The school year was almost over, and we'd be moving on to a new school for sixth grade. All the girls made autograph books and collected signatures. As I signed my classmates' books, I noticed their moms had written in them, too. Such sweet thoughts were expressed: “I couldn't be prouder of you.” “I love you. Dad and I are so proud of you.”
I asked my mother to sign mine, too. She was busy, she said, but she'd get to it later. I set the book on the kitchen table. Later that night, she handed it back to me. I was anxious to see what encouraging words she had written.
This is what I found on the page:
When a thing is first begun,
Never leave it till it's done.
Be the labor great or small,
Do it well or not at all.
Mom
No words of pride or encouragement. It was just a stupid poem-another indication to me that, if I couldn't be perfect, I wasn't good enough. I held back my tears, not expressing how I felt.
That page in that handmade book plagued me for years. In the following years, I battled perfectionism and low self-esteem and never felt good enough for most of my life.
When my mother was in her eighties and in a nursing home, I gave her a book to fill out so we could know more about her. It had tips at the top of each page and then blank space to respond. Sadly, my mother passed away soon.
After she died, I sorted out her belongings. The one thing I wanted more than anything was that book. I found it and immediately read through it, and I saw she had just filled out ten pages. But ten pages of memories were better than no pages.
What I found stopped me short. On page ten, the tip asked, “What's the best advice you got from your mom and dad ” Her response was what she had written in my autograph book. I've come to see that Mom was passing on something she found valuable in her life. A gift from her to me.
24. Why did the author ask her mother to sign
A. She did it just to follow suit. B. Her mother was a famous poet.
C. She desired it as a gift for later generations. D. She longed for encouragement from her mother.
25. How did the author feel at her mother's words in her autograph book
A. Inspired. B. Disappointed. C. Excited. D. Relieved.
26. What does the underlined word “plagued” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Punished. B. Encouraged. C. Troubled. D. Confused.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. The Price of Every Decision B. The Encouraging Words from Mom
C. Breathing Belief into Those Who Doubt D. A Misunderstanding Coming to Light
C
Farming today not only sends out greenhouse-gas but destroys wildlife habitats. Agriculture now takes up half of Earth's hospitable land surface, at the expense of these habitats. So I hope to restore current farmland to its natural state by ending the vegetation(植被)stage of crop-growing.
My PhD research at Wageningen University in the Netherlands is inspired by alternative, indoor methods of food production, such as farming leafy green vegetables vertically(垂直地)and growing meat in a laboratory. I wondered-if you can grow meat without an animal, can you grow fruit without a plant This could be done inside, which might help us to return some agricultural land to nature.
During my master's programme in agricultural engineering, I discussed indoor fruit production with my professor. He eagerly invited me to write a master's paper on the subject of growing fruits without the plant.
The main task of my PhD is to collect immature fruit or flowers from tomato plants, and try to grow the stems(茎)into healthy, high-quality tomatoes in the lab. Ultimately, we want to produce fruit from tomato undifferentiated cells from which new plant organs can grow-and skip using a plant entirely.
I had achieved some early results of my research, when I was testing different growing conditions at different stages of tomato development. The lighting is an energy-efficiency measure; we use blue and red LEDs, the best colours for photosynthesis.
Some people get excited about the possibilities of my work, but most are doubtful, which I understand. In the past, people have rushed into using food technologies, such as cage-grown chickens and the extensive use of fertilizer, without considering the potential downsides. An important part of my PhD programme will be to assess the sustainability of my method.
28. What can we learn about farming today from the first paragraph
A. It's demanding. B. It's conventional.
C. It's unsustainable. D. It's transformative.
29. How did the professor react to the author's idea of indoor fruit production
A. He expressed great enthusiasm. B. He rejected it immediately.
C. He began to do an experiment. D. He asked him to stop researching
30. Why did the author conduct an experiment on tomatoes
A. To clarify others' confusion. B. To test out his own idea.
C. To produce more tasty food. D. To voice his views on plants.
31. What is the author's attitude toward old food technologies
A. Approving. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Unclear.
D
You can get a clear picture about Deep Work by Cal Newport in 5 minutes. Deep Work tells us professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive(认知的)capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value and improve your skill. The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who develop the skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive(蓬勃发展).
The book tells us the core abilities for thriving in the new economy, which are the ability to quickly master hard things, the ability to produce a high level, in terms of both quality and speed. If you can't learn, you can't thrive. If you don't produce, you won't thrive —no matter how skilled or talented you are. If you haven't mastered deep work, you'll struggle to learn hard things. To learn hard things quickly, you must focus intensely without distraction.
The key to developing a deep work habit is to move beyond good intentions and add routines and habits to your working life designed to minimize a state of unbroken concentration. To master the art of deep work, therefore, you must take back control of your time and attention from the many entertainments on the Internet that attempt to steal them. Adopt a tool only if its positive impacts on these factors substantially outweigh its negative impacts. It's crucial that you figure out in advance what you're going to do with your evenings and weekends before they begin.
