Coming from India, Vikash Kumar Singh has been living in China for more than ten years and speaks Chinese very fluently. He now works as a teacher at Beijing Foreign Studies University.
Vikash had been translating Qinqiang, a famous novel by Jia Pingwa, for almost two years. When the winter holiday began, Vikash had more time to work on the translation and managed to finish it before the Chinese New Year.
As part of a Chinese and Indian literature translation program supported by both governments, Vikash thought that the translation of literary works like Qinqiang would open a window for Indian people, through which they could have a better understanding of China and Chinese literature.
“I would like to thank both governments for their support for this culture program, ”said Vikash. “This is quite helpful on the mutual understanding of people from both countries.”
Getting this long-lasting work done, Vikash felt very buoyant. He could enjoy the Spring Festival in a more relaxed way.
Vikash told the reporter that most of his friends also stayed in Beijing. They visited each other and talked about how they celebrate the New Year in their home countries such as Indonesia and Bulgaria. And they felt it was also cool to stay in Beijing and enjoy the Spring Festival.
As a typical “Haidian District” parent who highly values children’s education and future development, Vikash actively interacted with the parents of his child’s classmates during the holiday.
Vikash also spoke to his family in India about his experience of the holiday by phone. Besides he introduced the customs of celebrating the Spring Festival in detail.
Through the transnational dissemination (传播) of traditions and cultures, such as festivals and novels, Vikash deepened the mutual understanding of people from China and India with his profession.
4. What did Vikash decide to do during his winter holiday
A. Travel around China. B. Move to a new district.
C. Call on a famous writer. D. Finish his translation work.
5. What is Vikash’s attitude to the culture program
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Worried.
6. What does the underlined word “buoyant” probably mean in paragraph 5
A. Nervous. B. Safe. C. Tired. D. Cheerful.
7. What can we learn about Vikash
A. He observed the Spring Festival for the first time.

C. He is very interested in educational development.
D. He is a messenger of cultural exchange.
C
Am I the only one, or do other parents also wish there could be a period between high school and college when our kids could think what they want to be when they grow up You know, that’s the time when they could be exposed to a variety of professions.
So why do teens need to take a sabbatical(休假) after high school As a teenager with limited knowledge and experience, it’s really hard to decide what career path he/she wants to follow as an adult. After the period, they could be certain about it.
Some kids know what they want to do from an early age and they follow that track in college and end up in that field as adults. And that’s fantastic for them. But they’re the minority, because I found a statistic from an article that confirms that 80% of college-bound students have to choose a major. But they are also expected to pick out schools and apply to and start degree programs without clearly knowing where they want to end up. And that is shocking.
That’s why I’ve often thought it makes more sense to design a sabbatical, a time when high school graduates can go to sample a handful of careers before they head off to college. The time can give them a chance fo examine different fields before they commit to one discipline for the next four years of their life and beyond.
What I’m talking about is different from the gap year, which is designed to let our kids take a step back between high school and college, so they can maturely consider the benefits of higher education. It’s a different kind of option altogether. I’m suggesting something more like a series of internships (实习期), for lack of a better word, in their potential fields of study, so they can really see first-hand what a career in education or law or nursing is like from the inside and not just from a lecture hall.
8. Which could be the benefit for teenagers taking a sabbatical after high schol according to the author
A. Gaining some work experience. B. Learning about the adult world.
C. Choosing a suitable career path. D. Valuing the opportunity to study.
9. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Students being expected to pick out schools.
B. Students ending up in an unwanted field as adults.
C. Some students starting degree programs after going to college.
D. Most students selecting a major without knowing about their future carers.
10. What is the author’s suggestion for high school graduates
A. Taking a gap year. B. Trying some different jobs.
C. Experiencing life at a college. D. Visiting as many places as posible.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To provide teenagers with advice on how to choose a major.
B. To explain the necessity of a sabbatical after high school.
C. To inform teenagers of the importance of work experience.
D. To show differences between the sabbatical and the gap year.
D
A recent study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) has found that living close to spaces with trees may be better than grassy or paved (铺砌的) areas for children ‘s long-term development.
Many previous studies have argued that exposure to green spaces is associated with better memory and attention in early childhood, higher academic achievement, and fewer behavioral and emotional problems. However, this is the first study to explore whether the type of vegetation makes a difference in these positive associations.
For the study, the researchers analyzed data from over 27,500 children in the Vancouver area, who were followed from birth to five years of age (between 2000 and 2005). By the time they were five, the participant’s kindergarten teachers reported on their physical health, mental well-being, social competence, emotional maturity, communication skills, language development, and general knowledge. By looking at maps of where the children lived, the researchers were able to compare their social competence developmental outcomes to their residential aresa.
While children with the greatest exposure to vegetation ( either trees or grass ) had the highest developmental scores, those exposed mainly to paved surfaces had the lowest ones. However, the study revealed that living close to tree-filled areas in early childhood led to better developmental scores than being exposed to grass-covered environments. This may be due to the fact that tree-filled areas are better in reducing air pollution, noise and heat than more open green spaces, while also contributing to a higher degree to support restoration from mental tiredness. Grassy spaces, however, are more likely to encourage group activities, benefiting children’s social well-being, according to the research.
Although more research is needed, these findings may be useful to urban planners. “Taken together, our findings suggest that transforming paved surfaces into green spaces and, in particular, increasing the amount of trees in neighborhoods may positively affect early childhood health and development,” concluded study senior author Matilda van den Bosch at ISGlobal.
12. What does the recent study focus on
A. How kids adapt to the environment.
B. Whether previous studies are correct.
C. The benefits of green spaces to children.
D. The effect of various vegetation types on kids.
13. What is the 3rd paragraph mainly about
A. The research process. B. The research subjects.
C. The research outcomes. D. The research application.
14. Which of the following is the most favorable to child development
A. Paved surfaces. B. Open green spaces.
C. Areas with tree cover. D. Grass-covered areas.
15. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph
A. A major limitation of the study. B. A suggestion for city planers.
C A possible plan for tree planting. D. An explanation of the study findings.

