A Natural History of the Future
Over the past century, humans have made great technological achievements with which we have found ways to control nature. From river dams (大坝)to huge one-crop fields, we continue to try to change nature for our goals so much that it seems we may be in danger of influencing it seriously.
In A Natural History of the Future, biologist Rob Dunn thinks that nothing could be further from the truth: rather than asking whether nature will let us live, we’d better ask whether we will let nature last. Although we try our best, or worst, to control the biological world, life has its own laws, and no matter what man does, he cannot change them.
Explaining several basic laws of ecology (生态), Dunn shows why life cannot be stopped. We grow one single crop on the field, only to find new life appearing to attack them. We throw away poisonous (有毒的) waste, only to find microbes (微生物) taking it over. And even in the London Tube, we have seen a new type of mosquito appear to take advantage of a place that is clearly not fit to live. Life will not follow our plans. Instead, Dunn shows us the future of living things and the challenges that the next generation may face.
A Natural History of the Future sets a new standard for understanding the different kinds of life and our future as a kind of creature.

A Portland, Oregon man has become the first person to travel across Antarctica by himself without receiving any assistance.
Colin O’Brady has completed the 1,500-kilometer trip. He crossed the continent in 54 days. Friends, family and other people followed his progress through messages and pictures he left on social media.
O’Brady spoke with his wife Jenna Besaw by telephone soon after he completed the journey. “It was an emotional call,” she said. “He seemed overwhelmed by love and appreciation, and he really wanted to say ‘thank you’ to all of us.”
The 33-year-old O’Brady documented the trip on the social networking services Instagram. He called his journey “The Impossible First”. He wrote that he traveled the last 129 kilometers in one big, final push to the finish line. The distance took over one day to complete. O’Brady wrote, “While the last 32 hours were some of the most challenging hours of my life, they have quite honestly been some of the best moments I have ever experienced.”
The day before, he wrote that he was “in the zone” and thought he could make it to the end without stopping. “I was listening to my body and taking care of the details to keep myself safe,” he wrote. “I called home and talked to my mom, sister and wife. I promised them I would stop when I need to.”
Other people have traveled across Antarctica, but they all had some form of assistance. They either had better, more plentiful supplies or devices that helped move them forward.
In 2016, British explorer Henry Worsley died in his attempt to travel alone across Antarctica unassisted. Worsley’s friend Louis Rudd, also from Britain, is attempting an unaided solo journey in Worsley’s honor. He was competing against O’Brady to be the first to do it. Besaw told the Associated Press that her husband plans to stay in Antarctica until Rudd finishes his trip.

A. It was pleasant. B. It was discouraging.
C. It was impossible to complete. D. It was hard to complete.
5. What did O’Brady promise his family
A. Making sure of his safety. B. Trying to achieve the goal.
C. Keeping in touch with them. D. Stopping the travel halfway.
6. Why does O’Brady still remain in Antarctica
A. To wait for another explorer. B. To compete with others.
C. To help other explorers. D. To make his victory recognized.
7. What might be a suitable title for the text
A. The Antarctic Continent B. The Impossible First

Heading soccer balls seems to take greater injuries on women than on men, according to a new study which focused on the brains of soccer players.
Head knocks can really hurt the brain. Female athletes tend to suffer more brain damage than males do after injuries, the study points out. But until now, no one had directly compared damage in men and women after heading balls.
Michael Lipton, a brain-imaging expert at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NewYork City, led the research. He noted, “It’s important to figure out how males and females might be different after brain injury. Hopefully, determining how the sexes differ after brain damage will help choose better treatments for each.”
Researchers chose 98 soccer players from amateur teams. The players estimated how often they had headed a ball in the past year. The average headers among men were 487 while women 469. The researchers then studied the brain scans of each player looking for signs of damage. They used a special type of scan to highlight changes in the brain’s white matter. White matter is made up of fibers (纤维), which carry electrical signals from nerve cells in one part of the brain to those in another. So damage to white matter affects how well the brain works. The scans turned up more widespread brain damage in the female players. In women, eight regions showed potential damage linked to frequent headers. In men, only three regions did.
The brain changes studied here weren’t big enough to cause brain damage. But repeated blows to the brain can contribute to memory loss, depression and other problems. One bigger concern is CTE, which can lead to confusion, trouble remembering things and emotional outbursts. Researchers don’t know why women’s brains appear at greater risk. Differences in their heads and necks may play a role. So might genetics and hormones.
8. What does the new study focus on
A. Comparison of brain damage between sexes. B. Causes of brain injuries among players.
C. Functions of white matter in our brain. D. Effect of repeated blows on athletes.
9. Why did Michael Lipton’s team carry out the study
A. To find out the differences between men and women. B. To contribute to treatments for brain injury.
C. To prevent soccer players from getting hurt. D. To make a breakthrough in soccer skill study.
10. How was the research carried out
A. By interviewing soccer players. B. By studying the brain scans.
C. By using a computer model. D. By referring to former studies.
11. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. It is hard to identify brain damage. B. The study proves to be a total failure.
C. Reasons for brain damage remains unclear. D. Mental problems cause physical differences.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. C

