My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables. When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a little bit guilty.
Coming home, my mother saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed, and I admitted Dad wanted a salad but the garden was a disaster. I didn’t want to disappoint him so I went to the store. She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some vegetables.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile, “Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”
Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father’s love of gardening.
24.Why did Christine originally promise she would do the gardening
A.She was asked by her father to do it. B.She was interested in growing vegetables.
C.She knew it was important to her father. D.She wanted to improve her gardening skills.
25.Which of the following was a problem in the garden
A.Insects destroyed the lettuce and carrots. B.Animals often dug holes in the garden.
C.The plants were given too much water. D.The vegetables were marked incorrectly.
26.Why could Christine secretly use the store-bought vegetables to make the salad
A.Her mother helped her to buy the vegetables.
B.Her mother regularly helped her to make a salad.
C.Her father couldn’t see the progress of the vegetables in his garden.
D.Her father went on a business trip at that time.
27.What did Christine learn from her experience of gardening
A.Always get ready for a rainy day. B.Don’t be disappointed by bugs.
C.Working alone produces results. D.Hard work can often be rewarding.
A team of scientists says that playing sounds underwater can get fish to return to areas with severely damaged coral reefs(珊瑚礁).In an experiment, they found fish returned after hearing recordings of the sounds like a healthy ocean reef. The research results were reported in Nature Communications.
The scientists placed underwater speakers in areas where coral had been dying in Australia’s northern Great Barrier Reef. They played the sounds over a period of about six weeks in 2017 and studied the results. The team reported that twice as many fish arrived in the areas where the sounds of healthy coral were played. The sounds also led to a 50 percent increase in the number of species present in the area, the researchers found. The researchers noted the importance of having many different kinds of fish return to the area. Different species of fish perform many activities that support the ocean environment and sea life.
Steve Simpson is a professor at the University of Exeter who helped lead the research. He explained, “Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places. They contain the sounds of many kinds of shrimp, fish and other sea creatures. Young fish listen to these sounds when they are looking for a place to settle. Reefs become extremely quiet when they suffer destruction that is usually related to human-caused pollution. Coral damage can drive shrimp and fish away. But the experiment suggested that the use of underwater loudspeakers was an effective way to get young fish to come back.”
Mark Meekan is a fish biologist. He said that the return of the fish is the first step towards seeing major improvements in reef health. “Recovery is underpinned (巩固) by fish that clean the reef and create space for corals to regrow,” he said. University of Bristol professor, Andy Radford, said the underwater sounds are a promising way to fight coral reef damage at the local community level. But he noted that other threats need to be reduced as well. These include climate change, pollution and over fishing.
28.Why can underwater speakers make fish return
A.Because the fish prefer music around their habitats.
B.Because they play sounds as a healthy reef does.
C.Because the fish know the places with them become better.
D.Because they can drive the natural enemies of fishes away.
29.What effect do different kinds of fish have on the ocean according to the text
A.Keeping the ocean’s ecological balance. B.Removing the remarkable noises.
C.Preventing the pollution caused by human. D.Driving dangerous creatures away.
30.How does the author prove the significance of this new finding
A.By quoting different authorities’ words.
B.By comparing the result with another study’s.
C.By offering many statistics.
D.By showing the detailed process of experiments.
31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Education. B.Entertainment.
C.Environment. D.Economy.
The coolest thing about the new “Futures” exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building isn’t the fact that you walk on fossils or play Minecraft with your eyeballs. The clue starts with the name, particularly the last letter: The future is plural(复数的).
“The future is not a fact but a series of decisions we make every day,” said Monica Montgomery, the founder of the museum. “And everyone has the power to shape it.”
“Futures” marks the temporary(临时的) reopening of the building. It is the Smithsonian’s second-oldest building and the one considered the first national museum in the USA, says Allison Peck, director of external affairs.
The Arts and Industries Building, which opened in 1881, firstly came up with the idea that museums are for circulating knowledge to the public, not just storehouses for private collectors or centers for research, Peck said. Many Smithsonian treasures first appeared in the building, such as an early Thomas Edison lightbulb.
“Futures”, part of the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary celebration, has more than 150 objects and ideas that combine technology, art, design and history. The exhibit employs highly descriptive labels and spreads across four halls with themes: Futures Past, Futures That Inspire, Futures That Unite, and Futures That Work.
You can communicate with the exhibits by gesturing with your hands or moving your eyes. In the rotunda(圆形大厅), artist Suchi Reddy’s “me + you” invites you to describe your vision of the future, and then translates your words into colors that can dance on its central column.
Look closely at Nettrice Gaskins’s portraits, created with artificial intelligence, and a city street map for Floyd McKissick. McKissick was the founder of Soul City, North Carolina, in the 1970s as an ideal place for black people to live.
The exhibit highlights futuristic project that is ongoing: Where will we live
32.What does the name of the exhibit indicate
A.Everyone can be involved in creating the future.
B.The exhibit is for a celebration.
C.Everyone’s future is unchangeable.
D.The exhibit is organized by the public.
33.What do we know about the Arts and Industries Building
A.It was built by private collectors.
B.It pioneered the idea of spreading knowledge.
C.It is the place where Edison once worked.
D.It is the largest national museum in the USA.
34.What can visitors do at the exhibit
A.Interact with exhibits using their body language.
B.Translate their words into colors.
C.Make a map of their cities.
D.Paint a portrait with artificial intelligence.
35.Where is the passage most probably taken from

