with a friend.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try ”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】 Sadie thought about her mom’s words and returned to her room. Considering for a while, she took the story she started last month from her desk drawer and began to write. Some scenes she took down were so interesting that she laughed out loud. When she stopped and looked at the clock, she found she had been writing for 30 minutes. Sadie decided to go outside for a breath of fresh air. With her mom's permission, she got on her bike and rode slowly down the sidewalk. It felt great! Much to her surprise, scenery along the path was breathtaking, which used to escape her notice when she hung out with friends.
As she rode back home, Sadie ran toward her mom excitedly. “Did you find someone to play with outside ” Mom asked. “No, I took your advice. I rode my bike by myself.” Wendy called back while you were outside, asking you to go swimming tonight. You will have a happy evening,” Sadie's mom said. “Well, I think I will finish my story instead. I can go swimming with her another day,” Sadie said with a wink. “And it's indeed very different and surprising to do things alone.”

She continued, “I explained to her she’s not entitled to (享有) anything special and she is taking for granted how lucky she is. So for now she will be using a bag and will personally be delivering the nice box to a child that could benefit from it.”

So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better probably more than other fitness activities.