In the end of Deep Work, we can know that the ability to concentrate is a skill that gets valuable things done. If you're struggling to use your mind to its fullest capacity to create things that matter, then you'll discover, as others have before you, that depth generates a life rich with productivity and meaning.
32. What is presented in the first paragraph
A. Accurate analyses. B. Practical examples.
C. Theoretical introduction. D. Daring anticipation.
33. Who will have a particular advantage in this new economy
A. Those easy to get along well with. B. Those willing to give others a hand.
C. Those who're very skilled or talented. D. Those who're the best at what they do.
34. Which of the following can help develop a deep work habit
A. Quitting social media. B. Making a flexible schedule.
C. Forming a simple habit. D. Using on-demand distraction.
35. What is the text
A. A news report. B. An exam paper.
C. A book review. D. An economic article.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do you ever feel like life is so busy that you forget to live in the present moment 36
Try to appreciate the little things. You may be tempted to think of your life as a series of big events, and those events are important.
37 One of the easiest ways to enjoy a moment is to mindfully engage with that moment and appreciate it for what it is. You can do this in countless little ways each day to bring greater meaning and peace to every moment.
Let go of the past. 38 There's nothing wrong with enjoying your past success or learning from your past mistakes. In fact, you actually should do those things. But focusing on things that are no longer around or relevant will only cause you stress and anxiety.
39 If you're upset about something that a friend, relative, or colleague said or did, that frustration can quickly ruin an otherwise enjoyable moment. It's easy to feel angry with others when you view that person's actions from your own point of view, but it's worth considering that his or her choice made sense to that individual.
Focus on your senses. Your brain has a seemingly endless river of thoughts rushing through it at any given moment. These thoughts help you most of the time, but they can be distracting or even damaging. 40 Force your mind to dwell on(总想着)the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and physical sensations of your environment.
A. Be present in the moment.
B. Learn to see other perspectives.
C. It can be very easy to get lost in memories.
D. The best way to quiet your mind is to focus on what's observable.
E. There are many things that might distract you from enjoying a moment.
F. Our helpful how-to guide can help you fully enjoy yourself and your surroundings.
G. But don't forget life also consists of countless little moments, which are available every day.

The True Meaning of Love
“You don't want that one,” the shelter volunteer said, “He's broken. He'd been abandoned.”
“Broken Abandoned ” I asked. Had I heard her correctly I looked down at the black cat sitting on my foot. The minute I'd walked into the animal shelter's cat room, he'd been one step behind me, my shadow. I wasn't an expert, but this cat seemed friendly.
The volunteer explained, “He doesn't like anyone —not other cats, not dogs, not people.”
“I want to adopt him,” I said.
“Really ” she asked. There were several other lovely cats up for adoption, cats that would be easier for a first-time owner. “Why ”
“Because he needs a home,” I said. Then under my breath, “And because I'm broken too.”
It was 20l7. I'd been in therapy(心理治疗)for a while, but it was only recently that my therapist suggested I get an animal companion —preferably something low-maintenance, like a cat. It would be good for me. Maybe it can even help me form connections with people. I didn't know if I believed that. But I went to my local shelter.
I don't know what it was about that little black cat, but I immediately felt a connection with him. Two abandoned peas in a pod, I guess. I filled out the paperwork and left with him that afternoon.
At home I let him out of the carrier so he could explore. I watched as this little cat smelled every inch of the house. Eventually, his curiosity was satisfied, and he settled in my lap. I reached out a hesitant hand to pet him, saying, “You need my help, and I need yours”.
It took me a week to come up with a name for him. I finally settled on Mr. Bojangles, after the song about a homeless man who, even after getting into big trouble, remained happy and positive. I thought the name fitted this cat. Later I called him Bo for short.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Dear Chris,
I'm writing to invite you to join in the social practice.
Let's meet at the school gate at 8: 00 on Saturday. Our Student Union has made enough preparations for what we need in the practice. On arriving there, we'll be divided into groups to do so many types of activities. Some will be arranged to do some cleaning: others will hand out leaflets to call on people to keep everything in the community in order. After the practice, everybody is advised to write down how they feel.
I'd appreciate it if you could accept my invitation.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
【参考范文】
By the time a year passed, we'd settled into a routine. When I woke up in the morning, Bo would demand that I hold him. so he could rub his face against mine. When I got home in the evenings, Bo would meow until I picked him up. He formed a habit of staying with me the whole night, accompanying me gently. Seeing him beside me, I felt my heart was so full. I was finally able to say: “I love you, Bo.” We made it a rule to take a walk together in the park every morning, which usually made me in a good mood.
Amazingly, we both began new connections with the outer world. Accidentally, Bo made friends with other pets while taking the usual walk, thus making me have daily contact with other pet-lovers. Gradually, I made many friends. I even went climbing with them, attending a get-together party. In time, I talked with new friends and, eventually, a partner who understood my inner world. One who I was able to tell “I love you,” because of a little black cat who showed me the meaning of those words.
