Manatees(海牛) are huge sea animals. They can be as long as 4 meters and weigh up to 590 kilograms when grown. Although they’re very large, manatees only eat sea grass and other plants that grow in the sea. That’s one reason they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm water looking for food.
Since 1967 Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals. Most threats(威胁) to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems the animals face is boats. Manatees are curious(好奇的) and quite slow. That has led to thousands of manatees being hurt or killed by boats. With protection, the number of manatees managed to rise again. At one point, there were only about 2, 000 manatees left in Florida. But by 2016, there were about 8, 800 manatees.
But now manatees are facing a new challenge:They can’t get enough to eat. Because of pollution, sea grass that manatees depend upon began to disappear around 2011. Last year, 1, 101 manatees died. That was a record. Most starved to death because they had no grass to eat. Many of the manatees that remain are quite thin.
So last December, government wildlife experts came up with a plan to provide emergency food for the manatees. They decided to feed them on green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. The feeding place, a warm and clean water area, is popular with the manatees.
This plan is very successful. Around 350 manatees come here every day to get food. Sometimes, as many as 800 manatees can be here. Even so, scientists worry that many more manatees could starve this winter. So Florida is now working to help sea grass beds grow. But that will take time.
6.Why are manatees called “sea cows”

C.Because of their habits.

Online shops selling such food are growing rapidly, too. On Taobao, around 2. 1 million people buy near-expired food every year.
From a food safety standpoint, which may make many customers worried, experts believe that such products won’t do any harm. “Near- expired food is safe and buying these products is a good practice to help prevent waste of resources, which should be encouraged, ” says Zhou Yu, a professor of food nutrition (营养) and safety at Anhui Agricultural University.

Born in a teacher’s family in Yizhang county in 1992, Jiang’s world has been silent since she was 6 months old. However, when Jiang got a little older, her parents began showing her how to understand people by reading lips (唇). It was a slow and hard process, but her parents did not give up, and soon Jiang began to speak.
When she was old enough, Jiang went to an excellent primary school. She said it was difficult at first. During lessons, teachers would often write on the blackboard with their backs to the students. She had to copy down everything on the blackboard and study alone after class to keep up with her classmates.

Nobody likes having acne(青春痘), but if you’ve got it, don’t lose heart! Eight in ten teens experience acne. It’s common, and it can be treated. We’ll show you how, but first, let’s clear up some wrong ideas about acne.
You get acne when you don’t wash your face enough Not true! In fact, if you wash too much, your skin(皮肤) will get too dry, which can harm it and cause more acne. It’s best to use good acne-fighting wash in the morning and a gentler(更温和的) wash at night.
People often think that fried foods cause acne because they have a lot of oil. Oil isn’t necessarily good for you, but eating oil-rich food isn’t a cause of acne. Chocolate won’t hurt either, as long as it is dark chocolate that has at least 70 percent cocoa. What’s more, although some kinds of makeup(化妆品) have some bad influence, others actually help to take in oil on the face.
______ First, keep a healthy diet with lots of fruit, vegetables, and fish. Avoid sugar and milk. Second, use a light makeup. Do this after you wash at night. Remember, you don’t want your skin getting too dry. The third, stress is a serious cause of acne. For example, you might find that you get more pimples(疙瘩) around exam time. Try exercising or listening to quiet music if you have trouble relaxing. The last, don’t pop(挤) pimples. This can make pimples last longer and create marks that may never go away. Be patient—most pimples last no more than a week or so.
Acne is a minor problem, but it can leave you feeling unhappy with your appearance. It may be hard, but you’re not helpless—a little care will make a big difference.

Living on an island might sound wonderful. But what will happen if you leave for a trip and find you can never return What will happen if your home, and even the land you stand on, disappear forever For people who are living in the Pacific (太平洋) Islands, this is really possible.
Why Climate (气候) change. Climate change is causing the sea to rise. That’s bad news for Pacific Islands. Young people on the islands are even starting to wonder: Will they be the last humans on the islands
Of course not if the islanders have anything to do about it. These people are deeply connected to their homelands. The Pacific Islands are made of 11 different countries. Now all these countries are working together. They’re joining forces to fight climate change.
Why does climate change bring such huge trouble to this part of the world Islands have low elevations. So they are among the first places that are influenced by rising sea levels. That’s why countries of the Pacific Islands are working together to do their part. But these are small countries, can they make a big difference They can, because most of the things that people on islands buy are brought by ships. This is very harmful to the environment. After all, ships put out almost 3 percent of the world’s carbon (碳) emissions (排放). That makes climate change worse.
The islanders realize the problem. So, in 2019, six countries got together and came up with a plan. They agree to cut carbon emissions from shipping by 40 percent by 2030. And by 2050, they expect zero-carbon shipping.
How will they make it They plan to use some really cool carbon-free technologies. They’ll make use of solar (太阳能) and wind energy.
Sea levels are rising, but hopes aren’t going down on the Pacific Islands.

Many people often spend hours watching videos on their phones before sleep, with the lights off. However, do you know that using your phone in the dark is not a very good idea The screen of your phone sends out blue light, which is quite harmful to your eyes. It can also be hard for you to go asleep.
What is blue light Blue light is everywhere. It is sent out both by artificial(人造的)light and by our biggest light—the sun! Blue light is the part of visible(可见的)light which has the second shortest wavelength. Light with shorter wavelengths have greater power. The strong energy of blue light allows it to pass easily through the cornea(角膜)of our eyes. Therefore, blue light is quite harmful to our eyes.
However, blue light isn’t all that bad. After all, it is a part of sunlight. In fact, it can help to improve our sleep. The problem, however, lies in the bright screen lights we stare at each night. In other words, the problem isn’t exactly the exposure(暴露)to blue light, but the time of our exposure to it.
Some scientists studied the difference between reading a paper book and an e-book before bedtime. They found that it took longer for people who used an e-reader to fall asleep. These people were also less smart in the following morning.
So, to protect the quality of your sleep, avoid screens an hour or two before your bedtime. If you must use your phone before going to bed, keep a night lamp on.

44.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us
A.Blue light affects our lives.
B.Don’t use your phone or watch TV at night.
C.Don’t spend too much time on the bright screen.
45.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