Technology has changed almost every way of our life and now it seems to be the time to update education systems around the world. Children and young adults make up one-third of the Internet users, so it’s no surprise that they are more hyper-connected (超连接的) than their parents.
In a survey of 1,400 educators, most of them believe that classrooms of the future will be centered on personalized learning. This student-centered way will allow children to choose their own pace (节奏) and learning goals based on personal interests, all of which can be guided by artificial intelligence (AI), chatting robots (chatbots) and video-based learning.
AI in education specially focuses on telling what a student does or doesn’t know, and then develops personalized courses for each student. Chatbots are also quickly becoming a key tool in the next generation education. Designed to simplify the exchange of ideas and information between students and computers, chatbots provide a lot of benefits. Although video-based learning may not necessarily be considered as creative as AI or chatbots, 98% of the educators view it as an important part of personalized learning experiences. Some schools report bringing video teaching into their courses in some way, but even higher demand for video-based learning may come from students in the near future.
The new classroom learning style is completely different from the traditional learning style and is considered to be a great change in how students get information. However, research has shown that children will keep getting information from books besides screens. Obviously, low-tech schools are more likely to believe that human interaction is important when it comes to keeping children interested and excited to learn.
Although we may not be in the age of online teachers, the benefits of technology as a teaching aid are true. However, what’s more important is that these aids are helping keep students rather than technology at the heart of education.
12. What will future classrooms focus on according to the survey
A. Self-paced learning. B. Learning without goals.
C. The teacher-centered way. D. The traditional learning way.
13. What are chatbots used to do
A. Create wealth. B. Train educators.
C. Improve communication. D. Develop courses.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. Low-tech schools are on the rise.
B. Children will completely depend on screens.
C. The way to get information should be changed.
D. Students will still get information from books.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Why education is s important.
B. How robots will replace teachers.
C. How technology shapes the future education.
D. Why computers will play a role in the future education.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. C

Many of the vegetables we grow in our gardens produce seeds (种子), which can grow into plants if collected and stored correctly. Late summer is the perfect time to start collecting them.
Make sure the seeds are from plants that you have planted well for many years. These are plants in their normal forms.____16____
Hybridized (杂交) plants usually produce the vegetables sold in big food stores. They are created from two or more different kinds of plants to get the best qualities of each. Trying to grow seeds from these plants will not lead to happy results. This kind of plants will not have the expected results but instead carry the genes (基因) of just one of its parents.____17____For this reason, it is best not to grow seeds from store-bought food.
Many plants become cross-pollinated (异花授粉) in the garden. Bees, flies, animals and wind spread pollen (花粉) from one plant to another. To ensure the seeds will grow into plants, give them space. ____18____
To avoid cross-pollination surprises, plant only one kind of each vegetable from which you can harvest seeds.____19____Grow only one kind of tomato in your garden. If that feels too limiting, go ahead and experiment. Choose plants that grow well every year so there are smaller risks from cross-pollination. The plants will be fine even if they are not what you expected.
____20____Add something to the container to prevent any remaining wetness. But take it out after a few days to avoid over drying the seeds.
A. When will the seeds come off the flower
B It is impossible to tell which parent that will be.
C. What should you do if you want to save tomato seeds
D. Their seeds will produce plants as good as their parents.
E. Put seeds in a cool, dry place in a covered glass container.
F. Place different kinds of the same crop as far apart as possible.
G. In areas with cold winters, simply leave plants in the ground over winter.
【答案】16. D 17. B 18. F 19. C 20. E

