Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport.
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶) that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.
That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.

Futurologists predict that life will probably be very apparently distinct in 2050 in all the fields of activity, from entertainment to technology.
First of all, it seems that TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. Instead, people will choose a programme from a “menu” and a computer will send the programme directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read newspaper stories and see pictures on a computer thousands of kilometers away. By 2050, music, films, programmes, newspapers and books will come to us by computer. We will also be able to see, smell and touch the things that we see on television.
In transport, cars will run on new, clean “gas” and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed of the car and there won’t be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to where you want to go. Space planes will fly all over the world and people will fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo in just two hours.
In technology, robots will have replaced people in factories. Many factories already use robots. Big companies prefer robots—they do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere-in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes.
Last but not least, medicine technology will have conquered many diseases. By 2050, we will be able to help blind and deaf people see again and hear again. Scientists will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have.
8. What will happen to the media in 2050
A. Televisions will disappear
B. Computers will take the place of televisions.
C. Computers will choose the programme for us.
D. We can smell the dishes on television.
9. What will the vehicles be like in 2050
A. They will be less polluted and more safe.
B. They will be controlled by robots.
C. Planes will fly all over the world in a short time.
D. They will go at a very high speed and run on oil.
10. What can we learn from the 4th paragraph
A. Robots will ask for pay rises and go on strike in the future.
B. There will be no people working in factories by 2050.
C. There will be cloned people coming to power by 2050
D. More and more work will be done by robots by 2050.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about

Where do great musicians, great mathematicians and great sportspeople get their talent For decades now, we have assumed that most of them are simply born with a talent that ordinary people do not have. When baseball legend Ted Williams claimed that his achievement had nothing to do with natural ability but were the result of practice, practice, practice, people assumed that he was merely being modest. But scientists now believe that there was a good deal of truth in what he said.
Throughout the last century, it was accepted that we inherit (继承) many of our characteristics from our parents via their DNA, that each of us inherits a fixed amount of intelligence -a fixed IQ, and that most of us are to be ordinary. But now it is accepted that our genes interact with their surroundings, getting turned on and off all the time. “There are no genetic factors that can be studied independently of the environment,” explains Michael Meaney of McGill University. “And there are no environmental factors that function independently of our genes. They work alongside each other.”
How does this view of the role of genes change our understanding of individual talent and abilities Does it now mean that genes don’t matter, and that we all have the potential to be like, say, Lionel Messi or Lebron James Such a claim flies in the face of reason. The genes we inherit clearly matter, as do genetic differences between individuals. But it is also true that Lionel Messi would not have become the super footballer he is, nor Lebron James a basketball superstar, without putting in thousands of hours of practice. They could have turned out entirely different people. Talent researcher Kevin Rathunde agrees. “High academic achievers are not necessarily born much smarter than others but genes do count,” he writes in his book Talented Teenagers, “and above all they usually work harder and develop more self-discipline.”
12. What did Ted Williams think led to his success
A. His natural talent. B. His full commitment.
C. His modest personality. D. His extraordinary intelligence.
13. What did we widely believe during the 20 century
A. Intelligence has little to do with DNA.
B. Our genes interact with our environment.
C. The majority of us are of average intelligence.
D. Our character is simply decided by inherited DNA.
14. Why does the author mention “Lionel Messi” and “Lebron James” in paragraph 3
A. To clarify a point. B. To illustrate a rule.
C. To offer a solution. D. To make a prediction.
15. Which statement will Kevin Rathunde probably agree with
A. Most of us are born to be average persons.
B. We could all be geniuses if working hard enough.
C. Genetie factors are more important than hard work.
D. Great talent is a combination of genes and practice.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。讲述了一人的基因对人的天赋起到作用,但是周围的环境和后天的努力也会有影响。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“When baseball legend Ted Williams claimed that his achievement had nothing to do with natural ability but were the result of practice, practice, practice, people assumed that he was merely being modest.(当棒球传奇人物泰德·威廉姆斯声称他的成就与天赋无关,而是练习、练习、再练习的结果时,人们以为他只是谦虚而已)”可知,泰德·威廉姆斯认为是他的努力导致了他的成功,也就是他的全身心的投入。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Throughout the last century, it was accepted that we inherit (继承) many of our characteristics from our parents via their DNA, that each of us inherits a fixed amount of intelligence -a fixed IQ, and that most of us are to be ordinary.(在上个世纪,人们普遍认为,我们通过DNA从父母那里继承了许多特征,我们每个人都继承了固定的智力——固定的智商,我们大多数人都是平凡的)”可知,在20世纪,我们普遍相信我们大多数人的智力一般。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“How does this view of the role of genes change our understanding of individual talent and abilities Does it now mean that genes don’t matter, and that we all have the potential to be like, say, Lionel Messi or Lebron James Such a claim flies in the face of reason. The genes we inherit clearly matter, as do genetic differences between individuals. But it is also true that Lionel Messi would not have become the super footballer he is, nor Lebron James a basketball superstar, without putting in thousands of hours of practice.(这种关于基因作用的观点如何改变我们对个人天赋和能力的理解 这是否意味着基因不重要,我们都有成为莱昂内尔·梅西或勒布朗·詹姆斯那样的潜力 这样的说法完全违背理性。我们遗传的基因显然很重要,个体之间的基因差异也很重要。但同样不可否认的是,如果没有成千上万小时的训练,莱昂内尔 梅西(Lionel Messi)就不会成为现在的超级足球运动员,勒布朗 詹姆斯(Lebron James)也不会成为篮球巨星)”可知,作者提到“莱昂内尔·梅西”和“勒布朗·詹姆斯”是为了阐明一个观点。故选A项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Talent researcher Kevin Rathunde agrees. “High academic achievers are not necessarily born much smarter than others but genes do count,” he writes in his book Talented Teenagers, “and above all they usually work harder and develop more self-discipline.”(人才研究人员Kevin Rathunde对此表示赞同。他在《天才少年》一书中写道:“学业成绩优异的人不一定天生就比别人聪明,但基因确实很重要。最重要的是,他们通常更努力学习,更自律。”)”可知,Kevin Rathunde认为伟大的才能是基因和实践的结合。故选D项。

