B
I still remember my friends giving me the advice: Try something new. I was stressed and, of course, also on
my phone too much. I was writing about food for work, so cooking didn’t really count as a hobby anymore, nor did
reading, nor socialising, especially since all of my friends worked in my industry. I needed something in my life
that existed apart from all that.
“Maybe something you can do with your hands.” The suggestion felt like an escape exit: Maybe a hobby could
free me from my work. Cooking had once been the thing I did to relax when I got home from work, the thing I was
curious about, and the thing that made my brain away from its standard complaints. The kitchen had once been a
release, but now it was part of my professional life. It needed a replacement. A few months later, I dutifully signed
up for a ceramics (制陶艺术) class at a studio near my apartment.
At the studio, I started as a lazy learner, but after a few months I became addicted, signing up for more classes
when my term ended. I had a place to go in my free time and something to be curious about, and my goals were
unrelated to outer forces: a boss, a job, a market, a reader. Unlike with writing, my progress was quantifiable (可量
化的): Now I can make a vase this tall. Now I have made a pot. Now my handles are beautiful. Now I have made
two things that more or less look like a pair.
Finally finding a hobby that is just for my own enjoyment is a release. I enjoy having something to do that
doesn’t involve a screen and therefore feels far from the style of work to which I am most accustomed – hands
covered in clay cannot swipe (滑屏) very well. Making time for this also means carving out time, for creation and
inspiration, and also for the rest that is required for me to reflect on my life. It is something more than a new hobby.
This is the peace that everyone needs in our life.
24. What is true about the author’s current profession
A. It is also the author’s hobby.
B. It requires the author to use the phone a lot.
C. The author is popular in the cooking industry.
D. The author records and posts others’ cooking online.
25. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. The author was tired of ceramics classes.
B. The author had no goals for learning ceramics.
C. The author gradually took up ceramics as a hobby.
D. Outer forces played a part in the author’s progress in ceramics.
26. How does the author feel with the new hobby
A. Calm. B. Confident. C. Inspired. D. Energetic.
27. What’s the writing purpose of this text
A. To show the benefits of having a hobby. B. To share a story of a balance of life.
C. To introduce an interesting hobby. D. To help readers choose a new hobby.

In today’s motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated. Inspirational speakers
are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett – “Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that
disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end
in victory.
However, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words,
we fail to “fail forward”. We find ways to devalue the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to
persevere (坚持) and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered
by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism (机制). “Most of us picture ourselves
as able people, so when feedback (反馈) from others suggests the opposite, it poses a serious threat to that self-
image,” he says. “The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the outside signal, so we can keep a positive sense
of self. We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don’t really want it at
all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if you lose a
singing contest. “We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our
‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change if the process is no longer
making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect” may lead us to come to this decision prematurely, rather than hanging
on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and
pretending nothing happened, however, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.
28. Why does the author mention the speech of inspirational speakers in Paragraph 1
A. To offer an approach to handling failure.
B. To introduce a common attitude towards failure.
C. To emphasize the importance of experiencing failure.
D. To discuss the relationship between success and failure.
29. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect”
A. It does harm to our self-image. B. It pictures us as perfect people.
C. It protects us from false feedback. D. It makes us refuse negative feedback to ourselves.
30. What does the underlined word “prematurely” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Hurriedly. B. Mistakenly. C. Unhappily. D. Carelessly.
31. Which statement would the author most probably agree with
A. Get ready to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.
B. Never forget to maintain a positive sense of self.
C. Don’t quit when goals no longer make you happy.
D. Don’t escape when our self-image gets challenged.