【导语】本文为一篇说明文。主要讲述了如何收集花园里种植的蔬菜的种子。
【16题详解】
根据空前“Make sure the seeds are from plants that you have planted well for many years. These are plants in their normal forms.(确保这些种子来自于你种植了很多年的植物。这些都是正常形态的植物)”可知,空前提到你在收集花园里种植的蔬菜的种子时,应该选择你种植了很多年的种子,故此空应该提到其结果,故D项“这些种子就会种植出和它们的基因一样好的植物。”符合语境,空前提出要选择种植了很多年的种子,此空说明其结果,会种植出和它们基因一样好的植物,故选D项。
【17题详解】
根据空前“This kind of plants will not have the expected results but instead carry the genes (基因) of just one of its parents.(这类植物不会带来预期的结果,而是携带了其中一个亲本的基因)”可知,空前提出不要从商店出售的蔬菜中去获取种子,因为这些蔬菜都是杂交植物,而且这些植物只携带了其中的一个亲本基因,故B项“弄清楚它属于哪种基因是极其重要的。”符合语境,顺义承接前文,这些植物只携带了其中的一种亲本基因,因此要弄清楚它到底属于那种基因,故选B项。
【18题详解】
根据空前“Bees, flies, animals and wind spread pollen(花粉)from one plant to another. To ensure the seeds will grow into plants, give them space.(蜜蜂、苍蝇、动物和风将花粉从一种植物传播到另一种植物上。为了确保种子能长成植物,应该给它们一定的空间)”可知,空前提出了花园里异花授粉的方式,有蜜蜂、苍蝇等将花粉从一种植物传播到另一种植物上,为了确保他们生产,需要给它们空间,故F项“将不同种类的同一作物尽可能分开放置。”符合,因为它们生产需要空间,故尽可能将它们分开放置,故选F项。
【19题详解】
根据空前“To avoid cross-pollination surprises, plant only one kind of each vegetable from which you can harvest seeds.(为了避免异花授粉的意外,每种蔬菜只种一种,这样你就能收获种子)”以及空后“Grow only one kind of tomato in your garden.(花园里只种一种番茄)”可知,空前提到为了避免异花授粉,建议只种一种蔬菜从而获得种子,空后举出例子只种一种番茄,故C项“如果想要保存番茄籽,你该怎们办?”符合,本空提出问题,空后回答问题,故选C项。
【20题详解】
根据空后“Add something to the container to prevent any remaining wetness.(在容器里加一些东西,以防止湿气)”推知,空处提出要把种子放置干燥的地方。

Life never really turns out the way we expect it to. We have dreams and expectations. And dream-come-true stories are everywhere — except, it may seem, in our own lives.
As a child, Barbara never quite found the bond with her parents that all children need. Her father left the family early, and her mother did menial jobs.
“I couldn’t let my life keep me from caring about other people,” she says. “Maybe it’s unfair or just the way it turns out for people, but I still have a son.”
Barbara raised her son the best she knew how and “he turned out pretty well,” she says, smiling. And after the hard years of making ends meet and giving him a good start, she made a career change.
“I never thought I was supposed to feel sorry for myself,” she says. “And I like people.”
Barbara works as an in-home caregiver for elderly people in their last year of life. She spends 10-hour days, six days a week, with people who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, sometimes sleeping on their sofa when they are afraid to spend a night alone. Most don’t have families close by, and Barbara becomes the person they rely on for everything: meals, bathing, bathroom duties, daily walks if they can, mental exercises like crossword puzzles and re-learning family faces.
She only charges what the family can afford and only works with one client at a time. “They become the family I never had, over and over again,” she says, laughing.
The spaces left empty in Barbra’s childhood are filled with memories shared with her from lives fading away in the dusk. For 30 years, she has been making people feel good at a time when most would just be waiting to die, alone and unnoticed. When seeing their faces when they are with Barbara, you’d think the last years were the best.
“I’ve found something I never had,” Barbara says. “We make each other happy. So I try to give them what they want most.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 She’s learned from her experiences that old people want their loved ones to visit them. Therefore, she tries her best to give more help to the elderly and make them happier. Whenever she serves an elderly family, she will learn about their loved ones, especially their children. She will take down their home address and contact information. She will chat with them to learn about the old people’s living habits in order to better serve them. She also tells them about the old people’s current situation and encourages them to pay as many visits as possible.
I posted Barbara’s story online to call on children to visit their parents. The response to my post was positive. Many people told me they were moved by the story and told me about their experiences. Some people said that they rarely visited their parents because they were so busy at work. When their parents died, they felt very sad and pitiful, but it was too late. Others were happy to tell me that they were inspired by her story, and they now often visit their parents, who are very happy.

第一节 (共15题,每题2.5分,满分37.5分)

A Natural History of the Future
Over the past century humans have made great technological achievements with which we have found ways to control nature.

He wrote that he traveled the last 129 kilometers in one big final push to the finish line.

D

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She’s learned from her experiences that old people want their loved ones to visit them.
