We all put our hands in the middle, ready for the “TIGERS!” shout. Andrew looked up, his face wrinkled in confusion, and then loosed in relief he said, “Whoa, for a second I forgot there was a girl on this team. I was wondering why there was one hand with painted pink nails!” The guys laughed, and I smiled, once again reminded how cool it was that I was different. “1, 2, 3, TIGERS!” and we were off to the field.
My adventures as the only girl on my all-boys middle school football team were always interesting. Football is known as being mostly male. But I love football. Ever since I could walk, I would get around the fields. My dad is a huge football fan, and we spend many Saturday afternoons playing football in the yard or watching games. Football is in my blood. So when signups came for the 7th-and 8th-grade team, I signed up. Who says a girl can’t do it
Back to Grade 7. Though it was strange for the guys to have me there, and a few felt embarrassed when they heard they’d be tackling (擒抱摔倒) a girl, they got used to it. The coach treated me like anyone else, and the boys also learned to. I worked out, I tackled people, and I got tackled. By the time I got home every night, my body literally crumbled into my bed. But it was all worth it. Game days were everyone’s favorite. Football is a team sport of passion, pride and love. The coach would always tell us, “We win as a team: we lose as a team!”
To play well we needed to work as a team. Different though I was being the only girl, it didn’t matter. One person, one girl, is not a big thing. I was a part of the team. The coach got us all together, and we’d once again shout “TIGERS!”

My teacher, Mrs Agnew, said my reading comprehension (理解力) and ability to pronounce words were at a lower level than other fourth graders’. I was nervous every time she called on me to read aloud because, although I would try my hardest, she would always have to help me with the words. She guessed I suffered from dyslexia (诵读困难), and she suggested I be tested for dyslexia.
At first, I didn’t want to be tested because I feared it would prove I truly had dyslexia. However, finally, I decided to receive the test.
One morning, I went to hospital with my parents and met Dr. Waites. Before long, I began to take the test. The test made me feel uncomfortable, and I was frightened to answer the questions related to the test, in fear of facing failure. When the test ended, Dr. Waites said the test results showed that I had dyslexia, I was shocked and felt upset. Dr.Waites comforted (安慰) me, saying that his hospital had many other kids who had dyslexia. Then, he smiled and suggested ways to get over dyslexia.
According to him, I should often read books and understand what was read. And I should try to read aloud, and build a vocabulary of recognized and understood words. Besides, I should often do physical exercise. And he suggested I receive speech therapy (治疗) in his hospital every few days. As for my parents, Dr. Waites suggested they spare time to read aloud with me.
After returning home, I searched information on the Internet and further leaned about dyslexia. I found it was not easy for a person to get over dyslexia. 第四部分写作
第一节
Dear Sad Mother,
Learning from your blog post that your daughter stays up using mobile phones and feels sleepy in class, I’m writing to share with you my personal suggestions.
First of all, you’d better have a heart-to-heart talk with her, making her know the importance of using mobile phones correctly. As you know, in today’s world, quitting using mobile phones is not realistic. Therefore, we should teach her how to use it properly. In addition, you might as well tell her what she does will do great harm to her study and health, and may even cause cancer or sudden death. Finally, to help her get rid of the addiction to mobile phones, not only should you convince her of its harm, but you should also try to arouse her interest in studies.
I hope you will find the advice helpful. All the best!
Yours truly,
Li Hua
第二节
They brought me a book about some people defeating life challenges. They read it together with me every day. Gradually, I was confident and determined that I would overcome my own life challenge. Based on Dr. Waites’ suggestions, I set out to remove my dyslexia. Each day, I kept reading aloud, remembering words, doing sports, etc. Besides, I went to hospital for speech therapy regularly and my parents supported me. Finally, I overcame my learning disability. Dr. Waites confirmed this when I was tested again.
Several years later, when I volunteered at the same hospital, a girl who had dyslexia asked me to read a book to her. I read the book very slowly so that she could understand the story and the words. When it came time for me to leave, the girl thanked me. I walked out of her room with a huge smile on my face. I had overcome my disability and was helping others to overcome theirs. I am determined to succeed in life, and in the process, help others face and conquer the challenges that I have overcome.
