It’s winter time. According to the Chinese lunar calendar (农历), November, December, January and February are winter months. They include six solar terms: lidong, xiaoxue, daxue, dongzhi, xiaohan and dahan.
Lidong (Nov 7-8) is the start of winter. After lidong, most parts of the country are very cold. On this day, after a year of hard work, people are happy to take a break and spend some time with family. The northern part of China celebrates lidong as the “Small Spring Festival”. People have dumplings and eat mutton (羊肉) soup.
Xiaoxue (Nov 22-23) and daxue (Dec 6-8) come after lidong. During xiaoxue, northern China can snow and temperatures slowly fall below 0℃. Daxue means even more snow and bigger temperature drops.
When dongzhi (Dec 21-23) comes, it brings shortest days of the year and the longest nights. Many places around the country can be cold yet. Ancient (古代的) Chinese would often start counting “nine cold periods” (数九寒天) from dongzhi. Every cold period (一段时间) has nine days. They believed that after 81 cold days, spring would arrive.
Xiaohan (Jan 4-6) usually brings the low temperatures of the year. There may be high winds and snow.
Finally, during dahan (Jan 19-21), the snowy weather fills the fields with snow. All Chinese are ready to welcome the Chinese New Year after dahan. Spring Festival, China’s most important festival, falls at this time. After that, a new round of solar terms will start.

The epidemic(疫情) changes our lives in many ways—the way we study, work, or even how we greet each other and celebrate holidays. Let’s take a look at the safer greeting ways.
No more kisses
Too many kisses are not good for now. France says that people should not kiss each other on the faces. Just looking into a person’s eyes can be a greeting.
Wink(眨眼) at others
In Italy, a woman makes a video. In her video, if you want to say hello to others, you can wink at them with one eye. It’s a cute way.
Pat(拍打) on the back
It’s usual to shake hands in Australia. But if you do this now, you may get ill. An officer says a pat on the back may be better.
Tap(轻敲) feet together
There is a popular way to greet others in Iran(伊朗). In a video, two Iranian men meet and tap their feet together. They wear masks and put their hands in their pockets. It looks like they are playing a fun game.
Now people around the world stop using the usual styles and try safer ways. We shall all work together to help stop the epidemic.

4. ①. popular ②. looks like

1根据第一段“The epidemic changes our lives in many ways—the way we study, work, or even how we greet each other”疫情在很多方面改变了我们的生活—我们学习、工作的方式,甚至我们相互问候的方式。 be different from“和……不同”;because of“因为”,后接名词短语。故填different from;because of。
2根据“Too many kisses are not good for now.”现在亲吻太多是不好的,可知第一空填too many kisses;根据“Just looking into a person’s eyes can be a greeting.” 故填too many kisses;looking into。
3根据“In her video, if you want to say hello to others, you can wink at them with one eye. It’s a cute way.” 可知第一空填wink at;根据“It’s usual to shake hands in Australia. But if you do this now, you may get ill.” Australian people/The Australians/Australians。故填wink at;Australian people/The Australians/Australians。
4根据“There is a popular way to greet others in Iran. In a video, two Iranian men meet and tap their feet together.” 在一段视频中,两名伊朗男子相遇,并一起轻敲他们的脚,所以第一空填popular;根据“ It looks like they are playing a fun game.” 故填popular;looks like。
5根据“Now people around the world stop using the usual styles and try safer ways.” 故填stop using;safer ways。

Past and present
Last Friday, we had a discussion about life’s changes in the past and at present. Here are some of the changes.
In the past, we usually watched TV in our free time. We used to read books in the libraries and the bookstores. We could do only a little reading. Nowadays, most families use computers and we can read newspapers and magazines on the Internet. We can learn more knowledge by reading on the Internet.
We used to go on a trip on foot, by bike or by bus. Few people chose to travel by plane. So it often took more time to get where we wanted to go, and we had to spend more time during a trip. But at present, things have changed a lot. We can often travel by car, by underground, by train and even by plane. We can travel abroad or around the world with a passport. Traveling can make us enjoy the beauty of nature and learn about the world faster and better.

But it’s easy to take away mold from hard food. Mold can’t grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2. 5cm around and below the mold to clear it. It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is totally covered with mold, you should still throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillin (青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, and they’re quite delicious as well.
