It’s a classic story: A kid is forced to learn an instrument from a young age, they play it throughout their childhood, and they develop a bittersweet relationship with it. Is the constant battle between the love for the music and the hate for the constant challenge worth the fight For me, it was.
I started playing the piano when I was four-that was 15 years ago! This was huge commitment, so there must have been something worth holding on to, right
The easy guess is that I was purely in love with music and piano. Although that’s the sweeter tale, it’s a bit more complicated. I struggled a lot with piano. Family and peers were, at least in my own head, constantly placed beside me in competition. I felt pressure to be the best in order to prove something to others-and more devastatingly (破坏性地) to prove something to myself. The seed of my musical interest was grown in the sunlight of competition and doubt. Hate sprouted (滋生) when my self-criticism hit too hard.
It’s difficult to learn to love something that didn’t originate from love. For a while, piano was more of an annoyance than a hobby. But somehow, love grew. It was deeply buried. But it was there, and by high school,it was strong enough that when I was truly on the verge of quitting any kind of formal training. I found the strength to hold on tighter, and dig further. I switched teachers, and got incredibly lucky with one who helped me tunnel into what I loved. I learned pieces for myself, I composed for myself, and I found confidence not because I got “good enough,” but because I learned that anything I had was good enough.
The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something, remember that with commitment, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.
4. What does the author want to show by telling a classic story
A. The benefits of music.
B. Kids’ struggle in learning instruments.
C. Kids’ bittersweet childhood.
D The popularity of learning instruments.
5. What can we know about the author’s experience of playing the piano
A. She finally quit formal training.
B. She never treated it as her hobby.
C. She was in pure love with music and piano.
D. She once experienced great pressure from herself.
6. What helped the author find confidence
A. Her attitude. B. Her training.
C. Her compromise. D. Her achievement.
7. What message is mainly delivered in the passage
A. Practice makes perfect.
B Love is a thing that grows.
C. Content is better than riches.
D. Chance favors the prepared mind.

When Katie Stagliano grew a 40-pound cabbage, she didn’t know that she was beginning to develop a dream as well. When the 10-year-old girl from Summerville, South Carolina realized how much cabbage was in her garden, she decided to donate it to needy families by working with Fields to Families, a nonprofit organization based in South Carolina that gives the hungry access to nutritious fruits and vegetables.
Katie’s cabbage fed nearly 300 people and inspired her to learn more about childhood hunger in the United States. On discovering that more than 12 million kids in the United States go to bed hungry each night, Katie decided to take action.
Her first task was to work together with her family to expand their own garden so that they could donate more vegetables to needy families. But beyond her own backyard, she wanted to teach other children how to get involved. To grow her idea, she started the planting of a garden at her school, which also donates its fresh produce to local food agencies. Through a generous donation from Fields to Families, Katie’s school is receiving seeds and volunteer help, and Katie will get the chance to work there with a master gardener as her teacher!
Katie also designed her very own “No Hungry Children” T-shirt, which is available for purchase online. A part of the proceeds from her T-shirt sales economically supports Katie’s efforts, as well as the work of Amazing Kids, a nonprofit organization that focuses on the dreams of kids like Katie.
“I think it is important to have something to strive for,” says Katie. “By planting a garden or just some seeds in a pot you can make a difference. My cabbage alone fed 275 people. If more kids did the same, we all could be helping to make a long-time dream of no hungry people possible.”

