Why am I always buying new luggage I don’t know, but here I go again. It seems that I cannot keep decent luggage for some reason.
My red luggage looked so nice and strong when I bought it years ago. A trip or two with airport luggage handlers playing soccer with it and it began to break. The outside of it left plastic crumbs(碎屑) behind me like being followed by ants.
I bought a small purple suitcase for the airline specifications when I went to Egypt. It was not a bad choice. When hundreds of black suitcases all looking identical came tumbling out on the carousel at the airport, my purple one was easy to spot. So, I figured I would use the purple one again this time. But I forgot my daughter borrowed the purple suitcase and it now belongs to her.
I can never seem to keep decent luggage. About the time when I purchased a nice leather Samsonite years ago, luggage with wheels came along. My no-wheel luggage was instantly outdated.
After my leather luggage went the way of the dinosaur, I bought a new black suitcase, the largest one I could find. “This will hold everything,” I thought. And it did. But it weighed a ton. Most airlines charge $25 these days to check the luggage, and it is much too large to carry on.
This time my new suitcase is blue. Unlike the two-wheel versions, which still require a certain amount of balance and strain your back when you pull it through the airport, it is a spinner, with four wheels. You can push it, pull it, or walk beside it. And it has round wheels like a ball instead of flat wheels. It’s the latest thing, the luggage salesman assured me.
Now that I’ve spent big bucks, I’m certain they will come out with something even better, something indestructible that can do cartwheels(侧手翻)instead of merely spin. My little spinner will be obsolete before I can use it twice. Suitcase designers are busy every day dreaming up new ideas. They now have smart luggage that will produce an electronic signal. Traveling gets more complicated every day.
4. Why was the red luggage broken
A. It was badly treated by luggage handlers. B. It is of poor quality.
C. It was seriously bitten by ants. D. It is made of plastic.
5. Why did the writer buy the purple suitcase
A. It could hold many things. B. It was of the required size.
C. It was in her favourite color. D. It was a gift for her daughter.
6. What is special about the blue suitcase
A. It is unbreakable. B. It is a two-wheel version.
C. It is a nice leather suitcase with no wheels. D. It has round wheels and can move easily.
7. What is the tone of the text
A. Moving and vivid. B. Ironic and humorous.
C. Warm and imaginative. D. Humble and cautious.
A 5. B 6. D 7. B
根据第二段第二句“A trip or two with airport luggage handlers playing soccer with it and it began to break.(一两次和机场行李搬运工一起玩足球,它就开始破裂了)”可知,红色行李箱破了是因为机场行李搬运工如踢足球般粗暴地对待这个行李箱,故选A。
根据第三段第一句“I bought a small purple suitcase for the airline specifications when I went to Egypt.(我去埃及的时候,按照航空公司的规定买了一个紫色的小手提箱)”可知,作者当时买紫色行李箱是迫于机场对行李箱的规格要求,故选B。
根据倒数第二段“Unlike the two-wheel versions, which still require a certain amount of balance and strain your back when you pull it through the airport, it is a spinner, with four wheels. You can push it, pull it, or walk beside it. And it has round wheels like a ball instead of flat wheels.(两轮的版本仍然需要一定程度的平衡,当你把它拉过机场时,你的背部会绷紧,而它不同于两轮版本,它是一个有四个轮子的旋转器。你可以推它,拉它,或者走在它旁边。它有像球一样的圆形轮子,而不是扁平的轮子)”可知,这个蓝色手提箱有圆形的轮子,移动起来很方便。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第二句“A trip or two with airport luggage handlers playing soccer with it and it began to break.(一两次和机场行李搬运工一起玩足球,它就开始破裂了)”;“The outside of it left plastic crumbs(碎屑) behind me like being followed by ants.(它的外面在我身后留下了塑料屑,就像被蚂蚁跟着一样)”以及第五段“After my leather luggage went the way of the dinosaur, I bought a new black suitcase, the largest one I could find.(在我的皮箱过时之后,我买了一个新的黑色手提箱,这是我能找到的最大的一个)”中playing soccer with it、went the way of the dinosaur、can do cartwheels等语句说明了作者用幽默并略带讽刺的语言讲述了她和行李箱之间的故事,故选B。
C
“The trees are precious to us,” says Priscilla Hunter. “We believe our ancestors’ spirits are there.”
Hunter is a member of the Pomo Indians in Norther California. She’s also a founder and chairwoman of the Intertribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council (ISWC).
In 1997 the council acquired 3,844 acres of the Sinkyone wilderness, about 200 miles along California’s Lost Coast. It’s “lost” because scenic Highway 1 avoids it, cutting inland to escape the rough coastal terrain (地形). One could also say it’s lost because less than 2 percent of the original old-growth redwoods there survived logging decades ago. Now the 10 tribes that formed the union are working to protect and preserve their sacred land. David Brindley, the interim editor of National Geographic, asked Hunter how they were accomplishing that. “We’re just letting it heal. It takes a long time to heal an area that has been cut and cut,“ ”she told him, “People are saying: ‘What are you guys doing with it ’’ Letting it heal.’”
Their efforts have gained attention. Last December the Save the Redwoods League(SRL), an established nonprofit organization, gave the council 523 acres of California coastal forest. The forest, named as Tcíh-Léh-D -meaning “fish run place” in the Sinkyone language, includes nearly 200 acres of old-growth redwoods. “We were really pleased to have a place that still has some of the ancient trees. So the critters will have a place to be safe-the fish and birds and all that,” said Hunter.
The Sinkyone council is just one example of how indigenous peoples, in communities across the United States and Canada, are taking control of their land, laws, and fate.
Basing on the above, Brindley wrote this month’s cover story “We Are Here”. It explored how native nations are reclaiming their sovereignty and rebuilding their cultures.
8. What can we learn from the text
A. Hunter is in charge of the ten tribes.
B. Tcíh-Léh-D has become a heaven for wildlife.
C. The redwoods represent value and spirit.
D. The redwoods heal better with the intervention of humans.
9. Why is Califomia’s Lost Coast “lost”
A. It has given way to Highway 1.
B. It has never been reported by the press.
C. It has become unnoticed with the fading of Indian culture.
D. It has been seriously damaged for much cutting.
10. What does the underlined word “sovereignty” in the last paragraph mean
A. Rule.
B. Reform.
C. Trees.
D. Creatures.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Finding a Cover Story
B. Uniting the Two Organizations
C. Protecting the Sacred Land
D. Exploring the Loss of Lost Coast
C 9. D 10. A 11. C