When Mathew got his first pay cheque from the part-time job, he bought Melissa a beautiful dress and flowers. During the next few months, he often bought something to make his mother smile because he knew she still hadn’t recovered from the death of her lover.
As Christmas neared, Matthew’s friends began planning what to do during the holiday. Soon, they decided to go to a party, but Matthew refused to go with them. He didn’t want Melissa to feel lonely at home on Christmas. For him and Melissa, the day was special and significant, not only because it was their traditional holiday, but also because it was Melissa’s birthday.
“I’ll stay at home with my mother,” he told his friends, “We rarely get to spend time together because she’s mostly on her flights when I’m home.” But later that day, Matthew learned his mother wouldn’t be home on Christmas. “Mom Why are you working on the big day ” he asked. The airline company Melissa worked for was quite short of attendants recently because many were sick. Besides, there was sharp increase in flights due to the holiday. So Melissa decided to continue working on Christmas to support her company and help serve passengers.
Melissa said, “I’m sorry, Matthew. You’ll have to spend the holiday alone.” She felt sorry that she could not enjoy the holiday with Matthew. Matthew was also upset. As part of a Chinese and Indian literature translation program supported by both governments Vikash thought that the translation of literary works like Qinqiang would open a window for Indian people, through which they could have a better understanding of China and Chinese literature.

C. A possible plan for tree planting. D. An explanation of the study findings.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

After twenty years of marriage, Melissas lost her husband, who was a brave soldier and passed away while defending his country.
They had a son, Mathew, who was 18 years old and very considerate. In his spare time, instead of paying, he worked at a local shop so he could help his mother reduce the financial burden.
But before going to bed that night, Mathew got an idea to stay with his mother on Christmas. He would surprise her on the plane where she worked.
“I can still spend Christmas with her,” he thought. And he turned on his computer to check if the light his mother would be on still had seat left. “Yes! It still has seats!” he yelled.

【答案】 Immediately, he booked himself a ticket for Christmas. Then, with the money he had saved, he bought his mother a necklace, flowers and a birthday cake. After his mother left for the airport on Christmas day, Matthew left and secretly reached the airport. Once the boarding began and Matthew saw his mother enter the plane, he joined the queue and boarded the plane. Inside the airplane, he saw his mother standing at the upper end of the aisle, helping passengers find their seats. Instead of approaching her, Matthew walked towards his seat.
Later, while passing by Matthew’s seat, Melissa yelled, “Matthew Is that you ” When Matthew looked up to face his mother, her eyes widened in shock, and she covered her mouth with hands. “Oh! What are you doing here ” she asked. “I just wanted to spend this day with you, Mom,” Matthew hugged his mother, and handed her the gifts. With her arms around Matthew, Melissa cried, thinking how happy she was to have such a son. Seeing this, all the passengers clapped and sang “Happy Birthday” to Melissa.