If you plan to live another 10 years, you should expect to live in a world with machines doing things you don’t
like doing today. Even more will be done without your lifting the finger. It’s not only simple tasks such as cleaning,
laundry and dishes. High-end services previously not accessible to you will now be in your economic grasp. Your
personal robot will know you better than you know yourself. This almost unimaginable lifestyle could become
common for the public, because of the achievements of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to date and the fact
that 5G is on the way to provide.
The reasons to be fearful of AI and robotics are well-founded. AI can compete with our brains and robots can
compete with our bodies. And in many cases, they can beat us handily already. And the more time that passes, the
better these emerging technologies will become, while our own capabilities (能力) are expected to remain more or
less the same.
There has been a love-hate relationship between individuals and big companies long before the present era of
big tech, but when big tech, AI and robotics work together, it gets even scarier.
Tomorrow’s big tech companies may make use of AI and thus control the lives of their users to some degree.
In such a world, third-party organisations may know more about us than we know about ourselves. Decisions will
be made on our behalf and increasingly without our awareness, and those decisions won’t necessarily be in our best
interests.
These issues are foreseeable, and the stakes (风险) are high. So, what can be done In order to achieve the
highest possible public trust in the benefits of AI and robotics in our lives, there are three things urgent for action.
First, the industry’s AI and robotics leaders must start to combine consumers’ interests in safety and privacy into
their technology offerings – something we haven’t seen before in the development of the Internet and mobile
markets. Second, big tech companies and their smaller start-up siblings, should support common agreements,
principles, protocols, standards and other policies. The more policy structure there is in place that protects consumer
interests, the more trust AI and robotics deserve. Finally, a trusted organisation should design and carry out a reliable
means of creating and protecting the new AI and robotics policy structure from bad influence.
Luckily, although the gap between tech advances and the lagging policy structure is widening, there is still
time to catch up – if we act now.
The combination of AI, robotics and big tech companies is potentially dangerous, but by taking the appropriate
steps now we can avoid these dangers and enjoy the huge potential benefits that they have to offer.
32. Which is among the reasons for people’s fear of AI and robotics
A. AI, robotics and 5G can work together.
B. The new lifestyles cannot be imagined.
C. AI and robotics keep improving nonstop.
D. AI and robotics can do everything for us.
33. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage
A. Big tech companies will control people’s life completely.
B. The benefits brought by AI and robotics cannot be enjoyed.
C. The relationship between humans and big companies may be scary.
D. The third-party organisation will make decisions for humans’ good.
34. According to the passage, how can trusted AI and robotics be built
A. More policies that protect AI and robotics should be made.
B. AI and robotics should be controlled by big tech companies.
C. The development of AI and robotics should be slowed down.
D. Consumers’ interests in safety and privacy should be considered.
35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. Achieving Trusted AI and Robotics by Making Policies
B. Avoiding the Potential Dangers of AI, Robotics and Big Tech
C. AI and Robotics Creating a New Lifestyle for Human Beings
D. AI, Robotics and 5G Working Together to Benefit Human Beings

How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision There are people who go over every
detail exhaustively before making a choice. 36 Psychologists call this way of thinking a cognitive bias (偏
见), a tendency toward a specific mental mistake.
To study “jumping”, we examined decision-making patterns among more than 600 people from the general
population. We found that jumpers made more errors than non-jumpers on problems that require thoughtful analysis.
37 In a quiz about US civics, they overestimated the chance that their answers were right much more than other
participants did – even when their answers were wrong.
So what is behind “jumping” Psychological researchers commonly distinguish between two pathways of
thought: automatic system, which reflects ideas that come to the mind easily, spontaneously and without effort, and
controlled system including conscious and effortful reasoning. Jumpers and non-jumpers are equally influenced by
automatic thoughts. 38 It is the controlled system that helps people avoid mental biases introduced by the
automatic system. As a result, jumpers were more likely to accept the conclusions made at first blush without further
questioning. A lack of controlled thinking is also more broadly connected to their problematic beliefs and faulty
reasoning.
39 A method called metacognitive training can be used to target their biases, which can help people
think more deliberatively. In this training, participants are confronted with their own biases. They can learn about
the missteps and other ways of thinking through the problem at hand. It helps to chip away at participants’
overconfidence.
In everyday life, the question of whether we should think things through or instead go with our guts is a frequent
and important one. 40 Sometimes the most important decision we make can be to take some more time
before making a choice.
A. Happily, there may be some hope for jumpers.
B. Also, jumpers had problems with overconfidence.
C. But a fair number of individuals are quick to jump to conclusions.
D. It is certainly possible for them to overthink things to take a decision.
E. We plan to continue the work to trace other problems introduced by jumping.
F. The jumpers, however, did not engage in controlled reasoning to the same degree as non-jumpers.
G. Recent studies show that even gathering just a little bit more evidence may help us avoid a major mistake.

One possible version:
Good morning, everyone. It’s my great honor to deliver a speech about friendship.
As the famous saying goes, “Life is partly what we make it and partly what is made by the friends we choose.” It’s
we who determine our future, but our friends also play a vital part in it.
Reflecting on my experiences, I’ve come to realize the profound impact my friends have had on me. One of my
closest friends, Wang Wei, possesses a deep love for reading. Through his enthusiastic recommendations, I have
gradually discovered the joy of reading.
Choosing our friends wisely is crucial. It is essential to seek out individuals who share our values. Besides,
surrounding ourselves with positive people can serve as a powerful source of inspiration, boosting our self-belief and
encouraging us to pursue our dreams.
Above is my understanding of friendship. Thank you.

of flowers to brighten up the place. In the following weeks, you may wish to grow your own fruit and vegetables. I will
be here to advise and encourage you. I am here every day, so it is easy to come and find me if you have any questions.
All I ask in return is that you enjoy your time in the great outdoors. Gardening is such a wonderful thing to do. It’s good
exercise, and rewarding. Plus, when you garden in groups like this, it turns into a wonderful social event too.
Right then, let me show you to your areas. Follow me.