【20题详解】
根据空后的“And the time has been reducing greatly in recent years.(近年来,时间已经大大减少。)” 中的nature time与空后一句中的the time相呼应。故选B项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted was a new bicycle. But I knew my family couldn’t afford one.
A new bike was just a dream, so I wanted a nightstand (床头柜). I figured that at least I would have a safe place to keep my private things. So I asked my parents for a nightstand with lockable drawers (抽屉).
We went to the secondhand furniture store and found an old, dark brown nightstand. It didn’t look too cool, but at least it had drawers that I could keep locked. I decided that I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck (卡住) at the back of the bottom drawer. I reached in all the way to the back and was surprised to find a bag.
When opening the bag, I realized that there were some papers in it which were some kind of official-looking documents (文件). And beneath were a bunch of dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!
I went ahead and read the papers, which turned out to be a will (遗嘱). Some old lady was leaving her savings to her son and grandchildren. The old lady must have died and nobody knew the money. Her family donated the nightstand to the secondhand furniture store and it was now in my hands.
I counted the money, over 1,000 dollars in total. I was going crazy. With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. I could even buy bicycles for my younger brothers. Maybe I could also get my parents a car.
What a dilemma! I could keep it and get all kinds of things for myself and my family. Or I could give it all back. “Somebody helps me with this!” I begged. But I really didn’t need anyone else to give me the answer. I already knew right from wrong. I decided not to fail this test. It was a test of honor - my honor.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Several days later, the old lady’s son and his wife came to my house.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I called my family into my bedroom and showed them what I had found. Eyes caught by the incredible bunch of dollar bills at once, they held their breath uncontrollably, frozen with shock. I told them I wanted to give them all back, and undoubtedly, I got their support. So we tuned to the secondhand furniture store owner for help. Looking through the donation records, the owner found the son’s telephone number. We got in touch with him right away, told him about the will and the money and made an appointment with him.
Several days later, the old lady’s son and his wife came to my house. Tears welled up in the man’s eyes when he saw the money and the papers, which apparently brought back his memories about his dead mother. Then the couple expressed their sincere gratitude to us. They said they were in big financial trouble now and my act of honesty was a timely help, not only giving them hope but also strengthening their faith. I had never felt better. No new bicycle could make me feel as good about myself as I felt that day. I passed an extremely important test of my honor.

11. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. What our future life will be like. B. TV channels will disappear in 2050.
C. What cars will be like in the future. D. Many diseases will disappear in 2050.
D