Now researchers have found that humans produce a different odor (气味) when under pressure — and dogs can sniff it out. While previous studies have suggested dogs might notice human emotions, possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell.
Wilson, head of one research team, pointed the findings could prove useful when training service dogs, such as those that support people with PTSD (创伤后应激障碍). “They’re often trained to look at someone either crouching down on the floor, crying out in fear, or starting to do self-injurious behaviors,” said Wilson. The latest study, she said, offers another potential clue.
Wilson and colleagues trained four dogs to identify the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the containers included unused gauze (纱布), samples from another person, or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day. After the team is confident that the dogs understood the approach, they turned to collect breath and sweat samples collected from 36 people asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17, and the participants reported feeling stressed.
Later, the dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task. The researchers then tested whether the dogs could do the same with samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials.
The results reveal that the dogs chose the “stressed” sample in 675 out of the 720 trials. It was pretty amazing to see how smoothly the dogs act in telling people these two samples definitely different.
12. Why did Wilson and colleagues do such an experiment
A. To train service dogs for people with PTSD. B. To confirm dogs can smell out stressed people.
C. To prove dogs could recognize human emotions. D. To help people understand how stressed they are.
13. The service dogs will usually provide help when someone ________.
A. hurts himself B. lies on the bed C. produces an odor D. screams in excitement
14. Which order does the experiment follow
a. To train dogs to pick out the particular container.
b. To show each set of samples to a single dog in 20 trials.
c. To collect samples from participants when they are stressed out.
d. To ask participants to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17.
A. a-d-c-b B. a-c-d-b C. c-a-d-b D. c-a-b-d
15 What’s the author’s attitude towards the finding
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Uncertain. D. Neutral.

I wanted to lend a hand, but she told me she could handle it herself. She promised to help me review for the physics exam , and guess what she did. She ignored all my calls and texts!” said Jane angrily. “Are you listening to me ” Mr. Richard was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Richard as he started to collect the exam papers.
Jane wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Jane’s favorite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. She didn’t know what to do about Terry. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all the time.” thought Jane.
For a while piano was more of an annoyance than a hobby.

A. a-d-c-b B. a-c-d-b C. c-a-d-b D. c-a-b-d
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the finding
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Uncertain. D. Neutral.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. B

【导语】本文是篇说明文。研究者们已经发现人类在压力下会一种不同的气味,而狗可以嗅出这种气味。为此,Wilson和他的同事们一起进行了实验,并最终证实了这一发现。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“While previous studies have suggested dogs might notice human emotions, possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell.”(虽然之前的研究表明,狗可能通过嗅觉察觉到人类的情绪,但它们是否能察觉到压力,以及是否能通过嗅觉察觉到压力,仍存在疑问。)及后面开始的实验可以推断,Wilson和同事们做实验是为了证明狗能够嗅出有压力的人。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Wilson, head of one research team, pointed the findings could prove useful when training service dogs, such as those that support people with PTSD (创伤后应激障碍).”(Wilson是一个研究小组的负责人,他指出,这一发现在训练服务犬时很有用,比如那些支持PTSD患者的服务犬。)和“They’re often trained to look at someone either crouching down on the floor, crying out in fear, or starting to do self-injurious behaviors”(它们通常被训练成看着那些蹲在地板上、害怕地大喊大叫或开始做自残行为的人)可知,服务犬通常会在人们有伤害自己或是自残行为时提供帮助。故选A。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Wilson and colleagues trained four dogs to identify the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample,”(Wilson和他的同事们训练了四只狗来识别装着特定呼吸和汗水样本的容器)可知,这是实验的第一步a;根据第三段“they turned to collect breath and sweat samples collected from 36 people asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17, and the participants reported feeling stressed.”(他们收集了36人的呼吸和汗水样本,这些样本被要求以17为单位从9000开始倒数,参与者表示感到有压力。) 故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“It was pretty amazing to see how smoothly the dogs act in telling people these two samples definitely different.”(看到狗狗们如此流畅地告诉人们这两个样本绝对不同是非常令人惊叹的。)及其中的“amazing”可知,作者认为实验的结果是肯定的、令人惊叹的。故选B。

【答案】 Our Earth, Our Responsibility
April 22 nd was named as Earth Day in 1970 and it is celebrated every year. It is a day to raise people’s awareness of protecting the earth, which is vital to human beings.
Covering about 71% of the earth's surface, the oceans on earth play a crucial role in regulating the climate, while 29% of the land gives food and everything people and animals need. In addition, the earth gives birth to tens of thousands of species from the very beginning and is home to a large variety of life. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect it for our future generations. As students, we can take part in it by doing small things, such as collecting garbage whenever we see or avoiding pouring waste water into the oceans. Besides, we can call on people around us to take action. By working together, we can protect and restore our precious earth.
Every little effort counts. As long as we try our best, we will make a difference to the earth.
