“We probably spent seven or eight months looking for Thor,” Grace said. “What made it worse was that there were rumors(谣言) going around that there was dogfighting in our area. We still always hoped that somebody had taken him to be a pet, but you just never knew.”
“It was terrible. My daughter Bronwyn would try to find Thor everywhere, which had been a Christmas present for her. Even while watching TV programmes, she would say, ‘Oh, look! That dog looks like Thor!’”Grace said. Then the family moved, and the hope became impossible.

But the man was forced to turn him over to the shelter when he couldn't keep Thor in his rented home. Luckily, the ring on Thor's neck gave people some information.
Thor was flown to Nova Scotia last week. The family picked him up at the airport. “Thor was just lying in his box and looking down, and my daughter walked over and said, ‘Hey Thor.’ He immediately stood up, trying to greet my daughter. One Moore Elementary schoolteacher is showing students the importance of communication through “shout-outs”. Third Grade Moore Elementary Teacher Lindsey Winders said a shout-out is a compliment(称赞) that students can say or write down. “Like, ‘hey I noticed you doing a really great job solving your math problems yesterday. I wanted to make sure you know that I saw you do that,’” Winders said.
Winders said she makes sure she is giving shout-outs to her students every day. “I might write them a sticky note, or write them a quick little note in their planner. I might just say it to them on their way into the classroom or on their way out of the classroom, but most importantly I try to do it every day,” Winders said.
In addition to the compliments, Winders has the students greet each other every morning during morning meeting. She will have students give examples to the class of how to communicate in different settings(场景) .Third grade student Nayelli Moranchel said she had given at least six shout-outs this year. “It makes me happy, because they always write something back,” Moranchel said.
Recently, Winders took it one step further and wrote a personalised note on each of her students' desk. “In our classroom, sometimes it can be challenging for me to give a compliment or a shout-out to each and every one of them in a way that feels equal(平等的) and valuable at the same time. So I decide that there is no better way than leaving a note on their desk that can stay for as long as they want it to,” Winders said.
Winders said it is encouraging when she sees her students copy the act, and give each other compliments without her guidance(指导) .

Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush(灌木丛) in the Amazon may have more kinds of ants than the whole of Britain! About 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.
Rainforests are the lungs of the Earth—storing large quantities of carbon dioxide(CO2) and producing a huge amount of the world's oxygen(氧气) .Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(树冠层) of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, dry heat from the sun and strong winds.
Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly across the gaps(缝隙) .The ground floor of the forest is not all leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually quite clear. It is where dead leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life.
They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rain forests can create 75% of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal—and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain—your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won’t keep you dry if there is a full rain storm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity(湿气) of large rainforests helps the formation of rain clouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain.
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Rainforests produce oxygen. B. Rainforests cover a large area.
C. Rainforests are well managed. D. Rainforests are rich in wildlife.
33. Which of the following helps most with the survival of rainforests
A. Heavy rains. B. Big trees. C. Small plants. D. Forest animals.
34. Why do the leaves and branches of different trees avoid touching each other
A. For more sunlight. B. For more growing space.
C. For self-protection. D. For feeding the insects.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Life-giving Rainforests B. The Law of Nature
C. Animals in the Amazon D. Weather in Rainforests

Christmas was coming. Six-year-old David was thinking what present she could get from Santa He wanted slippers; he wanted a silk tie;he wanted some toys. And school starting soon, he also hoped to get something about schooling. In order to get Santa to know what he needed, he thought he would write a letter to Santa, which he believed would bring him those presents. He found a piece of paper and made a list of the items(物品) on it, and then bent down to post the letter up the chimney, waiting for the winds to take it up.
David got up very early on the Christmas morning. He searched his room carefully, but to his disappointment, he didn't find the present she hoped for. Hadn't Santa received the letter Was he too busy to send him the gifts Although feeling a little unhappy, David believed that Santa would not forget him and that he was sure to receive the items.
Many years had passed and 2022came.In an old house, a young builder, Lewis Shaw was removing the fireplace with his colleagues when he suddenly found a small piece of paper, which was still in perfect condition even if it had turned yellow. He picked it up and opened it. It was a letter written to Santa. The touching hand-written note read:
Dear Father Christmas,
Please can you send me a drum, box of chalks, slippers, silk tie, pencil box, Rupert Annual (my favorite magazine), any little toys you have to spare(留出)
Love,
David
It was then signed off with lots of kisses.
This was the very letter written by David and the house was where he had lived during his childhood! The letter impressed Shaw so much. How simple Christmas once was! David didn't ask for much, just the things he needed. Nowadays kids always wanted expensive gifts and took it for granted (认为理所当然).

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Shaw decided to find out the writer of the letter.

Dear Alex,
I quite understand how you feel. Take it easy, my dear friend. It is common for us to go through a similar hard time when we come to a new environment. I hope the following advice can help you. To begin with, I recommend you to take part in some school activities. With making some new friends, you will feel less lonely. What's more, you'd better have a talk with your teacher when in trouble as teachers always have their own ways to find solutions to students' problems. I truly hope you can get used to your new school life as soon as possible.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
Shaw decided to find out the writer of the letter. He shared a photo of the note on the internet. He also spoke to the neighbors on both sides of the house. Within two days he got in touch with David, the now 80-year-oldman living in a town nearby. They met at the old house, and Shaw returned him the letter there. What a great surprise it was that David could read the letter again so many years after he wrote it!
A great surprise was on the way. After a pleasant chat, Shaw handed David a box. Inside it were all the presents David had listed in the letter. In fact, it had taken Shaw much time to collect these presents, some of which looked like the same style as those in David's childhood. He didn't even know Rupert Annual was a magazine for children before he was able to get one. And David was quite excited—he finally had his Christmas wishes fulfilled!