根据第一段的““The trees are precious to us,” says Priscilla Hunter. “We believe our ancestors’ spirits are there.” (“这些树对我们来说很珍贵,”普里西拉·亨特说。“我们相信我们祖先的灵魂在那里。”)”及第三段第三句中的“One could also say it’s lost because less than 2 percent of the original old-growth redwoods there survived logging decades ago. (人们也可以说,它的消失是因为只有不到2%的原始红杉在几十年前的伐木中幸存下来。)”可知,那些树是红杉树,对“我们”来说很珍贵,祖先的灵魂在那里,所以红杉树代表价值和精神。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第二、三句“It’s “lost” because scenic Highway 1 avoids it, cutting inland to escape the rough coastal terrain (地形). One could also say it’s lost because less than 2 percent of the original old-growth redwoods there survived logging decades ago.

Since the days of Charles Darwin, the long necks of giraffes have been a textbook example of evolution. The theory goes that as giraffe ancestors competed for food, those with longer necks were able to reach higher leaves, getting a leg-up or neck-up over shorter animals.
But a very unusual prehistoric giraffe relative reveals that, in addition to finding food, fighting may have driven early neck evolution. In a study published Thursday in Science, a team of paleontologists described the Discokeryx(獬豸盘角鹿), a giraffe ancestor, as having a helmet-like head and large neck vertebrae(脊椎).The Discokeryx evolved like this to absorb and deliver skull-cracking collisions to seek mates and defeat competitors.
“It shows that giraffe evolution is not just lengthening the neck,” said Jin Meng,a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History and co-author of the new study.
Head-butting is an ancient and widespread form of conflict solution. Dinosaurs like Pachycephalosaurs have firm skulls(头骨), and knocking heads remain common in bighorn sheep, chameleons and even whales.
But the researchers suggested that the Discokeryx was uniquely expert at head-to-head fight. The team estimated that collisions between Discokeryxes were likely twice as forceful as head-butting muskoxen, which strike each other at nearly 25 mph.
The series of interlocking neck joints haven’t been discovered in any other vertebrate(脊椎动物),living or dead, giving the Discokeryx the greatest head-bashing equipment yet discovered, according to the researchers. “This animal is an extreme example of using head-butting as a fighting tool,” Meng said.
12. What do we know about the Discokeryx
A. Its evolution helps make and bear crashes.
B. It has tiny neck vertebrae.
C. Its thin neck can stretch to find mates.
D. It has a horn-like head.
13. What does the research find
A. Whales move at the speed of 25 mph.
B. Muskoxen are good at giving a side attack.
C. Many vertebrates have amazing neck joints.
D. Discokeryxes hit opponents with big power.
14. What is the text mainly about
A. How Jin Meng completed a research paper.
B. Why giraffes’ necks evolve so long.
C. How the impact force between Discokeryxes is measured.
D. Why giraffes’ development goes against Charles Darwin’s theory.
15. Where can the text be found
A. In a:history book.
B. In a story collection.
C. In a science magazine.
D. In a celebrity biography.
A 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据文章第五段“But the researchers suggested that the Discokeryx was uniquely expert at head-to-head fight. The team estimated that collisions between Discokeryxes were likely twice as forceful as head-butting muskoxen, which strike each other at nearly 25 mph.(但研究人员认为,獬豸盘角鹿在肉搏战方面是独一无二的专家。研究小组估计,石龙之间的碰撞可能是头撞麝牛的两倍,麝牛之间的碰撞速度接近每小时25英里)”可推知,獬豸盘角鹿用强大的力量打击对手。故选D项。
3.主旨大意题。根据文章第二段“But a very unusual prehistoric giraffe relative reveals that, in addition to finding food, fighting may have driven early neck evolution.(但一种非常不寻常的史前长颈鹿亲戚揭示了,除了寻找食物外,战斗可能还推动了早期颈部的进化)”及全文内容可知,本文探讨了长颈鹿进化长出脖子的原因。故选B项。

