Some people can be pretty anxious about their first airplane flight alone, but 16-year-old Ashley was even more nervous.
Since the teen was born deaf, she was worried that her deafness would prevent her from receiving any details about her flight from Baltimore, Maryland to Rochester, New York. To make matters worse, she had a connecting flight from the big JFK International Airport, which can be an extremely busy airport for even the most experienced fliers. “I felt nervous because… what if I miss my flight ” Ashley told WJLA through an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter (口译员).
Thankfully, Ashley had a safe and successful flight—and thanks to a kind flight attendant (乘务员), it was also a particularly memorable one. Shortly after Ashley’s plane took off from Baltimore, her Delta airline flight attendant handed her a handwritten note which explained everything about the flight and safety information. Ashley told reporters that she had never experienced such kindness before, and the note, which she now plans to keep forever, meant the world to her.
Delta later responded to the story by praising their flight attendant for her communication and announcing their plans to make airline travel more helpful for deaf passengers. Over the course of the next few months, airline attendants who can speak ASL will be encouraged to wear a sign that will identify them to passengers. “With this improvement, customers will immediately be able to recognize when they hold sign language as a common connection,” a Delta spokesperson told WJLA.

A. Having no ASL interpreter. B. Missing the connecting flight.
C. Taking a plane to travel alone. D. Having to change planes at a big airport.

7. What can be the suitable title for the text

Blue whales are the largest creatures to live on Earth after the dinosaurs. These amazing creatures are not only the largest whale species but also the largest mammal (哺乳动物) species to have ever existed on Earth.
The average length of a blue whale is 23—27 meters and its weight is from 100 to 150 tons. In spite of their large size, blue whales can swim at a fast speed of 25 to 30 miles per hour. The blue whales are not really blue in color but are actually gray. Blue whales feed on krill (磷虾). They take in a lot of water. They have a very unique way of communicating with each other by sending low frequency sound waves, which is even higher than the sound produced by a plane.
Before the whale hunting time started, blue whales could be found in all major oceans. Once, there were more than 200,000 blue whales that swam in the oceans. The Seas of Canada, North Atlantic Ocean and the seas to the south of Madagascar are among the most popular regions where blue whales can be found nowadays. Other major parts are the Antarctic Ocean and the Davis Strait.
Early whaling was limited by simple tools and whaling skills. So the damage to whale populations was not great. But with the development of powerful guns and steam-powered boats, whaling advanced. More whales were hunted at a rapid rate. In 1931 alone, 29,649 whales were killed. Humans competed to hunt the big animals. Besides, the number of blue whales is low due to more man’s deep-sea activities.
Fortunately, officials are doing something great about the blue whales. The International Whaling Commission has taken steps to protect these wonderful mittees of experts have been formed to work against whaling.
12. How do blue whales communicate
A. By swimming fast. B. By delivering food. C. By touching each other. D. By sending sound signals.

4. What made the travel even harder for Ashley
A. Having no ASL interpreter. B. Missing the connecting flight.
C. Taking a plane to travel alone. D. Having to change planes at a big airport.
5. How did Ashley feel after receiving the note from the attendant
A. Nervous. B. Moved. C. Relaxed. D. Calm.
6. Why are attendants who can speak ASL encouraged to wear signs
A. To be recognized easily. B. To improve their image.
C. To show off their abilities. D. To be praised by their leaders.
7. What can be the suitable title for the text
A. A Written Note to an Airline B. Teenager’s First Travel by Plane

More whales were hunted at a rapid rate. In 1931 alone, 29,649 whales were killed. Humans competed to hunt the big animals. Besides, the number of blue whales is low due to more man’s deep-sea activities.

In fact, Steve not only became an expert at all kinds of skills but he was also good at cheating because he couldn’t stand losing to anyone. He became so skilled at cheating that he could play practically and win any game by cheating without even being noticed. Every time he beat other boys, he would be proud to see others admiring him and praising his excellent skills. He enjoyed that feeling.
No one wants to play with someone who is always going to win. As time went by, almost no one around Steve wanted to play with him. But there was one poor boy named Tom who would always play with him. At first, Tom had few skills and Steve beat him easily. Gradually, Tom learnt more skills. It was still a piece of cake for Steve to beat him. One day Steve found that Tom became more skilled and it was a challenge to win the game with Tom. In order to win, Steve used his tricks. Tom was defeated. Since then, the tricks helped Steve win any game. Although Tom lost face, he would always accept Steve’s challenge. Champion Steve enjoyed himself at poor Tom’s expense and always made that poor boy look funny as he lost.
One day, Steve got bored with just playing around and thought that he could win bigger games. So he decided to apply for video game championship as he thought that there he would find some top players that could match him.

【答案】 At the Cham pionship, he was excited to have a chance to show off his skills. When the competition started, everyone made all their efforts to play best. Steve also tried all means to play but just then he realized that he couldn’t make it. That was because he had got used to using cheats and tricks. Although he was a good player, without his usual tricks, he could not make it to beat anyone. He felt awkward. Soon he had to leave the competition. He sat there, sad and ashamed.
Finally the competition ended and the champion name was called out. Steve was surprised to know that it was the “poor” boy Tom who won the title. Steve couldn’t believe it. After all, he had always beaten Tom before. Then he thought a lot and realized Tom had learned quite a lot from failures and made great progress. From then on, Steve decided to give up the desire of winning all the time. He was quite happy to lose sometimes, because that was when he would learn and improve his skills.
