Mike White wasn’t too concerned when his five-year-old dog, BuzzMan, hadn’t returned last
February. It had been a few hours, so using his cell phone, White followed the sound from the
GPS on the dog to a narrow cave entrance just large enough for a dog like BuzzMan. There were
fresh dog prints outside. Now White was much more concerned.
Brewington and Mirza were called in for help. They arrived at once and set about enlarging
the entranceway by hand. The passageway was just three feet high, forcing the two men to slowly
crawl(爬行), the only light coming from headlamps attached to their helmets(头盔). They stopped
when they hit a tight space and returned to the outside world.
When BuzzMan hadn’t appeared by Sunday afternoon, smaller volunteers were called in. At
5:00 p.m., four new cavers, two men and two women, moved through the entrance. What added to
their difficulty was the dangerous cave floods. “If it rains,” Mirza says, “the cave will kill people.”
That night’s weather forecast: rain.
After an hour or so, they reached a difficult situation and could go no farther. Still, one of
them, Romanak, decided to push a bit farther before quitting. He crawled 30 feet more, and the
passage gave way to a large room. And there was BuzzMan, standing on a narrow rock. Romanak
gently attached a chain to his collar, helping him off the rock and out.

{#{QQABYQKEggAgABJAABgCUwXACkOQkAEACKoORBAMoAAAgRFABCA=}#}
At 9:30 p.m.—30 hours later, BuzzMan got out of the cave, running straight to Mike White
and licking him by wet kisses.
In total, eight cavers answered the request to rescue Buzz Man on a volunteer basis and were
thought highly of by the community. Mirza laughed off the praise. After all, going into tight spaces
was their hobby. “What we consider fun,” he said, “often makes most people frightened.”
24. Why did Mike White feel much more concerned
A. He had difficulty in following the dog’s GPS.
B. His dog might be stuck in a dangerous situation.
C. The cave entrance was large enough for his dog.
D. The rescuers failed to arrive at the scene in time.
25. What increased the difficulty for the cavers
A. The dark light of the headlamp. B. The shortage of the manpower.
C. The coming floods of the cave. D. The length of the passageway.
26. What can we know from the article
A. The size of the passageway was suitable for the cavers.
B. White and Buzz Man were very attached to each other.
C. It was Mirza who helped Buzz Man off the rock and out.
D. Eight cavers participating in the rescue were well paid.
27. What message does Mirza express in the last paragraph
A. Many hands make light work. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. D. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.
C
Many adults in South Korea have chosen either not to have children or not to marry. A South
Korean government agency announced in September that the total fertility rate(生育率) reached
0.81 last year. The total fertility rate is the average number of babies born to each woman in their
reproductive years. South Korea’s fertility rate has been the world's lowest for three years now.
The population decreased for the first time in 2021. It raised concerns for severe damage to
the economy. Some observers expect labor shortages and high spending on retirement payments as
the number of older people increases while the number of taxpayers decreases. President Yoon
Suk Yeol has ordered policymakers to find better ways to deal with the problem. The fertility rate,
he said, is still decreasing although South Korea has spent $ 210 billion over the past 16 years to
increase it.
Many young South Koreans say that they don’t want to have a family. Reasons some say for
not having children include: a difficult job market, costly housing, inequality between the sexes,
and social inequality. The high cost of raising children in a competitive society is also a reason.
Some women say men expect them to do much of the childcare while they face discrimination at
work.
Lee So-Young is a population policy expert at the Korea Institute for Health and Social
Affairs. She said, “People think our country isn't an easy place to live.” And she added, “They
believe their children can't have better lives than them.” Choi Yoon Kyung is an expert at the
Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. She said many people who fail to enter good schools
and get good jobs feel they have become “dropouts” who “cannot be happy”.
South Korea has been offering different incentives (刺激 ) and support programs for those
4
{#{QQABYQKEggAgABJAABgCUwXACkOQkAEACKoORBAMoAAAgRFABCA=}#}
who give birth to many children. But Choi said the fertility rate has been falling too fast to see any
real effects.
28. Why does the author mention the number in paragraph 1
A. To present a fact. B. To explain a rule.
C. To clarify a concept. D. To make a comparison.
29. What could be a result of low fertility rate
A. More citizens fail to be happy. B. Retirement payment falls down.
C. People have to pay higher taxes. D. Less people are available for work.
30. Which is a cause of the decreasing fertility rate in South Korea
A. The gender equality. B. The loss of government support.
C. The ever increasing life pressure. D. The high expectation of children.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. The rising stress among young South Koreans.
B. The government’s effort to improve fertility rate.
C. The continuous low fertility rate in South Korea.
D. The severe economic damage of less new-born babies.
D
Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics(工作狂). How could a person
tell that he/she is a workaholic A workaholic works long hours, at the cost of personal
relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their
mood: when work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy
working—or doing something to promote their work—they feel anxious and guilty. They hang
onto jobs for dear life and do everything they can to make sure they’re essential.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. Just because work itself is a
respectable pursuit(追求) doesn’t mean that an addiction to it is any less damaging than other sorts
of addictions. A number of studies show that workaholism has been associated with a wide range
of health problems, such as anxiety and heart disease.
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study
published in the American Journal of Family Therapy found that working too much negatively
influenced an employee’s marriage. This isn’t surprising, since if you’re married to your work, it
can be difficult to be married to anything, or anyone else. There have also been studies looking at
the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good. Adult children of
workaholic fathers experienced more depression and anxiety and a weaker sense of self.
However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion
to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feelings of
self-worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life, you might point out
the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good
book, or a yoga class. Seek to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and
support them in finding a solution.
32. What can we infer about workaholics
A. They put work in the first place. B. They usually have life outside work.
C. They often get pleasure from work. D. They win respect from their workmates.
5
{#{QQABYQKEggAgABJAABgCUwXACkOQkAEACKoORBAMoAAAgRFABCA=}#}
33. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A. Bad influences of workaholism.
B. Reasons for being workaholics.
C. How people deal with their addictions.
D. How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
34. What can we do to help workaholics in life
A. Force them to join family activities.
B. Reward them for their hard work.
C. Help them find self-worth and confidence.
D. Try to understand and support them.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.

Alex rode his bike on his way home, and Johnson’s Pond came into view.

always o alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟 ) sunbathing on suing
rocks Alex as curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the
library to check out books on turtles,
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they
could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead.
It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a
look.
And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way
across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching The turtle was still only halfway across
the road Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they
could even bite off someone’s finger! What could he do
Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to
a stop.
“Are you alight, Alex ” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.
“I’m fine, Mrs. Ram’s.” said Alex. “I’m just trying to save a turtle. It’s probably going to lay
egg.”
“Oh, yeah. It’s spring.” said Mrs. Ram’s. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in
the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.
Alex thought about what Mrs. Ram’s had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying
to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn’t stand there all day trying to stop cars.
He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened.
He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad. _________________________________