I was always the little girl who played with magnets on the kitchen floor. I pieced together model roller coasters and exhausted a lot of science kits. Learning from my dad as he designed robots, I formed my own ideas, including an automatic breakfast machine. At 14 years old, I applied to my high school’s Academy of Science, Engineering, and High Technology. As is unfortunately typical in engineering, female students were critically underrepresented in this academy-there were a mere twenty of us out of ninety total students. This was a tough challenge for me: as an ambitious female engineer, I needed to advocate my own talents and abilities in a field where women are often marginalized(边缘化).
Within the first month of the freshman year, we began our first project: a wooden can-crusher(压罐器).I had worked on projects with boys before, but those were nothing like this. The three of us had one month to research, design, build, and test our device-a month full of arguing and frustration. My suggestions were turned down. And I was assigned the “default(默认的)female role” of timekeeper and documentation. I wasn’t expected to be capable of contributing to anything else. We finished with a functional can-crusher, but I knew this was not how I wanted to continue as a female engineer.
By the time junior year rolled around, it was time to face the year-long Engineering Design and Development (EDD) project and state competition. When I agreed to work with two other girls, I had no idea that this would entirely change my perspective of my ability as a team member, a leader and an engineer. For this competition, we created a garage parking aidto help drivers prevent side-view mirror damage. Within our team, we created a safe space where we all valued each other’s input and carried equal responsibilities. After countless experiments and sleepless nights, we were awarded third place at EDD State, which helped me find the confidence I didn’t have before.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then came the final year-long project for me, an academy senior.

Thanks to all these experiences, I’ve grown a lot.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then came the final year-long project for me, an academy senior. I created a team of people whom I respected and who respected me in return. As a group of two guys and two girls, we all brainstormed, calculated, designed and constructed together. I remember the numerous times when we washed oil and metal remains off our hands together after the laborious work. I also remember we once got stuck with several technical problems, however, we spared no effort to tackle them. After what seemed like centuries, a two-passenger, gasoline-powered go-kart was completed. The other day, when we tested it out at the top speed of 27 mph, we felt excited. At that moment, I felt proud of my team. I felt proud I bravely soldiered on my dreams.
Thanks to all these experiences, I’ve grown a lot. I think I have gained the courage to stand up for myself and the abilities as a leader and a strong team member. In the process of growth, I learn to be patient. I understand the meaning of confidence and cooperation. I want to thank my dad for cultivating my interest in engineering. I know I will encounter many thistles and thorns in the future life, but I don’t fear. I have been determined to succeed as a biomedical engineer, designing and innovating medical equipment to improve healthcare and human life.

A Moving and vivid. B. Ironic and humorous.
C. Warm and imaginative. D. Humble and cautious.

D. Why giraffes’ development goes against Charles Darwin’s theory.
15. Where can the text be found
A. In a:history book.
B. In a story collection.
C. In a science magazine.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then came the final year-long project for me, an academy senior.