It develops the power of the sixth sense
The sixth sense is a skill that you can know a true person’s feelings and emotions without the person being verbal about it. For example, if you ask a person how a particular food tastes, they may reply with “awesome” or “yum”. 40 . 第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Pete hated losing at anything. His parents, teachers, and many others, said he didn’t know how to lose, but the truth of it was that he couldn’t stand losing, not even at marbles (弹珠游戏). He felt so good, when he won, that he never wanted to give up that feeling; not for anything in the world. On top of that, losing made him feel precisely the opposite. It seemed to Pete that losing was the worst thing that could happen to anyone. If there was a game Pete wasn’t brilliant at, he simply wouldn’t play it. But if he was going to win he would take part, even if the game lasted only a minute. And the kind of things he was really good at, like table football, you could hardly stop him playing.
A new kid named Albert started at Pete’s school. For several days Pete watched the new guy. He was great at some things, terrible at others — to an embarrassing degree — but he enjoyed everything equally. Pete saw Albert playing basketball once. He was absolutely hopeless; he lost time after time. But that happy smile never left Albert’s face. Albert was an especially good table football player, and it didn’t take Pete and Albert long before they challenged each other to a game.
Pete prepared for the match with great seriousness. He was concentrated and intense (紧张的) . Albert, on the other hand, seemed not to be taking the thing at all seriously.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On that day, Pete’s great victory (胜利) was on everyone’s lips. But, that night, Pete didn’t feel so happy.

【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了"撒哈拉节"开幕式上的活动。
21.细节理解题。根据第一段“which takes place every year either in November or December.”

There’re many websites related to Chinese poetry where you can get what you need. Second, you’d better recite as many poems as possible and communicate more with students who are also fond of poetry. Additionally, knowing how to enter for the competition and watching several previous episodes will get you well prepared.

Best wishes,

67.Pete prepared for the match with great seriousness. He was concentrated and intense. Albert, on the other hand, seemed not to be taking the thing at all seriously. He was laughing and joking as if it was all just a game. Pete knew he was going to win, but he wanted to make sure. He used all the skills and techniques he had learned and practiced over the years.
On that day, Pete’s great victory was on everyone’s lips. But, that night, Pete didn’t feel so happy. He had won, but he hadn’t enjoyed it. He had felt a strange sense of sadness when he saw Albert’s face. Despite his loss, Albert was still happy and laughing. Pete realized that winning didn’t mean as much as he had thought if it was at the cost of someone else’s joy. From that day on, Pete began to look at losing differently; not as something to avoid, but as something to accept, and even embrace.
